Suzy Whaley - thoughts on her as pga pres?

I'm really surprised she is the pga president. She really didn't seem to have much of a playing career. Just kind-of surprised that she is the pga president. How is it decided (voted on by members or chosen by a board, etc)?

What where the playing records of any of the past PGA of America presidents before her? Or leaders of the USGA, R&A, PGA Tour, ET, etc. A good playing record doesn't mean you will be an effective administrator. Pretty easy to find information on her.

Why does it matter how good of a player she was? How does that make you a better leader?

I think she gained an exemption into a mens pro event one time by winning a PGA Section event (against all men) Or something like that. I'm too lazy to google it right now at 5:30 am.

To me, it could be a weekend warrior. I'd want someone with business experience for this position. Did Roger Goodell or Adam Silver play their respective sports? This is a business.

She is exactly what the PGA needs.

She's a smart and dynamic woman who isnt tied to the old way of doing things. She has led the way in her section and nationally to help grow the game, with the PGA Junior League and Women's Golf.

 

I've heard her speak on a few occasions and she is very insiteful.

If you think anyone’s playing record is relevant to being the PGA of America’s president then I’ll say you would be surprised by this and a lot of other things about the PGA of America. Her ability to play (high by the way, and better than many of her predecessors) is not a factor.

Read her resume, it's very impressive, & she's been one of the top golf instructors for years in both the PGA & the LPGA. One doesn't have to have won majors to be the PGA President. She is well liked and has the respect of both tours. I think she'll be great for the PGA & golf in general.

And that's it in a nutshell. She's been on the job for almost two years and presided over a good PGA Championship last year, and I'm sure it's killing her she won't be presiding over the Ryder Cup this year. But those are just the things that would get the most attention around here, not the only measures of her success/tenure.

And for the record (and in case any numbskull doesn't get my reference above), we can't really give credit to Poulter, she was the first woman officer of the PGA of America in 2014, well before the dustup, so I assume without knowing that put her on a track for moving towards this position.

My guess is OP saw a woman and had some questions.. if a male, assumption is they are qualified.

Given where those two leagues were when they took over vs where they are today, many might argue that those guys are not ones to emulate. And Covid only emphasized their issues.

 

As for SW? I have no idea how she might do. I'm willing to give her a shot.

In an age of affirmative action, explicit or not, is it really unreasonable to question her qualifications just because she is a woman? Isn’t promotion of facially unqualified candidates what affirmative action does in practice, whatever its intent?

Also, it is not uncommon for women with power to use that power to advance the interests of women over the common interest. It is not only accepted but sort of expected or even required that she would do so, to redress the perceived imbalances arising from male privilege.

Being a union isn't a bad thing. But, that's what it is. You pay dues. The PGA "approved" facilities are like union shops. Apprenticeship for 2-3 years depending on education. Members must submit their contract to the local section before accepting a job at a course/club. It promotes the interests of the members. That's pretty much a union.
