G425 Wedges vs Glide 3.0 (or other)

jetandollie

Recommended Posts

This season I got the G425 irons - and absolutely love them. Like many others here I burn through clubs and sets like a madman. These are not going anywhere.

I am a little bit torn on what to do. The set wedges (P, U, S, L) all have the same grooves as the Glide 3.0. I have never been a set wedge guy before, but wedge play on both full shots and around the green has always been my weakest point. I have done a lot of practicing with the U (50*) set wedge. It is really the first club I have ever used where the grass stains and wear marks are on the bounce side, and not the leading edge. It is just super comfortable to hit.

Am I out of my mind electing to get the S (54*) and L (58*) over Glide's or other single wedges?

My attitude on wedges is I don't like the heavy backing of the game improvement type wedges in my higher lofted "feel" clubs, as they just come off too hot with too little control. But you're only out of your mind playing them if they're not working for you and you feel like you struggle dialing in touch. If you find that's the case, then try out glide wedges in the 54+ range.

I play SGI irons (OG Ping Raptures) with the Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth's.

The Glides are some of my favorite clubs in my bag. Pretty forgiving, without that clunky SGI look. I don't mind the look of SGI irons, but have a hard time looking at SGI wedges. My mind just can't get past the fact that an SGI wedge can be as versatile as non-SGI wedge. It just doesn't feel right.

The Ping Glides are amazing wedges. They are more forgiving then Vokeys (in my experience), while not having a clunky GI/SGI look to them.

I don't know anything about the 425 series wedges, so can't comment on them. But I don't think you can go wrong with the Glides.

I know nothing about the 425 wedges, but always had good success with my Glide 3.0's. However, I recently switched from them to Sub 70 JB wedges, and let me tell you, I'm in love. Best feeling clubs I've ever hit. Great on full shots, great on touch shots, great with the face opened up, great off grass, the low bounce 58* is money off any kind of tight lie. Definitely worth checking out.

I’ve never hit the G wedges but own the Glide 3.0 wedges, SS in the 50 and Eye2 in the 54 and 60. They’re fantastic and easy to hit. Love hitting full shots from my 58 now. I’d highly suggest getting the 54 with the Eye2 design. I really enjoy tipping the 58 on its toe and hitting tight lie chips around the green with that wedge.

My wedge play has improved dramatically with minimal thin or fat chip shots from these wedges.

UW/50* is a full shot most of the time. After that, you could go 54, 58/60* in the Glides. Personally, not a lot of use for a 60*, so I go UW, then 56* SS in Glide 3.0.

I have the Glide 3.0 in 54 and 58 Eye 2 in the same specs as my irons right now. I'm waiting on my G425 irons to ship so I'm curious to see how they blend from the UW to the 54. I'm probably about 50/50 with my UW on chipping and full shots. The face is really hot and noticeably different chipping with my G700 UW.

If the UW for the G425 is even remotely closer with the same groove I think between the UW and SW is a good breaking point if you choose to go with the Glide. I'm guessing shaft comes into play with using set wedges or the Glide as well. I had my Glide 3.0 done with the same shafts (Recoil 780) as my G700. They will be different as I'm getting the stock Alta in my G425.

I could look at changing wedges in the future but not with the wait times we are experiencing now.

Last year when I ordered my G410's I ordered them through the 54*SW and 58*LW. I like the wedges a lot. If you like your U wedge I wouldn't say you were out of your mind for getting the matching wedges if you like the bounce of the wedges.

I recently grabbed a used Glide 2.0 wedge 58* to my specs with less bounce and the verdict is still out. I will probably keep it in the bag because I do more with my LW than the other wedges. As far as my G410 SW I'm keeping it in the bag for sure.

The stock wedges are good. Unless you want less bounce getting the stock wedges isn't an awful idea.

Gaming the Glide 3.0 50 SS and the 56 EYE2. The grinds, grooves and bounce differences work well for me. High ball spin with wet conditions is a bonus.
Something to consider is the Glide’s stock swing weight (D2), when club sets can progress to D2.5 and D3 in their higher lofted clubs.  Issues can be exaggerated when a LW is say, D4 or D6... so getting that sorted may help your consistency.

Lee Westwood plays i210 with two UW, one at 50* and the other at 53/54* and then has a specialist 60*. If it works for him then why couldn’t it work for you?

It all depends on how you use your wedges. For me, I tend to only manipulate a lob wedge and the others are for square faced chips, pitches, and longer shots. So since that’s the case, I would pick up the UW and SW in the G425. I may manipulate the SW if I have a long bunker shot, but that’s such a rarity. The LW is where I might struggle because I’m not sure how the G425 handles the sole width and if there’s any grind to it. It would only matter for normal to tight lies when trying to open the face, but if I can’t play a certain shot with the G425 then that’s when I would decide to go with a Glide 3.0 with a little less bounce and a sole grind that suits how I need to use that particular wedge.

If it were me, since you love the G425 so much, I would order the remaining wedges in the G425 to try. You’ll always wonder “what if” unless you try them first hand on course. Then, if you happen to find that one of them isn’t quite performing how you need to perform, you can then make a more educated decision to switch to the Glide 3.0 and also be more knowledgeable on what type of bounce/grind/loft you would want based on that feedback.

Give my take:

Toe hang on G irons, especially the wedges - is the deal breaker for me. I tried multiple grinds on the G25 UW-- just never could get over that long blade length[toe hang weight]

Glide all day long or specialty wedges

This time of the year in my area the rough tends to be thicker and juicier than just about any other time.   It’s all about confidence so go with the 425 wedges but keep a smaller blade type for the heavy green side rough days.

I just put a 60° Cleveland RTX zip core raw in the bag and am able to control it fairly well or at least a bit better in the thick rough.

BTW the RTX zip cores are awesome.

I have always just ordered a set of irons up to the “U” wedge and used blade S and L irons.

When I bought my 410’s I ordered the S wedge also.

After 200 rounds , I have found I hardly use the 410 S wedge.

It is ok for full shots from  the fairway or rough but it looks pretty big trying to hit a shot out of a green side bunker.   Our bunkers are usually not maintained that well and are very firm.

The low bounce Callaway sand wedge is better for me out of those sand shots.   (The Ping Glide wedges are just as good)

As far as other partial shots around the green , I can use either the 410 U wedge or S wedge.    Either do the same job. I kind of prefer the U in most cases. It has a more predictable amount of rollout.  Sometimes the S gives me some unplanned for spin.          If I need to hit a soft landing flop shot , I go back to the blade type wedge.

I carried a blade type L wedge for years but quit using it also.   The 56 does the job for me.

I like specialty wedges for green side work.  In the recent past, however, when PING offered different grinds for the set wedges, I'd go that route for consistent feel.  Since that's not an option (and I'm not playing newer offerings), it's Glide 2.0s for me...

I just got a set of G425’s in 5-SW with a Glide LW. I had this same setup in G30 and G400. I use the SW for “full” shots which fo me is up to 95 yards and I like the benefits of the 425 forgiveness. The longest I hit LW shots is 50 yards and I find the Glide works well.

I have G425 4-LW. I enjoy having the set wedges and have never felt like they have hampered my game at all. I have had glide 2.0 in the past and currently have a glide 3.0 54* but still use the set wedges. Sure they are chunky looking but the rest of the irons are as well. I don’t know of many other sets where  I would have as much confidence with a 4 iron as I do with these. And I have just as much confidence with my L wedge around the green.

I play with a guy who just got the 425’s and I was surprised to see he had the U and S in 425 but after watching him get up and down all day with them maybe I need to be more open minded.   He plays to a 3 but great short game.    I know he has a TM high toe 60 but I rarely saw him use it.

I have the 6-uw 425's on order and am really liking my Glide 50* wedge right now. It is very versatile for a lot of shots. I was playing G700 and the UW in the set does not work around the greens at all. I even preferred it over the F9 uw. So will I play the 425 uw? I will try it for a few rounds and see how it works out. I hope it stays in the bag. The big thing about set wedges for me is a graphite shat, and it makes a huge difference. I shank steel shafts but graphite not so much. The glide is graphite shafted.

@jetandollie resurrecting an year old topic since I am in the same boat. I have the Callaway CB gap, sand and lob wedges which I really like especially for their forgiving nature but I am struggling to transition between my G425 irons plus Wedge and the Callaway CB during the game may be due to the difference in shafts and weight. I am thinking to get the U G425 wedge - did you end up getting them and how’s your experience so far?

When I take the club back[chips/pitches green side] - the toe hangs momentarily. It is the exact same with extreme toe hang putters with me - as I'm using the same stroke.

Blade length being long & the added toe weight isn't for my game...I cannot make G series wedges work in any terms green side. I tried wrx  grinds to no avail

Here are my two cents:

I play the G425 UW for full shots and when I don't feel confident in a bad lie around the greens. Especially if it's wet.

Otherwise all my shots around the greens are with my Glide Forged 54 degree (love it!). Maybe my 58  degree if I need to stop quickly (it's a Glide 3.0).

If I had the opportunity, I would consider a 50 degree Glide Forged. Just because the feel of the Glide Forged...

But the G425 UW is really good.

I have the G425 irons in graphite up to the U wedge. Was thinking about the S and Lob from the set or the new Glide 4s. Ended up with 54 and 58 in CBX2, not least because are substantially cheaper. The CBX also blends nicely with the irons.

Thank you. Getting the G425 UW as I need it for those 110 to 120 yard full shots but I will keep my Callaway CB SW(56) and LW(60) for now as I don’t play full shots with them. May be just keep the SW for green side work as well so I don’t have to carry 4 wedges.
