Anyone played winged foot? Thoughts ?

 

Hard to go against DJ on any course right now way he's playing. Are tiger and Phil playing?

It was also the first event he played after the passing of his dad. He played the Masters then the US Open.

as big of a fan of DJ that I am, he has to be running on fumes, he just went thru one tough 4 tournament run, I expect a bit of a let down, plus add the fact that he has never been to Winged Foot so no telling if it will fit his eye and if he can find some sight lines to which he can "SEND IT"...would love to see him in the thick of it...

I don't see DJ maintaining his recent high level.  Just hard to sustain it.

My money is on JT at Winged Foot...he's playing really well, and I think DJ will have a post FedEx let down...

I can see Rahm and JT putting together some good rounds and taking it home.

 

Of course I’d love to see Tiger win.

He's been at a pretty high level since 2016.  Ending all years top 5, with one top 1, not to mention also ending the 2020 season (I think it's ended already Aug 30 with the wraparound starting soon) at number 1.  He's not winning 5 a year, but 2 to 4 a year is real impressive.

I read that Rahm played it last week and said something to the affect that the winning score would be over par. The last two tournaments were played on demanding golf courses, so maybe that was good prep going into the US Open.

I definitely like the chances of Xander and Justin Thomas, and if Winged Foot ends up playing like a genuinely "old-school", 1970s/1980s style U.S. Open, I won't be surprised to see guys like Brendon Todd, Webb Simpson, or even Kevin Kisner contending.

I think Morikowa is going to be in the hunt with his tactical game 

JT should be up there if he can get off to a good start and keep his attitude neutral 

Xander is due

I do see that Danny Noonan is making a return to the caddy barn.  He’s looping in the US Open this year.     Now if we could have had qualifying and got Carl in the field , wed have had a show.

Golfweek article with the super says he wants 8 over.  Shin deep rough, narrowed fairways and no mention of greens in the article but stated that currently the course is firm and fast.

Saw winged foot 2006 but have only fluffed memories of the course.18th of course with Phil out to the left and Grumpy losing another. Oglivy from nowhere. My memories of the course are rather positive, some distinctive, memorable holes pretty woody, not too much water, hilly??. Well, its always interesting to see a tournament on a course after a long time. Remember most smirking at another Grumpy Major fail. Not a crowd pleaser, that player.

I don't see how someone who's not keeping it in the fairway can win. When DJ is on like now he's the best driver in the game. Like how he won at oakmont with the power fade. He's really turned it up a notch or two since koepkas cheap shot at the PGA. DJ is a "let the club's do the talking" kind of guy. A win here would really vault him to the next level. He's gotta be the favorite.

 

Rahm's short game is brilliant but with thick rough around greens making everyone pretty much the same, that skill is less an advantage. 

 

Rory just too inconsistent all the way around. I kind of think of thomas the same way (but not as bad).

 

Hard for me to come up with anyone else...the course reminds me a lot of oakmont where DJ won, and with him playing well and motivated to shut up koepka, I'm staying with him as a heavy favorite.

I'll go Spieth. He used to missing every fairway and grinding. Now everyone else will have a go with that stragetie. 

 

I do think if the course is going to be a tough as they are saying it's really wide open. Someone could get hot with the driver and just make a lot of pars. Someone not on anyone's radar.

there are standards for a thread about a major ... field, tv times, course info, etc ... this is golfwrx, not some floozy, frat board with a bunch of pxgers ...

I backed Morikawa the moment I read he lead fairways hit in SF.  Winged Foot is a bar steward of a track and the greens have recently been remodelled. Holding them from the rough will be nigh on impossible so fairway finders will prosper.
