Golf Pride Z Grip Cord vs Lamkin UTx

PilotSports

Recommended Posts

Thanks to the feedback from users in this forum, and a lot of testing this weekend, I’ve finally settled my grip choices down to a Golf Pride Z grip cord or Lamkin UTx. Primary drivers for selecting these are moisture management both in hot, humid weather and rain. Has anyone had experience with both these grips in those conditions? If so, which did you find held up better?

I have tried both. I felt as though the utx had more taper and was softer than the z-cord.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

I just switched from UTx to Z-Cord.  They’re both great grips and I would happily play either in any conditions.  My hands sweat a ton so moisture management is my primary concern when choosing a grip.

Z-Cord is firmer and has much more aggressive cord which makes them rougher on the hands and glove.  You’ll get better feedback from Z-Cord and you will feel it when you miss a shot.  The UTx are tacky, which is rare for a cord grip.

I’d say for me, the Z-Cord get a slight nod in wet weather or sweaty performance (UTx isn’t bad) but the UTx are more comfortable and I enjoy them more on a dry day that isn’t 90+ degrees. Also, if you play in cold weather, you better hit it pure with the Z-Cord or it’s gonna hurt…

All valid points, and you’re right about cold weather for sure! One big difference between the two is price. The UTx is $3 cheaper per grip which means you can change them out more often without paying out the nose. Do you think the Z grip lasts longer than UTx?

I’m a Z Cord guy as well. UTx was always a bit slick feeling to me for a cord. Probably because of the softer material and less aggressive cord itself.

UTx were very durable for me.  I easily got 100+ rounds out of them.  Z-Cords have been on all year and I have 66 rounds on them so they’re still going strong.  I’m not a range rat though so that saves some wear.

What everyone else has said. I’m in UTX at the moment but preferred Z-grip Cords.

I also found the UTX to be a bit of a pain to install. They are flimsy like most rubber grips, but don’t stretch like say a tour velvet because of the cord in the UTX. So they wanted to hang up on my the first inch or two of the shaft. Once I got past that portion they went on the rest of the way smoothly. The z-grips are somewhat rigid and slide right on without much, if any resistance.

You’re definitely right about UTx being softer. Have you tried either in wet weather? Wondering which of the two holds up better.

Didn’t really play either it wet weather but I sweat a lot and think the z grip cord was better for that. But it’s worth noting I don’t play either currently. I think I’d happily play either but would build up the bottom hand of the utx. The regular lamkin cross line is my grip of choice. Some of that is a price choice and some a longevity choice. They last quite a while. But I have a mix of tour velvet on right now too because I can’t find any cross lines in stock.

Really depends on the amount of cord you want. I find the UTX to be a great hybrid type grip. Has just enough cord that for me is great in hot humid days or rain (I use rain gloves too). UTX is noticeable softer but would say a soft grip per se. Z Cord tears up my hands and gloves. I suppose they provide more “grip” but for me they are too harsh on my hands. I play a lot of golf in the spring and fall here in the northeast and as somebody stated they are brutal on the hands in cold weather if not struck pure.

+1,

fwiw, I found the Zcords too rough on my hands. I switched to Lamkin Crossline Cords.

Z Grip is more like the Crossline Cord than UTx. UTx is "cord like" with a fabric weave, but not going to provide the same traction or moisture management as Z Grip or Crossline Cord.

UTX for me, the Z was a little too firm for my liking and I love the extra tack on the UTX. I always hit the UTX with a brass club cleaning brush to get the cord showing a little more right out of the jump. I also have always found Lamkin to last longer than GP for me. Both are solid choices but do play slightly different.

UTX for me, prefer the softer feel as Z-Cord are very harsh and seemed to go dry and hard very quickly. My UTX seem like they will last way longer on that front. I can understand some of the complaints about the UTX with a lack of cord but get some soapy water and a stiff brush on them every now and then and the cord comes back out and they get super tacky which is great for hot weather. I think on the black/blue colourway in particular its mainly that the cord is hard to see so some don't sense it's there if that makes sense. IMO if you want more heavily corded grip than the UTX just go with the classic Lamkin Crossline Cord, smack in between the UTX and Z Cord for me and really hard to beat.

.....or if hot weather is the main issue, just go leather.

I prefer the UTx.  I've used them off and on over the years and always liked the feel of them.  I've tried the Z Cord on drivers when other cord grips weren't available, and didn't hate them, but didn't like them enough to put on other clubs.

I prefer Lamkin Crossline (Cord and non-cord) and the UTx grip.  I've used all 3 over the years and don't really have any complaints about them.  Crossline grips are more durable for me than the UTx and the Z Cord.

Tried both and now UTx is permanently on all my clubs. They last long as well.

Z Cord is harsher on your hands and provides more feedback if that is what you are after.

With UTx i can make full swings without gloves and won't rip the skin. They feel smoother and but enough cord to grip and provide good feedback well. No issues during rainy days as well.
