GolfWRX in general

Recommended Posts

It's just not as welcoming as it used to be. As a 43-year-old, I just broke 90 for the first time (well, including a couple of gimmes inside 6' and excluding those 3 I chunked into the water on 17) and I feel that, with a little more practice on my short game, I have a legitimate shot at making it on the TOUR next year. A year or two ago, I'd have started a thread asking for some advice, but I feel I'd just get laughed off the site on the current iteration of GolfWRX.

I mean, what gives?

For me there just seems to be a lot more meanness than there used to be. Maybe it's just my imagination but I just don't have the will to put up with that crap on a forum about a game I love. It sucks the fun out of it.

Maybe we need a bogey golf section of the forums. For those of us with less than tour quality games.

Right now, this forum is way behind where it used to be in my opinion......In the past, there always seemed to be at least two threads that I was glued to....They would last for weeks. Now the conversation seems a little bland. I would imagine things will pick up.....When the site started it's transformation, we lost a lot of participation from a lot of members.

It's not only this one. A number of forums I follow around the world and in several languages have became very hostile places. G.WRX still seems a fairly civilised place in comparison to many. This could have to do with the apolitical nature of this forum which keeps the paid trolls away.

We are not supposed to get into politics but all over the world there is a lot of frustration and anger with the way life is going and I guess the forums have became the avenue to release some of the stress. It's much easier on a forum than in a real world because you don't see the actual person, just a piece of text, so the rules that govern our interactions with other people don't apply that strongly. A bit like road rage, it's a lot easier to scream at a metal box rather than at the human being. Unfortunately, my crystal ball is very murky at what will come of this and how it will end.

I think it is a function of a couple of things: 1.) the forum has become very huge (member # wise) and 2.) most of the stalwarts have aged 10+ years and no longer have the desire to spar with the idiots. We're too busy telling someone about our hemorrhoids or our bad knee. I still enjoy it, but I do miss some of the witty repartee that was prevalent a few years ago.

I mainly just read the forums but the new site rollout and troll posters have definitely led me to come to the site less. In particular the communication (or lack thereof) during the rollout really turned me off. I can understand the site ownership is bit of thankless job but the tone of messaging was very poor in my opinion. I can only assume many of the long time members who have left/stopped posting felt the same.

Or, how about that guy who posted about nutrition and eating during a round? His post was two solid paragraphs about bringing all sorts of food to play 18 holes. He started with how he drank 180 ounces of water the night before and explained the importance of carrying lean meats and nuts for protein and went on to speak of breaking his energy bar into 6 pieces (one piece every 3 holes) so he could keep his blood sugar stable throughout the round. It helped his mental game too.

That was great.

I agree that the change is not limited to this site. The internet is maturinggrowing older, and the way people post on message boards has changed with that.

That said, I think perspective is important. I'd assert that some (many?) of those "classic" threads of days gone by were started by trolls, or fed by trolls, but the way people responded was different. Hack, may be we were less jaded then.

I still think GolfWRX has some good content, and some good posts and posters, but there's a bit more chaff* now.

I don't think GolfWRX is alone in that respect, though.

*And I'm certainly not wholly innocent in that regard...

The forum has some solid advice and information, however sometimes the seriousness of some of the posters and the incessant need to gang up on or call out posters becomes too much. People should just relax and have more fun with posts that are not that serious. I know a few who post less because of fear of being ganged up on.

haha. Those always seem to get things going. There will probably be a topic soon as the USGA should be releasing their distance report any time. It will be fun because last year, early reports are showing a decrease in distance...

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that G.WRX has lots of great content. I am not disputing that. After a few years of not playing or following golf much this is the (only) site I get back to. Part is to get information and to participate in discussions, but part is to read about how the very accomplished players view the game. Most golfers I know are about bogey golfers so a perspective from those who actually know how to play the game is most interesting.

I've been just wondering about the role of the Internet recently a lot. There's supposed to be a number of complex societal topics that would require a broad based civic debate to be properly addressed. Where exactly, and how, would we have that debate?

Personally, I'm a big fan of good trolling which really is an art in subtlety. But more about that later, it's the first Tuesday of the month which means it's time to start getting ready for the black tee challenge (aka Tombstone Challenge) at The Dunes Golf Links. True golf is stroke play from the tips.
