Why do so many kids stop playing when they start high school

Back when I was in HS I got "disinterested" in golf because it A: wasn't cool, B: I loved surfing glassy waves in the morning, not watching said pumping glass from the golf course on the cliff ( Sand Piper, Montecito CC ), C : I liked to party and the only rudder I had was my p****......

I thinks a lot of kids don't continue in the game because of the cost. The little bit I did play in my late teens through early 20's , my dad payed my green fees. I always had a set of serviceable clubs. I didn't start paying for golf much until I was about 30 and had a job that I made OK money at.

Gaucho checking in... I feel this comment deeply.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Sports is a metaphor, a training ground for greater life skills. It's supposed to be fun & a place where the outcome is really not consequential. We have forgotten that. We forget to tell the kid, "go have fun" and to truly mean it.

Love seeing 12 year olds 'working' on their swing on social media... hate to tell you pops but it ain't work unless you're getting paid.

…Saw a plus cap sophomore who was a legit D1 talent quit to basically stick it to his dad.

My daughter’s swing instructor is not one to blow smoke and he has coached several players that have gone on to play in college. He has been telling me for a couple years that she can play Div 1 golf if she sticks with it. She likes golf a lot but she already know she doesn’t love it enough to put the time in. She’s not as good, yet, at lacrosse but loves it and the friendships she makes playing WITH other girls rather than against them is much more appealing to her.

Specialization.  When you hit HS, no matter what you're doing, you quit doing everything you're not good at.  It takes more time/money/dedication to be good at something in HS.  How many kids are three sport athletes anymore?  Even when I was in HS in the mid-2000's we were pressured to only do one sport in order to do all of that sport's off-season training programs.  None of our golfers played any other sport, and only a couple guys even crossed between football and basketball/wrestling/track.  Baseball was it's own little clique as well.

Here in California every sport goes year round. There just aren’t any breaks per se unless forced by the parents.

I'm hoping to experience this issue in the next couple of years. My two oldest kids didn't seem as interested in it and went in another direction for high school sports (basketball and badminton) and my youngest looks like he wants to get into baseball. Thankfully my third child, bless her heart seems to really like golf so i started her with lessons a couple months ago. i never force sports on any of my kids, if they like it and want to try out i'm all for it, my only caveat is you can't quit once you start. At least finish the season/year and go from there after.

So, i hope #3 plays golf in highschool but if she doesn't that's fine. As long as she has fun while playing i'll always encourage her. i mean really my main goal for trying get them into golf was I just wanted to be able to play with at least one of my them regularly/semi-regularly when they're older

My guess is the kid never really like golf to begin with.  I get having to take time off but if you love something you just don't quit.  They are quitting because they suddenly figure out they can do what they want.

Both of my golfers take time off from golf.  I think it really depends on the kid.  My son has been doing it since freshman year of high school.  He is on break from college and last played in early november.  He says its nice to focus on other things as well.  You can't be golf 100%.  I don't think that means the kids hate golf.

I  Didn't mean short time off like you said.  I was referring to kids who play up until college and then never play golf again. Not even for fun on the side.

If you love something you will find a way to play.

Is this your first day on the internet?

My kid can call me "Pops". Guess what, he's an 18 year old college freshmen. He's not only a boy, he's my kid. Coming from a random keyboard jockey, it somehow does not come across quite the same. I would not call anyone that i did not know "pops". It borders on patronizing and disrespectful. It's tone deaf at best.

I have called people "pops" in both the demeaning sense and as an honorary. I think my daughters call me that in the demeaning sense, at least that is the vibe I get. Hard to tell, because I'm "so out of touch, pops."

Back on topic. I too never force my kids to play a sport. I can tell when my kid is not into it, and if they are not going to try I don't like to watch them. I force them to go to school, get good grades, visit their grandparents, have dinner with the family, etc, but sports, no way.

To get back on topic. How many kids get jobs and rather make money then play golf? If you kid is marginal at golf would you tell them they need to play golf.

Personally I am not sure just working somewhere is always a good thing unless you have a future.  But I do know more than a few parents who insist that their kids learn to work at a job.

The only forcing I ever got was that if I signed up to play on a team, I had to see the season through cause I made a commitment to the other guys.  Once the season was over I didn't have to do it again the next year, but I had to honor my commitment.

Some parents insist their kids work because they need the money.
