Tiger during interview named winged foot, oakmont, and carnoustie as only 3 courses that a major can be played on without much change to how the members play it. Ive played 2 of the 3 (WF and CAR) and pretty much agree. Not sure how anyone could go on a birdie binge with the normal setup.

I'll never have this problem but walking onto a course knowing I have no chance to keep it under 100 doesn't appeal too much, no matter the history, prestige, the flowing robes, etc.  How/why does a member sign up for that?  I bet they have a nice pool though, it's got to be the pool right?

Why are Tigers odds  @28/1?

I dont see him make the cut. And this is coming from a Tiger Woods fan.

The general answer is that the odds are a reflection not only of the players' form, but of the betting interest.  Tiger is such a fan favorite that a disproportionate amount of money will be bet on him, so the casinos have to protect themselves in case he somehow manages to win.  They decrease his payout accordingly.

The more specific answer is that he's Tiger.  He won the Masters just last year against a stacked leader board, and the ZOZO against a very strong field after that.  He certainly isn't as consistent as he was in his prime, but if he has a good week, he can still beat anybody.

I want a good old school US Open blood bath. The year of COVID deserves nothing less. Carnage I say. Phil wins at +10 with a chip in on 18. Ferguson will quit the Internet. ?

TW 28-1 to win?

I’d barely consider putting money on him at 28-1 to make the cut, ?

I've been saying this for years. If you gave golfers the choice of a game at Winged Foot or the local suburban club 99% would choose Winged Foot. If after the game, they then get to choose a membership at Winged Foot or the local suburban club 99% would say not Winged Foot.

One thing that always kind of bugs me, now listening to the pre-tourn interview with Thomas - This about "embracing the course is hard". Really - what does it matter if the golf course is easy or difficult in a Golf Tournament? It's the same for everyone. Say holes 16-18 are renamed as par 5´s(the reasonable par for me at the moment), then all those three holes are easy??
What matters, I would suppose,  is if it's a course that sets up different for different kind of players. If long drives are rewarded and so on? A result on a hole is relevant only in relation to what other players get on the hole? You play against the other players? When Thomas goes on about yeah its hard grind blah blah is he only bullshitting to make the journalists happy?

Harder course favors several including tiger and Phil IF they get mentally engaged to the challenge.     Going to be fun I think.    Think on it.  Do you see tiger or Phil shooting +10 for 2 days and missing the cut ? I don’t.  I legitimately think +6 to +8 will be the cut line. Can’t wait.

Not BS. It’s a mindset.   Most people hate playing golf in the rain.  For whatever reason I love it.  I like “ grey “ days. I can see better.  I smile on tournament days whne it’s rainy. Why ?  My score isn’t going to change. But everybody else is pouting and beating themselves griping about the rain.    He’s saying that.  He’s loving the difficulty knowing he doesn’t have to go low.  All he has to do is survive.  Let everybody else kill themselves and then try to be out front on Sunday.   In other words he loves the difficulty.  Harder the better.

If "you don't have to do much to host a US Open," and +8 fires a four day +8, that can't be fun at any length of tees.

So, I run in the camp that "you don't have to do much to host a US Open" is not close to factual.  Sort of along the lines of the old saw, "The USGA actually had to slow down the greens when they came here," heard in the past in reference to different places.

I agree with the posters above.  I would not enjoy playing a course that beats me up every round.  Going out knowing I'm going to lose two balls and three putt six times is not my prescription for fun.  I believe that Richard has said that the members at Oakmont take kind of a perverse pleasure in having a course that is on the edge of playable all the time.

With the US Open it's a once a year thing. The players know going in that it's going to be a tough test. It's not like they play under these conditions every week. But yeah, playing under those conditions all the time would not be much fun.

I think DJ's rocks for brains is actually an asset for him under pressure and with golf in general. Definitely doesn't have to worry about overthinking it once someone helps him tie his shoes, its just swing it time.

Sounds like my nephew. The kid is as stupid as toothpaste, but can sure swing a club.

Hard to go against DJ on any course right now way he's playing. Are tiger and Phil playing?

The place is a beast, especially if the rough is long.  You just can’t imagine how thick that stuff is!  My club was supposed to marshal one of the holes this year, but with Covid and no attendees there was no need. Their members could handle any needs.

Fortunate to have played it once.  In the summer in dry conditions.

I didn't remember it being crazy from tee to green.  Of course, I was not playing the course from 7500 yards, and I wasn't playing the course with that kind of rough.

What I do remember is the green complexes.  Insane and beautiful.  Just about every single green is distinctive and memorable.  If you miss it in the wrong place, you are absolutely dead.   There is plenty of undulation on the green complexes.  I was listening to a show describing them as relatively flat.  Certainly not how I remember them.
