Whats your practice regimen? any suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Gotten back into golf about six months ago after a 10 years hiatus. was playing once a week, now i am playing minimum once a week plus trying to get in as much practice etc as possible.

Currently across a week i aim to:

1x 18 holes

2x yoga session

1x range practice - not just hit random balls, but work on something specific, make changes from recent lessons into permanent fixtures of swing

1x short game practice - free, nice to go to local chipping/putting green

swing orange whip at home, putt on my putting mat all the time

wondering what other people try to do given the option of playing a full round once a week, practice sessions twice a week, and then exercise at home. practice sessions could mean goign to range or just doing short game practice twice a week, etc.

Between my work/home life, I usually only have time to play with limited time to practice. I try to get to the club about 30-45 minutes before my tee time to hit about 30 balls and a few chips/putts.

If I had the option to practice more, I'd spend 80% of that time putting and working on my short game. I've seen a number of high-profile teachers talk about how spending hours on the range beating balls is one of the worst things an amateur can do. The range should be for warming up before a round or working on a very specific swing thought/technique.

"I mean, listen, we're talking about practice. Not a game. Not a game. Not a game. We're talking about practice. Not a game."

But in seriousness, in my off season (I coach football plus my regular job) On season I'm lucky to get 18 a week

Play 18 holes once or twice

One large bucket: 50% 9I and down. 20% Driver/3wood, 5 wood. 30% mid irons. I'm usually trying to work or ingrain something from my coach in these seasons.

I have a putting mat at home and I use it during lunch on my two work from home days.

Short game is part of my session if I really think about it that 50% is usually 35% LW SW GW hitting it high/low different follow through ect

In all honesty get a lesson first, you want to make sure you know what to practice and not ingrain something bad. Trust me it s%^$s trying to fix something you ingrained over years of repetition.

I head to the club with a bag full of balls and see how many I can lose in 9 holes playing 3+ at a time. The goal is to hit most every club from a few different spots.

My short game about 75% of my total practice time.  That consists of chipping, short pitches, very short flop shots, and putting.  I work from level lies and hill side lies and from all different angles to the green.  Unfortunately, my home course removed the practice sand trap, so I haven't worked on sand play in a while.  This year I started using tees when working on putting, e.g., tee tunnels, tees in a line to putt from, etc.  Sometimes I'll play par 3 chip & putt.  I often spend at least an hour on the practice green several times a week.

For the driving range, I always use alignment sticks, and I'm intentional with whatever I'm working on rather than just hitting ball after ball.  I try to hit the range at least twice a week.

I play about twice a week, but never take whatever I'm working on to the course.  Instead, it's my goal to let it naturally integrate into my game.

This one comes up every month or two.

You have to start by deciding how many days or hours you can spend at the course and what your goal is.

I play 4 days a week and practice 2 days a week. As far as practice goes 70+ percent of my practice is spent inside 100 yards unless there is a functional issue I am feeling/seeing with my swing during the round that I have to fix.

Everyone has different goals and their games are in different stages.

really solid answers! i am getting lessons now and all of my range time is thinking about what my pro is giving me to work on and making that part permanent. I try to get to the range once a week to do that, and then go to the practice green as much as possible to get the feel of my wedges back and also putting. wish i lived next door to it, since it is a short drive, but its great to have there.

I play twice a week sometimes 3x if I have time and try to get to the range once a week.  As far as outside stuff for golf, I'm a personal trainer so I do all the things I need to in the gym 4 to 5 times a week.

I've that what is most helpful is to make a few dozen swings at home each day, no striking golf balls, just making swings. This keeps my body's muscles loose and ready for when I visit the driving range and, or, play golf.

If I can get to the range enough, I try to shove this all in a week.  If not, that’s life and I just keep

it in order.  I try to play as often as possible.

My biggest weaknesses are lag putting and approach.  So I try to prioritize that while still improving the others.

Practice 1:

Putting- 40/50/60+ to 2ft long/1 short

Swing Drills

Irons: 90-140yd decade combine

Driver: Punch/3/4/full/max

Practice 2:

Putting- Decade combine

Swing drills

irons: 140-190yd decade combine

Bunker: seve drill

Practice 3:

Pitching/Chipping- 2,1,3,2,4 trajectory drills, 3 clubs

long game- 140-235yd decade combine

Driver- Max

Right now I am really focusing on my short game but my week looks like this.

4 full Rounds Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

1 Golf related Physiotherapy session followed up with a related work out then a swing lesson

Then I sneak out on the course after 6 when possible on the other days with my kid and practice just short game.

Sundays I play 18 then go to the spare 5th hole and putt, chip, practice approach shots from 100 yards in.

Right now I am playing to a 2.6 HCP and would like to get that down to scratch in the next year.

Basically, it’s a 20 shot combine where you measure the lateral dispersion of your shots.  The app has some AR functionality to help you visualize 10 and 20yds offline (each direction) from your target.

There are 3 different distance combine that essentially cover 4 clubs each (SW, GW,PW, 9i) etc.

The app adds the total offline amount (which you input to the yard) over the 20 shots and that’s your score.  It also has D1 college benchmarks for the combines.  The lower the score, the better.

There are more advance combines (requiring accuracy long/short+ left/right) but require an advanced LM (Trackman, GCquad, flightscope etc.) which I don’t have regular access to.

The combines help quantify my practice (and progress) in a way that other methods haven’t to date.

HIGHLY recommend the app/system.  Also acknowledge that it isn’t for everyone.
