Sell it all or build a backup bag?

Duffner's Waggle

Recommended Posts

Well I am trying (once again) to end the search for the magic club(s) and instead stop buying and just commit to my current bag.

that said, I have some nice stuff still laying around. I could sell it all off, pay off my paypal balance and come out ahead a couple hundred bucks, or I could build a “backup” set or a “travel” set.

I’ve heard of such things before, but never really built one. I have a great set of Srixon Z545 3-GW, some RTX4 wedges, a Ping g25 4w, an Adams DHy Pro 21*, a Ping G400 Stretch, a nice Cleveland Huntington Beach putter, and a great cart bag to store it all in.

While I don’t have a “driver” in the bag, the stretch is long enough to fill that role, giving me essentially an entire mishmashed back up set.

I guess my hesitation is...I totally recognize the risk of damaged equipment, but if I was traveling to golf, I think I’d want my own sticks? And then there’s $5-600 sittin in a bag in a closet, doin nothin productive.

Do you have a backup bag? A travel bag?

Any advice?

If you are traveling quite a bit, I would have a 2nd set that I would bring if you don't mind lugging the travel bag along (if flying).  It's also nice to have options just incase you fall out of favor with one of your gamer clubs and want to change things up from time to time.

I've gone on a bit of a buying spree the last week or so, so now I have 3 full bags as well as other stuff laying around.  But I would always rather have gear I'm familiar with than rent.

I'm sitting on my old stuff. Still relevant. Courses didn't grow where I play. I'm old and will suck when I get out there again.

Tell ya what...GRAPHITE and it's expense will maybe slow ya down? Plunked aerotechs in my '08 AP2's and happy as a clam (for now....ha)

But don't trade cool old stuff for pennies. Not worth it at all. Give things new life. Love doing that.

Yea the srixons are probably worth way more in my mind than on the actual market because of sentimental value and if I was gonna unload them for like $200 I’d just assume keep em. I don’t travel a ton but could potentially travel more in the coming years.

The other perk to doing this is it climatizes the significant other to having more golf gear around, so more can be sneaked in with less notice.  Tho mine did go into the garage the other day and just shook her head when she saw like 5 iron sets and 4 bags laying around.  Little did she know that there was still a couple sets in my work shop and 2 in the laundry room...

I dont have a backup bag because I dont travel golf nor ever need backups. IMO if your swing is good, you can swing anything even a rental set somewhere.

With that said I do have a 'shaft bag' that is mostly shafts/pulls and spare clubs/putters that arent being used.

The backup bag for me is the spouses clubs plus a few wedges and shafts etc.  If I travel and they get ruined I can put a claim in through my visa for up to a year after purchase for full reimbursement.  And I carry travel insurance each time I fly so I’m covered there as well. There’s a risk but it’s small.  I vote to unload everything but you truly need. Including those fairway woods lol. Spare wedges and shafts make some sense to keep

I'm the opposite.  If I have gear laying around that I haven't sold off, it's here because it still works and I know what I am getting from it.  I will score basically the same regardless of what gear I have in my hands of what I have to choose from.  I know the main issue to not playing well is me, not the club in my hand once I get to the course.

I've never sat over the ball thinking 'gee, I sure wish I had [enter w/e club here] in my hands, I know it wouldn't let me down...'.

I had a similar idea and put together a back up bag earlier this year. Was intending to leave it at my parents house near myrtle beach where I play a few times a year. What ended up happening is when I traveled I really wanted to be playing my “gamers” and it didn’t make much sense to leave that $ sitting in a corner somewhere. Sold everything in my gamer bag and backup bag and put together one set I love.

Quite sure.  I've been battling my driver swing demons long enough.  World class on the range, 25+ capper 80% of the time on course...  Last 2 rounds have been my best driving rounds, actually using a driver in the past 10 years.  Became very comfortable pounding strong 3woods off the tee for far too long.  Tho pretty dam funny to get to this point while having the Sim rocket fairway as it is just stupid long and more often than not around 10 yr carry less than driver, just doesn't get the roll.

Sounds like a great setup for a winter bag, simulator rounds, and travel.  My thinking is a true backup bag duplicates your regular set.  Keep a second set because you like variety, don’t play competitively, or wish to keep your gamers in better condition.  Don’t keep a second set if your game is sensitive to changes, you value playing the latest & greatest, or your household is not financially stable enough to do so.

I have about 4.5 complete sets and try to rotate bags with the seasons.  It’s really too much for the limited amount of golf I play (especially this year).  But I enjoy the variety, even knowing it hurts the quality of my game.

I entered my fall golf season with 3 full bags, until I donated my old juniors set to a local First Tee organization.  It's something that my wife has commented on:  I'll pick up a hobby (or in this case, get back into a hobby), and all the sudden, have 14 of those items.  I'm currently sitting on 2 full sets:  One set of Ping Zing 2's set in a gifted 80's Ram bag (with a selection of last-century drivers), and my modern set seen in my sig line.  Backup bag?  Not sure if that's an accurate descriptor, but I do aspire to challenge myself to quirky things like Stacked Golf on Youtube does, and play something like 3-hole stints with old/antique clubs, just to appreciate how far we've come.

If I'm going to the trouble and expense of taking clubs with me I'm going to take the first string, not a backup set.   If someone is worried about damage there are things that can be done to reduce that risk at lower cost than an extra set.

I know some that have a second set stored at a second home.   If they get used a lot and cargo space when traveling is tight, that has some merit, IMO.

Unless you know the 2nd set is going to get. a lot of use or you have real sentimental value attached to them, I would pay down the PayPal.   Left alone, that will increase and the value of the clubs is only going to decrease.

like Kurt Cobain & Cardoustie above said, this is WRX Duff!! you need a backup of the backup bag! ... then there's the minimalist bag ... the list is endless  😀

i have a backup bag which is kinda close to my gamer bag except the irons are the older alliteration of Apex Pro; i am super glad i do have a backup set as my 9 iron needed replacing on my gamers and i had to wait 2 weeks for a replacement and i couldnt play without my 9i as i love that club, so the trusty backup bag payed off for me.
