Carry bag for early mornings

Recommended Posts

Been looking at getting a carry bag but I only play early mornings and with the wet grass, wanted to get some feedback from others. I know the bag itself is waterproof but I assume you get wet as you pick up your bag. I know you can buy those wooden legs to stand up your bag but that seems like a PIA to set up each time and I already have a stand bag.

headed to Bandon in sept so I may get one anyways but would like to use it for my normal rounds. I just don’t want to buy a bag and not use it after a few rounds. So any feedback would be appreciated.

as a morning player, I'd go with a stand bag instead of legless.

walking with the bag slung sounds so cool until things are wet and grassy.

plus, bugs get inside.

Yeah that makes sense and sounds like it’s an overwhelming no for early morning golf. Too bad cause love the look of them but I ended up going with the sun mountain 2.5.

My main bag is a 2.5+
it’s a great lightweight bag for full time or just Sunday use.

According to Ping the Moonlight has a "water resistant belly".  Might search out some reviews on it.

My titleist has the tiny legs to keep clubs about an inch off the ground and Waterproof belly, towel draped through clubs. It stays pretty dry, haven’t had any issues and I only use it early mornings or late evenings. Don’t lie it down in long grass generally though.

I walk early mornings all the time and have tried many different bags including:  Ping Moonlite, Jones Stripeshow, Jones Trouper 2.0, Trouper 3.0, Ping L8, SM 2.5, Ping Hoofer Crazelite, TM Litetech 3.0, TM Flextech Lite, Mizuno K1-LO ultralight, and my go to - Ping Hoofer Lite.

I'm very particular with my bag (clearly) and for me, the best bag in terms of quality, durability, features, and looks is the current model Hoofer Lite.

This is by no means a full review but here are some of the things that stand out to me (good and bad):

Moonlite - Feature rich and quality Sunday bag.  Liked the waterproof belly but I didn't like having to transfer clubs back and forth between that and a stand bag.

Stripeshow - Super stylish and quality carry bag.  Will occasionally use this but like the Moonlite, it can't be my primary bag.

Trouper 2.0 - The carry balance was just off.  Even after multiple adjustments, it feels like the clubs are going to fall out.  Hated the drawstring cooler pocket.  Club layout was awesome.

Trouper 3.0 - Very similar to 2.0.  Cooler pocket was much improved.  Very stylish bags.

Ping L8 - single strap was too slippery.  Probably the best looking bag out of all of these.  Disappointing.

SM 2.5 - While the balance was fine, the bottom of the bag seemed to carry too far forward.  Almost as if the bag was hugging me.  Hard to explain.

Crazelite - Great ultralight bag.  Not a fan of the color options.  I somehow got one on a deal but normally I think it's too expensive.

Litetech 3.0 - wanted to like this.  Liked the valuables pocket was below a cart strap.  Quality and construction issues caused me to return.

Flextech Lite - Very similar to the Hoofer Lite but this too had quality issues.

2021 K1-LO - Really liked the solid black bag with minimal logos and branding.  Bag started to come apart in places less than two months in.

2021 Hoofer Lite - This is my second Hoofer Lite in the last few years and I wonder why I ever go away from it.  Very high quality construction.  Love the improvements including the cart strap passthrough and the better designed water bottle pocket.  Sure the materials are heavier than an ultralight, but these things are built to last.

Honestly, the only benefit I can see for a carry bag with no stand is if you give bonus points for the cool retro vibe. The courses I play are almost never completely dry everywhere when I play and life's too short to spend the whole round searching for a dry spot to carefully place your legless bag so it or your clubs or your towel won't get wet.

Now that there are stand bags in every weight class right on down to 2.something pounds it isn't like you're going to make carrying any easier by foregoing the stand. Quite the opposite, you're making things more difficult.

And don't even get me started on the guy I played with once who had one of those uber-expensive, legless, leather MacKenzie bags. We were playing on a wet morning and he carried a pair of crossed wooden sticks in the bag alongside the clubs. Before each and every shot he pulled out the stick, unfolded them and carefully propped the bag up on the sticks to keep it dry. Then after the shot, picked up the bag, folded the sticks and stuck them back in. I couldn't believe it, so much effort in an attempt to look cool and retro!

Actually Martinizing means clothes could be dry cleaned in the store and not sent out to a dry cleaning plant

Never did care for pork rinds tho

There just aren’t many options that look this good. You are missing a highly individual component: taste (and people who have it). More storage volume than you would think, too: maybe 2% less than my Sun Mountain Series One stand bag.

This bag looks amazing and I'm all about minimalist carry bags but trestle sticks seem like an annoying waste of time and pain in the  a**.   Why not lay the bag on the ground? That's what I do with my Jones carry bag.

Boring consumerism is walking into a big box golf store and walking out with whatever Hoofer/Sun Mountain stand bag.

I am fully onboard with this general line of thinking and would never use trestle sticks while playing. I play with a push cart and only use the sticks when practicing. It’s nice to be able to prop the bag up when there isn’t a stand nearby. Also pleasant aesthetically.

While I’ll admit there is definitely a tinge-probably even more than tinge-of hipster with Mackenzie/Seamus (I own a fescue bag), it is also nice to support smaller companies with handmade pieces. So, yes, you pay a premium for handmade vs machine, but you’re getting a solidly made product. When I’ve had an issue with my bag, I was able to send it back and they fixed it at no charge.

as far as the dewy mornings, the waxed canvas on my bag never takes in water and has been fine. No issues with towels getting wet unless you’re sloppily lying the bag down.

It’s also fun to explain to new people my bag is only 5 years old and not from the 50s with the Harris tweed haha

It's not like Geppetto stitched it with needle and thread

Seamus $600 for a bag that doesn't even hold 12 clubs is definite hipster land

Get a Ping Moonlite and have plenty left over for $10 artisan coffee and $ 12 IPA's

Owners must laugh everytime they sell one
