Mizuno 223 Reviews

Trying to decide between:

1.) re-ordering another set of Gen 3s - seems to be what I compare everything against and I stupidly sold off.

2.) ordering a mixed set of the p’s and t’s in the Gen 5 - doesn’t sound like there is much difference but I like the black finish (although I’m wondering how well it will wear).

3.) Going with the Mizzy 223s. These seem to be loved and forgiving.

I haven’t had a chance to hit the 223s yet and live in the middle of nowhere, so I’ll have to order them without trying, then wait 8 weeks to get them. The other problem is I loved the long irons in the Gen 3s. That turned long irons into a strength rather than a liability. Lastly, Ping is going to be replacing the i210s this summer and the good Lord knows I’ll be interested in those……. Life of a ho I guess.

Just ordered a Set 4-PW PX 6.0’s was shocked how forgiving these were in my fitting, they weren’t in my radar to begin with, my mis hits compared to pure strikes were around 7-8 yards. I’m taller at 6’4 so i needed a half inch and that combo’d with the B heads they produce is so money. Other brands it felt a lot heavier and out of wack with the longer length. Also nothing beats a pure strike with these. Pure Butter 🧈🧈🧈

these 6-8 weeks are going to feel like years

What are thoughts with 225 in the 4 and 5 and 223 in 6 thru PW? That's what I ordered.  Mistake?

Currently, play Mizuno MP4 in 7 thru wedge with 585 in the 5 and 4.

Mistake? Depends on your game. You may want to weaken the 225 by one degree to get more spin. The 223 spins more, very green friendly. The 225 may not seem a like a spinner on a monitor, but real world, it gets up in the air.  I have no issues with the 223 in the 5i as to forgiveness. If you want some insurance on forgiveness, many like the 225. No one can answer that question but you.

I hit the PW a comfortable 130-135, but the same swing with GW is 110, maybe 115 at the top end for me. If I were 120 out I’d love to use GW but would definitely pull PW and take some off.

Exact same thing happening to me. Thinking about getting the GW bent 1° stronger.

Only have 27 holes on my 223s with Modus 115, but have to say I like them. I’ve been out a number of times this winter, I mean spring. Rain, highs of mid 40s and soaking wet Conditions. I wasn’t too concerned with the carry due to the conditions and 3-4 layers, but played 9 last week, sunny, 75* and dry conditions. These did perform, if anything I was taken back by the increase in distance , coming from a set of 785 and p770s. These played a 1/2-1 club longer.

Got several rounds with these with LZ 6.0 they are a nice controlled flight. Haven’t had much of flyer’s. Not loosing much carry with strikes on the toe and a groove low. Overall enjoying them just getting used to the new weight and distances.
sorry not a super in depth review but just my few thoughts

I’ve had a set of 223s. My previous irons were 2nd gen p790s which I have used for about a year.

Im only about 5 yards shorter per club with the 223s which I think is saying something. The lofts are weaker with the 223, but I wouldn’t give up the extra spin that Im getting.

Obviously the feel and control are much better with the 223s. I’m I’m impressed so far.

My impressions of the 223 is it is very very similar to zx7s. Crazy good feel, a bit bigger profile overall. I wasnt crazy about the jumpiness of the mid irons in my testing but i totally get why the zx7 and 223s are wildly popular with the bulk of the bell curve of golfers.

I did a fitting and it came down to the ZX7's and 223's as well. Ultimately went with the 223's but it could've gone either way. I'm coming from the PXG Gen4's and I've hit more GIR and first two rounds were in the 70's. Went to the new PXG store and tested them against the Gen 5's, still liked the 223's better. The only iron that came close to replacing them was the Gen 4 0311 ST's.

I have a combo set of 225 (5-7) and 223 (8-GW).  Really like the 223 (all with Project X LZ 5.5) but on the fence with 225.   Turf interaction with 223 is great but everything with 225 is a low push.  All playing +1/4", same SW and 2 degrees upright.   Anyone had a similar experience??

I originally had 5-PW 225s and just did not get on with them at all.   Really disliked the short irons.  And that was coming from 919 Hot Metal Pros.  Just could not get consistent contact and thought the feel was nothing special.  On a whim I tried the 223s and loved the way they cut through the turf and the feel was way better than 225.  Have been playing them for a few weeks now.  I have owned pretty much every Mizuno iron at some stage and these are up there with the very best.

Also the 223 5-7 irons are very forgiving and a bit hot faced.  They are at least as forgiving as the JPX Forged line and way better feeling.  I'd just order them in 5-7 and swap out the 225s..

My progression went JPX 825 Pro, JPX HMP, Apex TCB, 223 over the last 4-5 years.  I think the 223s are probably the best blend of all of my previous sets.

They're very similar size wise (to my eye) to the TCB.  Just a touch bigger and slightly more offset.  Feel is better than both JPX sets and I prefer the softer feel of the short irons to the firmer TCB.   Performance has been great so far.  I  used to get big fliers with the HMP especially in shorter irons which is what prompted the switch but haven't had a jumper yet from the 223s.  And I'm getting the forgiveness in longer irons that I lost with the TCBs - especially out on the toe.

223 was a step back from the MP 20 MMC for me. Overall size and sole width has increased to where the MP 18 MMC for was, which is fine if it suits your eye. MP 20 MMC filled in a profile much closer to the MP 18 SC. I think the MP 20 MMC also had better feel throughout the set too. Going with t100 irons this year.

As an aside to my 223 post - we had a Mizuno Demo Day at our club over the weekend.  My current config is Modus 105 stiff at +1/2".   I wanted to hit the Modus 115s to see the comparison.   Really liked the 115 stiff and then the fitter handed me 115X and that was perfect.  Much better balance.  I have traditionally played 105X and the current set is a bit of an experiment.   Fitter liked the 115 stability, launch and dispersion better.  So now I need to find another set 🙂

One other thing - just for sh$ts and giggles I asked to try the 221 7 iron.  That club is just freaking beautiful and I hit it well, if quite a bit higher than the 223 but I am under no illusions as to how reliable that would be on the course!

Lmk if you are getting rid of the 105 stiff + 1/2"  that's my fit.

My index has dropped to the lowest it has been in over 10 years since bagging the 223's and I'm only about a half stroke away from being the lowest index I have ever been. For me, these are the perfect combination of looks, perfomance and feel. Are there better looking irons out there? Yes. Are there better feeling irons out there? Yes. But for me, they do everything very well.

My only complaint is that they might go too far. I had this same issue with ZX7's and had them bent a degree weak which helped. I haven't had any issues with peak height or lack of spin so no concerns there. I am used to playing a 34 degree 7 iron so I just need to adjust but I hate flying a green. I caught a nasty downwind flyer on the first hole yesterday which lead to a double. Obviously, not the clubs fault but I need to adjust to the extra length and playing conditions.

I can honestly say that I can't remember ever playing an iron where nearly all of my misses are around pin high like these have been.

Absolutely LOVE the 223's. Great ball flight and distance is perfect! Love the playability and feel is amazing! My only compliant is (OCD) is the modus logo on the shafts are not straight (in line with the hozel).

Tried the 223s over the weekend and I was impressed. Currently play PING G425s with DG105 stiff but I tried modus 120 stiff, felt great and I was hitting all of them straight, right in the middle of the face. Also, tried I525s in the DG105 stiff, felt great, very forgiving but not as consistent as the 223s for me. P790s I could not hit well like the other two. Is it just me or are the 225s really a little chunkier than 223s?

I had this experience with the 225 GW, which is no longer in my bag. It was fine around the greens, but it went nowhere on fuller swings, and launched to the moon. Very weird.

love the 225 for what it is. IMO best hollow body iron out there. I also have another set of T100, and I think I prefer it to the 223 coz of the shape and profile. 223 felt great though. Slightly longer than T100 too.

which is more forgiving, 223 or t100? which is bigger headsize?
