3Hybrid or 7Wood?

Tks tbcc.

Without intending to re-route this thread, I'm expecting the bigger head negatively affected its performance out of the rough, esp. v a hybrid.

Always pros and cons

4 hybrid (23) for me is much more versatile than a 7 wood or 3 hybrid. I can hit any shape with it and any yardage from 190-225. 5 wood is the next longest club and fits the next yardage gap.

Some guys are obviously great with 7 woods, but they are one dimensional in my hands. They just go straight up, and I play where it’s always windy. I’d need to play a 7 wood at about 40” to have any chance of not hitting moon balls.

I own both.

I carry the 7w, but actually prefer the 3 hybrid. My issue is, I need the 7 wood for a short layup 90° dogleg par 4, where I have to carry the trees, and then stop the ball short of running through the fairway. The 3 hybrid trajectory is a little too flat, and the 7w pulls it off every time. So, 7w made it into my prestigious bag.

I prefer my 7w over my hybrid. I like the higher descent angle since I primarily use this club to attack par 5s in two.

Enjoy the added height out of rough too since it’s spinning less. Still able to work the ball so not losing much versatility but do feel hybrids are more workable.

I do notice people generally having trouble hitting fairway woods. I guess they are trying to swing it like a driver.

7 wood all the way. Easy to hit off fairways or out of the rough. Also great off the T on those short skinny par 4s that you need to hit the fairway. Also for me the 7 wood if I hit it with a slight cut lands very softly so also good on those long par 3s. I go from 5 iron to the 7 wood, my 5 iron is my 200-210 club and my 7 wood is my 215-230 depending on shot shape.

Congrats, gotta love happy accidents like yours.

I don't have any fairway woods in my bag, top end is driver and hybrids. I did hit a 7 wood once and it felt good, but it was slightly out of my price range and it seemed to go the same distance as my 3 hybrid. I didn't really pay attention to ball flight though.

I am one of those people, I struggle with fairway woods, hit hybrids much better. Perhaps I am trying to swing fairway woods like a driver.

I can help answer all these questions with ease.

If you hook than just about any hybrid will show that evil side of her. Especially under pressure. A 7w always llways launches the highest of the two. But every 7w I have seen is shut face.IMO neither of these are good for a hook player. They will both eventually go south on your match. Long iron or Crossover allow you to set up normally (or close too) and keep that face from shutting down much easier. If you slice stick with hybrids or high lofted woods. They will work perfect for you. Also figure out your distance gaps. Otherwise this is all useless.

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

Golf is what you make of it.  Play grateful and accepting. We are all lucky to have it.

Rather than expecting lets all try and appreciate instead.

I tried my buddies Heavenwood and face was still too closed for me. Not as bad as other ut man I hook anything with a closed face. Bad.

In the past, I purchased a 7 wood to match my set (3-5-7) and then also purchased a hybrid of equal loft to the 7 wood. After playing them, the 7 wood launched higher and went shorter than the hybrid. Currently my set does not contain a 7 wood.

The wind has been pretty rough lately(March winds,) and on one hole I hit a 7 wood that was redirected by the wind and then stopped mid air and dropped. My buddy topped his and it went further. I was not happy about that at all. I would have been better with the 5 hybrid on that hole.

Bag is in overhaul mode

Maybe try practicing lower "knockdown shots" and/or low hooded draw 7w putting it a bit further back in your stance? I don't know the hole of course, but if winds were that strong, if I didn't do that I might anyway have used a "punched" low 5 wood that I sse you have in the bag. For what it's worth.

To me it's about the actual loft and not the club number. I carry the Taylor Made M4 10.5 driver, M4 16.5 HL 3-Wood, and M4 21 HL 5-wood. I also have the M4 3 hybrid 19 and M4 4 hybrid 22. I find the 3 wood and 5 wood give me more options during my round than the hybrids. They also give best spacing as my bag starts with 4 iron. As others have stated every now and then the big hook shows up with the hybrids but virtually never with the fairways.

Lots of strong players struggle with hooking hybrids. The guys at TXG put out an interesting video yesterday where they put Matt into a hybrid with a 2" shorter shaft (and a little heavier) than normal. Which, when you think about it, a shorter shaft is going to give that flatter lie angle that many want/need to avoid the hooks:

There's really no right or wrong answer for the 7 wood vs 3/4 hybrid debate. Especially for us mere mortals swinging driver less than 110 mph. I played both a ton.

Given equal loft and well fit equipment, the hybrid should be a little more accurate and a little lower, while the 7 wood goes higher and farther... for most people. It's worth trying both and figuring out what fits your eye, what you hit well and then determining what your bag needs (as far as distance, height, wind, etc...).

I played 4W, 7W, 4i for a long time but within the past two years switched to 3W, 5W, 4h (21), 5i... just old age and not hitting a 4 iron very well.

I would agree, for me a 7 wood is a course/shot specific club. If you frequently play a course that needs that ball flight, a 7 wood is great. I actually found that with how windy it usually is when I play, and the wind direction changes all the time, a 3 hybrid lofted down is easier to hit consistently, and provides me the shots I need on the courses I play most.

7w has been a game changer for me early this season, high and straight, led to 3 easy 2 putt birdies yesterday on par 5’s. This is in the bag for sure, with the exception of blustery days, then hybrid

I've gone back and forward between the two. I tend to sweep fairway woods but don't like how high the 5 or 7 wood goes (home club is a links course) so eventually settled on a 818 H1 set to 18*. It's a mid launch with enough spin to hold a green. The Titleist surefit sleeve lets me go flat and open (C1) + fade cartridge that virtually eliminated the draw/hook bias of every other hybrid I tried. A properly setup 3H is the consummate all rounder. Good from the tee, the fairway and to punch out under trees. I've even had good success chipping back onto elevated greens when I missed them with the 3H. However, if I was playing parkland courses, especially in the US, I think the 5/7w would probably get more use. I also have a TM UDI at 18* for the REALLY windy days when even a hybrid goes too high. The 3h/5w/7w/2i spot in my bag (200-210m for me) has been hands down the most difficult to settle on. The D, 3w, irons and wedges settled in pretty quickly once I got loft gapping sorted.
