just horrible decision making by phil ... a win at the US Open vaults him cleanly into the top 10, probably top 7ish or so ...

People forget that was for three majors in a row for a wrap around at the time (05 PGA, 06 Masters). Only others to do are Tiger and Hogan, both did it in a calendar year (technically Tiger did it 00-01). Dunno if it would have put him past Tiger as #1, but with Tiger missing the cut at the time, would have been a good conversation.

Not at the time, but would have provided him with the grand slam if everything else happened the way it did post tournament. Would have been the sixth man to get the career grand slam.

If you are talking the world rankings Phil wouldn't have been world number 1 had he won the US Open. At that time Tiger had nearly a 6 point lead in the OWGR.

What do you mean, Tiger "technically" didn't get three consecutive majors in a calendar year?  He obviously won the last three of 2000.

If you want to get "technical," he got four consecutive majors in a calendar year -- it just didn't happen to be the Gregorian calendar.  But Tiger is part Thai on his mom's side, and the traditional Thai calendar begins in mid-April (google Songkran if you want details), so he got a Thai Calendar Grand Slam.

And if you want to get even more technical, Hogan didn't win three consecutive majors in 1953.  He won the three he entered, but the PGA, which he didn't enter, was played the week before the British Open in 1953.  So Tiger is the only player to win three consecutive majors, let lone four.

They expect green speeds of around 12 for Sunday.

Tiger also won the Players in 2001, so 5 consecutive majors and the 5th major combined.

greens won't be an issue ... they installed sub air systems a few years ago ... pebble actually has them, also ... this should make control of the course a non-issue, though this IS the usga ...

This time of year when weather is relatively cool and forecast is dry they can get these greens pretty much as fast as they want without fear of losing them.

Generally not a casey guy, but hey why not at 50-1. Played good in PGA. Rory is so over rated at 12-1, 3rd lowest odds.

and i did not know they'd put them in ... think i googled something and saw that ... didn't realize pebble had them, also ... that raises the bar on the usga ... don't know what other rota courses have subair, but i don't think it could be more than one or two at most ... don't think oakmont/shinny have them ...

The good old days of Cobra.  Want to say Acushnet owned them at the time.  The irons were good.  Pre-orange.

Good recall. American Brands, then the corporate parent of Acushnet, bought Cobra in late 1995. Sold Cobra in 2010.

Tiger in 2000 - US Open, British, PGA

Hogan in 1953 - Masters, US, British (the three he played that year).

Also, Tiger 00-01, British, PGA, Masters; same idea as Phil who would have had three wrapped around a "Gregorian" calendar.

Lately, Mark O'Meara and Jordan Spieth also had a shot to get three in one  year.

Thanks for the Thai calendar reference though; might have to talk to my USGA contact on that. Apparently Mike Davis is having a hard time explaining to his dog the Tiger Slam because to the dog it looked like Tiger won 4 majors in 7 years.

Tiger during interview named winged foot, oakmont, and carnoustie as only 3 courses that a major can be played on without much change to how the members play it. Ive played 2 of the 3 (WF and CAR) and pretty much agree. Not sure how anyone could go on a birdie binge with the normal setup.
