NEW COBRA DRIVERS?

Recommended Posts

So I was able to hit the Speed Zone today and absolutely killed the driver and was digging it until one thing “caught” my eye...

There is a “lip” where the “cup” is welded on the bottom of the driver. You think to yourself “no big deal” right, wrong...if you like to drag your club head to start your back swing. Myself and many of my friends do it to get the club going back on the right plane and today two of us tried it and it got caught on the grass. Kind of like when your iron gets stuck on a tuff of grass but not as bad. I showed it to my club pro and he dragged it back on the carpet and you could hear it. He was like “damn” this could be a issue...

Thoughts anyone... anyone else with this problem or notice it?

I played nine holes with my extreme today set on 10 1/2 draw, what I’ve noticed and I’m going to test it again tomorrow on the range if it’s not raining, I lowered it to minus one draw. Watching a few reviews before I even played with it I was getting the same thing that the guys that were hitting it, it likes to avoid their left side of the fairway, now for me that’s not bad because that’s my miss and I actually hit every fairway today but everything was a slight fade. Now I did order it in the tour spec shaft which is an inch shorter and it might be just that I am playing the ball too far up in my stance, just like I do my G 410, which is an inch longer but I was getting a pretty good High launch and I was getting pretty good distance 42° out I was able to like I said it all the fairways, and the Threewood definitely a fairway finder. I thought when I first hit the club inside it was very loud but once I got on the golf course it was not loud at all matter fact it was like a muffled smack which I really like so it was only the first nine holes so we’ll see I did not notice the grass thing I’ll take a look at the bottom of my club.

ZX40TCD3BA9C.jpegWell I just tested this and I just played nine holes too, and I had no grass on the edge at all and I can see by looking very closely at mine that if you turn the club face down and drag it back you will scrape with that edge, but if you set the club down flat and take it back, that portion where I typed that sits above that lip and if the club sitting down on its own, or you take it back I could not catch my carpet but if I turn the club face down I could. I usually hover my club I don’t like to set it down on the ground anyways because that just creates tension for me.

I get what people are saying about the lip but can't really understand how it would be that big of a deal. Most of the courses I play don't have perfectly flat or manicured tee boxes so if I was dragging the club along the ground during takeaway then I'd hit weird bumps and grass patches no matter what driver I was using. This would bother me more than a tiny lip around the face.

I was just talking to my club fitter at Continental golf just now telling him about that and I said well push comes to shove get out the Dremel or put a piece of lead tape on the bottom to cover that gap, like I said mine I played all day I hover the club but as I said on my kitchen floor I turned the club face towards the floor and pulled it back yeah it’s scraped up linoleum!

Unfortunately no. This is one thing I hate about Cobra, they change the shape of the weight every year.

So yesterday I played with it, today I took it to the range for about two hours to get the Threewood and the driver set up and what really surprise me was when I set it to minus one draw which is 9 1/2° and took the 14 g weight out of the back of my extreme I was lacing it down the middle, when I put it back in I just could not get it to come back to the Left for me. And from watching some of the guys test it on YouTube a lot of them hit that to the right or straight it just is not for some reason like to come back to the left much unless you really flatten your swing out, but I mean bring her back on a flatter plane than my normal upright swing. So what I think I’m going to do is I’m gonna put either the lightest weight I can find or just put the screw in there to cover the hole because I really like the way it performs and I may take the 14g and replace the 16 that’s in my Threewood that things a beast. As far as that edge on the bottom it’s just the way I take the club back I saw no grass at all on the bottom of my club, and just a side note I was talking to my guy Continental Golf and he was on the phone with Cobra at the same time so I told him just to mention that to them and see what they have to say. Anybody who is on the fence wanting to get one of these because I don’t know if anybody has the Tensei AV 55 R In their fitting cart but that is the shaft if you order two or length 44 1/2 inches it is just as playable as the orange 65 stiff and again I have a 95 mile an hour swing speed so I went with the 65 are in that same shaft for my fairway wood 42 inches and I really like the way it performs

Same thing happened to me. Wrong head, 1/2" short. Funny because the rep even made a comment about him loving the white/matte combo but sent the yellow head. Oops!

That Hilarious and pretty cool I like the name LOL.

Yeah RealNick, you’ll love it I’ve had cobra drivers before I love the sound of them and their shape and they always been very reliable as a fairway finder I did not get this thinking it was going be the longest club in the world I got it because I wanted to start maybe getting in the fairway a little better but because I don’t have a bunch of different clubs in my bag I do have room for a second driver and I have my ping 410 and that’s very straight and very long but I think I may just end up just bagging the cobra driver. Also I hit the Maverick 4 Hybrid today and that thing was carrying like 220 with not even a real decent hit that combined with the Cobra and the maverick irons I have coming I hope I have a good bag

You are correct and I think I indicated if you look back that there’s several guys like Mark Crossfield and there’s others that seem to really have a hard time getting the ball to come back to the left, now I can tell you today I was able to do it but I had to take the weight totally out of the back so taking out 14 g removed I’m going to put a 2 g in there tomorrow but when I removed it at least I was hitting it totally straight and not so much right but I was hitting the center of the club face and I tried to even hit a toe shot and yeah it does not want to go to far left so if you want to club that’s going to eliminate the left side of the fairway this might be the driver for you LOL

I went to range again, I really had to manipulate my stance and club to get come left, lightened up by removing weight but no luck, G410, no issues, talk to my fitter I’m just going stick with G410 and trade both driver and FW in and get a maverick 4 W to go with irons and Mav hybrid, I’ve never had to put that much effort into straightening the T-shot out.

Like I was saying above if I didn’t hear someone else asking the same question that I was wondering why it would not draw I mean I even hit my 410 driver of the inside corner of the ball off the toe and it drew back to the center of very slight bit I did the same thing with the Cobra and it goes either right or far right. I set up the whole like it was 12 o’clock on a face clock of a watch and I had my shoulders hips feet all aligned to like 2 o’clock and I even played the ball further up and even turn the club face towards the target and if it in and go straight it’s still fell off to the right once I got home I didn’t realize how physically I was worn out I never have to work that hard to try to make the ball go either straight or get like some kind a low hook so like I said I’m gonna have to give it back I know I’m gonna take a loss but there’s no sense in hanging onto it

Just hit both at my local shop. The Extreme SZ is the most forgiving driver I’ve ever hit, hands down. Gave up 1-2 mph of ball speed vs. my current Epic Flash on center strikes, but the Speed Zone was unreal on mishits. Slightly off center strikes gave up basically nothing, and balls dead off the toe lost maybe 3-4mph. It was a touch spinny (averaged 3050 with the Smoke Yellow), but assuming that can be better dialed in with a fitting, this is going in the bag for me this year.

So it's not just me. When I ordered my irons, they came 1/4" short and they sent the wrong 3 iron from a totally different line. My 3 wood came with the wrong head and was also 1/4" short. Love Cobra clubs, but their club building and attention to order detail is terrible. How hard is it to cut clubs the right length and put the right head on the end?

Hit the SZ today again.

not warmed up with the rogue 6S, which is Not my shaft...

15 shots on a really bad ball Striking Day (Not warmed up).

results still impressiv, i actually Hit the middle of the Face 1 Time and carried it avg 250 yds in the air

i also missed 5mph avg Swing Speed (so Rusty)

Even that Standard SZ head is so forgiving, this should be a massive Upgrade over my XR16pro
