Anyone still playing irons model year 2yrs or older?

TM Supersteels since 2001.

Why?

1. They are paid for

2. Iron design hasn't changed that much

3. I don't have to worry about scuffing them up

Would I like new irons, such as the Ping G10? You bet. Maybe next year, we will see. For now, I would rather spend my money on lessons, balls, range membership, greens fees, and the latest in driver/fw wood/hybrids which I have already done. These will all have bigger impact on my game.

Dude,

That is one "old-school" WITB !! But I like it...Still have a set of Mizuno MP-14's that I will never part with and still play a few times a year, but being a 14 cap need all the help I can get. Currently rotate a set of Cally Fusions with Nippons (not the wide sole, just the standard ones), a set of X-14's with CW Rifles, and a set of Ping G2"s with CS-Lites.

Tourstage Z101's put them them in the bag 3 years ago and Apex Plus is the backups. Just can't find anything that feels better but the new Pro CM's Mac's are probaly going in the bag mid summer.

Ping I3+s right now.

Been looking at some of the older 'new' clubs. The prices on the 2nd tier OEMs are rock bottom. Nike Ignite or NDS, MacGregors, Wilsons, even Adams.

Its interesting that most of the clubs on here on players clubs. The comment about playing irons for a year to get grooved is compelling. Maybe thats the downside of being a 'ho.

For the time being anyway, still gaming my 962B's, circa 1997. I have a set of Wilson FG-17 heads that I used to use. I want to refurbish and put back in the bag someday, circa 1981.

Ping I3's bought them in 1999, Pings are durable, dont wear out, I like them, they are custom fit, and quite frankley nothing out there today is going to make me play much better. I have replaced the 3 iron with a hybrid, and am looking at a set of I10's, but havent pulled the trigger yet.

Still using the Mac 565's(looking for a backup set as well :) )

I worked my way up from a big box starter set, to clones, then decided I'd go to a demo day to pick out a new set of irons.

went through every booth hitting whatever I could get my hands on, liked the Ping G2's, Nike Pro Combos, and Callaway Fusions(despite the fact that they were way outside my price range). Then I walked down and was hanging around the Macgregor tent, nobody was around, and the rep handed me the 565 7 iron and told me to go to town. I took one swing and I was in love, I could do anything with this iron and it was pretty damn accurate too. I was so impressed I went down the line hitting everything I'd previously hit and went back to the 565's. I remember my heart being absolutely crushed when I found out the price was far more then I could hope to spend on them.

A year later I was poking around the Golf shop, when I spied a set of 565's with 5.5 shafts and a clearance tag on them. I called the wife and after 10-20 minutes of pleading, cajoling, and begging, they were mine.

They're not leaving the bag anytime soon ;)

No reason to switch from the 735's IMO - a lot of their Tour staff is still playing them. You have to remember that most of the changes in irons are mainly cosmetic and offer very little (if any) improvement in performance. If you don't believe me, pick up a set of old Eye 2 or ISI irons on eBay for $150 and give them a try. In fact, I am still playing a set of copper Eye 2's that were made in the late 80's. My back up set is a set of Hogan Apex 99's. My driver and fw metals are all 2-3 years old and doing fine, too. Oh yeah, you might be interested to know that I used to work in the golf business and still have enough connections to get new equipment at little or no cost.

I'm a firm believer that iron technology hasn't changed much in the past 5-10 years. I just put some 2 year old Hogan Apex Edge's in the bag. They replaced a great set of Ping ISI's. The Hogans are the perfect blend of forgiveness and classic looks. And since they were a 2006 model, they were dirt cheap in practically new condition.

I demo a lot of equipment for fun, but it seems like irons are pretty much the same year after year.

Cleveland Ta2's, look just like the new CG reds but feel way better

Ditto on the TA2's but for some reason my fingers are starting to hurt on the back nine. For that reason only I am now looking for a cb/blade that has soft impact. Maybe the Cg reds.

I play Callaway X-18 irons that I purchased two summers ago. Why haven't I changed? First, I still like the clubs and second and most importantly, I don't think spending $800 on a new set would improve my game. My understanding is that golfers tend to change drivers annually, but will keep a set of irons for closer to 5 years, but it doesn't sound like that is the case for most of the golfwrxers.
