Firmer forged irons

bbspeer

Recommended Posts

Looking for recommendations for forged irons to try, as I’ve realized that I prefer “firm” feeling over “soft”. To me, I describe firm as (heavy, solid, pure, dense) as opposed to soft which feels (light, hollow, mushy). Think T100 vs ZX7.

Preferably players CB or MB with a touch of forgiveness.

Although you said you want to move away from Titleist, have you hit the 620s as they pretty much fit the bill for newer released irons (beautiful looking clubs).  Personal opinion, but I've usually found TM CB's to be on the 'firmer' side as well, but haven't played a set since the '14s and only tested some out.

I have and like you said they do fit the bill pretty well. If they weren’t Titleist. Nothing against them I’m just wanting to branch out and try some other OEM’s

Get a set of Maltby TE forged or DBMs. Forged out of 1035. Plenty of forgiveness  and they fit the bill as far as the feel you are after. Price is amazing as well.

If I had a recommendation to make, it would be the P7TW's, or something Miura (TC201,MB101)

I forgot to add the caveat that I’m a lefty 😂 thank you for the suggestions though!

Miura offers the CB-801 or TB-901 for lefties. Went from Srixon to Miura myself and have become obsessed with the dense feeling.

IMO what you're talking about is how the ball feels and sounds at impact.  First, feel and sound depend on the ball profile.  I am 100% feel player that focuses on ball striking.  I like firm impact cause impact vibrations feed up the shaft to my hands, telling me what happened at impact and what the ball is going to do down range.  I don't have to look up to know.  My chosen irons are 620 MB which talk to me.

It sounds like a heavier weighted forged type head is what you want.  However, a touch of forgiveness is a subjective variable.  I leaned golf with older forged MB heads.  If I compare older to newer CAD designed MB heads, my current MB heads are a tad more forgiving, because CAD allowed the designer to create a different internal design.

PS; forgot to mention I have set of 620 CBs that essentially feel and play like 620 MBs, as they were designed to blend with MBs.  They may be worth looking into.

I've not seen many people describe Miura as "soft", I think the best way to describe them would be "solid". Obviously everyone is different, but soft would not be in the conversation of Miura typically.

They are solid, actually heavier than other heads.

Thanks everyone, the i59 and Miura will definitely be added to the top of the demo list. Speaking of which, does anyone know which fitters carry Miura?

I've always found Titleist irons overall to be pretty firm. Which is largely why despite loving the look, I've never been able to game them. And this goes back to the like OG DCI days.

Miura and hogans are the only forged  irons i have really used. I also use a mizuno JPX 919 F GW but not sure it fits your bill.

Hogan is very budget friendly.

That's what I thought too. I love the CBs even more, just slightly thicker top-line gives me more confidence with the 4 & 5 irons.

So many adjectives and descriptors that could easily mean different things to each player.  Started out years ago with Titleist MB blades and CBs which I personally would have described describe as slightly harsh because of the vibration transmitted whether using Project X of TT shafts.  After that phase moved to mostly Mizuno blades and CBs and occasionally Miura CBs.

The Miuras in particular are often more described as “sweet” which many interpret as vibrationless.  When nutted, It’s often like the club head embraces the ball and sends it down range without any harshness being transmitted through the shaft and grip to your hands.   But, different types of shafts and grips will definitely impact such feelings in a significant way, so with both Miuras and Mizunos, shaft selection is critical to achieve the desired feel each of us seeks.
