PXG Gen 3... Jan 2020 (ST, Gen 3 T and P Photos added Page 13)

It is interesting about how pxg is designing their closed cavity Gen 3 irons.

I would compare the use of the dual core material to the same idea that is used in golf balls.

In the ball, most have a central core that is soft but explosive and has high resitution properties. That core is surrounded by multiple layers of various materials that react upon compression differently depending upon the amount of compression. Some react with high compression like a driver more so than an iron....some are very resilent with light compression like an iron but not as good with driver like compression. Of course much of the layers are for spin control as well as compression.

Enter pxg and their dual material closed cavity design. The soft interior is highly resilent and transfers energy from the ball strike back into the ball while the outer layer is more for support of the face and containment the the inner core.

Wonder what the future holds for this design? Like different golf balls, will the strong impact of the less oblique long and mid irons bring future cavities that have different materials compare to short irons where feel and not distance is more important?

Should we expect cavities with multiple materials designed for different types of irons? What about woods?

The closed cavity iron is here to stay and will become the future for iron design as it offers more design capabilities....oh..imho...lol.

Maybe we should expect designer irons...want the feel of a blade...thats an option...select your choice. Or maybe a softer sponge-bob-head feel.

Options available depending upon your desire...and yours are injected upon build with your choice.

Sorry..but way too much time sitting here thinking while locked-down....ugh.

my rep sent me a few other similar composite shafts (Accra, KBS TGI, etc). My original PXG irons have the i95 SF shafts. While I liked the demos, the SF’s still are the winners for me.

I did try the T and definitely knew the P’s were a better fit. The Gen3 P top line is noticeably thinner that my original PXG’s. 80% of the swings with the T’s were fine. The other 20% had greater dispersion than the vast majority of the shots hit with the P head.

very happy with my decision.

I had my Gap wedge in the Gen3 0311T bent to 50 and then have a PXG Forged 54 and Milled 58I am shallow AoA and at my fitting I was more consistent with the T's than the P's due to the thinner sole. I had the T's bent strong to be closer to the P's loft.

You are 100% correct. Chinese manufacturing has gotten really good at poaching tech, there's no denying that. We experience that as well in my line of work but there are certain instances where making things in China is better than making them domestically, not from a cost perspective, but from a capabilities perspective, but your statement is one I've experienced before, personally.

For those who have or have seen the 0311T Gen 3 heads, how do the compare in size to the previous generations of 0311T’s? I’ve seen several comments regarding how “small” the head size is in the Gen 3 0311T...

This is exactly what I'd like to know as well. Thanks to all that have posted comparison pics so far, every little bit helps. I know I can play a small head, I just don't prefer it.

So far, I've read that compared to PING they are smaller than iBlade and barely bigger than Blueprint and really close to S55. For Miura, they are smaller than CB 1008 and slightly bigger than Baby Blade. For New Level, they are slightly smaller than the 902. In the Golfwrx video interview with the PXG team, they said they specifically made the T smaller for Gen 3.

Gang, I have a set of Gen 3 XP and I wanna replace the 5 iron with either a Gen2 X or SGI. Does anyone have any experience with either? I'm aware of the physical differences in sole width and offset but I'm curious if anyone has any launch, spin, land angle experience. PXG has given me "both" as two different associates replayed to my inquiry.

Head size in the G3 T is fairly small in comparison to the P and XP..........

PXG 0311 T GEN3 Irons Review - Plugged In Golf"At address, the 0311 T looks nearly identical to the ST. The top line of the GEN3 has been beveled even more aggressively than the Gen2, so it looks very thin. There’s very little offset, and the blade length is compact without being intimidating."

"While PXG does continue to push the boundaries on price, they’re also pushing the boundaries on performance.  There is not a single iron that I’ve tested – and I’ve hit them all – that performs quite like the PXG 0311 T GEN3."

Has anyone had a chance to compare the P to the XP? I would not typically consider something like the XP, but it doesn't look to be much bigger and the difference in offset doesn't seem to be all that much from what I can see. Just thinking that if it's that much longer and quite a bit more forgiving, maybe the small difference in size isn't a deal breaker. Curious to see what you say.

dhen9- just curious, why do you want to replace the XP 5i with a Gen 2 club? I just purchased XP 6i-GW and am trying to decide what to do for the next club: 5i, 5 hybrid or possibly 9W. I like the XPs a lot but also don’t do well with hybrids. Not being able to hit any clubs anywhere complicates the matter.

tomg1969- I did a fitting prior to the lockdown, and the XPs were longer and more consistent for me compared to the Ps. The XPs were no bigger or more offset than my ping G410s. I’ll attempt to attach a pic of XP vs G410s, although I don’t have a comparison of Gen 3 P vs XP.

Helpful tip: never alter the delivery address for a PXG order before speaking with PXG first. Its my fault and, it may seem obvious to some, but I didn't realize I needed PXG's authorization to change the delivery location of my order. I was supossed to have my irons last Monday, but it looks like I won't have them until this Tuesday.

Anyway, with the current deal, I'm strongly considering purchasing a Gen 2 SGI, as opposed to the 0311 X, since its still $400.

Has anyone gone this route or have any input on whether or not this seems like a viable alternative to a true "driving iron"?
