*Graphite Design Lovers Anonymous* Tour AD UB vs IZ vs XC and NOW vs TP! ...and HD....and VR

Recommended Posts

Well due to this thread I picked up a tour ad tp 7tx and popped it in my g430 lst 9 degree head. Had my highest ball speed of 186 today. Really enjoyed it and my flight was a little lower than the iz. I’m going to put the 8tx IZ in my 4 wood, should give me nice high launch.  I ordered a heavier weight to play around with swing weight in the driver but so far loving it.

I'm doing a "build a beast" forgiveness edition right now with a Ping G425 LST.  The shaft I decided to stick in it is the Tour AD TP 7TX.  Not many people on here talk about it like they talk about others, but I have absolutely fallen in love with this thing.  Tons of feel and maybe the most stable 70 gram shaft I've ever swung.  My main driver all last year was the Rogue ST TD with a Ventus Black and it was just OK for me.  I know the 425 is playing into the stability quite a bit, but man is the TP nice.

Does anyone else have love for the TP?  Or hate.  I'd like to hear anything, because folks just don't talk about it that much.

Holy crap.  I literally just posted about the TP and how nobody talks about it, then you post this. lol

I tried the 430 at my club and I needed to loft up to 10* from the 9 in my 425.  Did you need to loft up from your normal with the TP?  Do you feel like the TP is super stable, or is it just me?

I really enjoyed it, I like heavier swing weights so struggled a bit with tempo it’s sitting at d4. When the teapo was on I loved it. I was surprised at stability of it. I have played a Ventus the last two years and I felt it was just as good.

Mine is D4 as well, which is my sweet spot.  I've played the V Black and feel the same.  I'm glad it's not just me thinking it.  I actually ordered a lighter weight for the rear, so I can add some hotmelt for sound deadening without increasing the swing weight.  Thanks for chiming in on this!  This thread and @third-times-a-charm has me buying GD shafts right and left!

Anyone ever use the AD MJ in a fairway wood? I’m eyeing one for either a 5 wood or my existing Callaway UW

I had an MJ 70S in a 4W for a while, and could still go back to it.  Launch was good - not too high, but not low bullets either.   Pretty easy to hit off the deck.

I've sold some of my GD inventory, and will be putting a few more up on BST.  But the MJ in my garage will wind up in my backup bag at Dad's house. Its solid.

@minhjn, yes but most of my GD exposure has been in driver.  And keep in mind that many GD shafts dont work for me - they turn over too much.  DI, TP and VR are on that list.   I've never hit IZ but probably should test one.

That being said...

XC and BB have stiffer mids, but not by much.  GP feels very similar to MJ, but GP has stiffer tip.  TP was also close - and I really wanted TP to work, but the lefts came into play.

Speaking of the GP I really think it was ahead of its time and is a bigtime 'OG' shaft that doesnt get love because it was passed over when it came out due to the turquoise color scheme. The black edition wasnt until some years later IIRC.

I have it in both my driver and 3W right now and the stiff tip is very ventus-esque but with IMO more feel than the ventus lines due to their higher butt stiffness.

I just had the greatest 3W fairway shot of my life this weekend - hitting the Par 5 12th here in two shots and within 15ft of the pin setting up an eagle try - with the GP 7 in my 3W. Such a nice shaft that really isnt low spin (just lower relative to other GD models).

Not to mention they can be had cheap!

@third-times-a-charm, the GP 6X in my garage is one of the shafts I won't sell.  Could easily go back to it.

Been playing the DI in my fairway wood for a while and am at my breaking point with it. I cannot for the life of me time it correctly when I'm going after it. I've played the XC in the driver on and off quite a bit and love the feel of it, but don't want to lower the flight on my 3 wood. Anyone have any ideas which shaft would give me higher flight than the XC with similar feel and that works well with someone who has a pretty quick transition?

nice thanks for the insight. I think a softer tipped GT would go good in a fairway wood

TP is still one of the best. Definitely my favorite Tour AD shaft. Have a 6TX and a 8X that always find their way back into the bag. Fairly similar to Ventus Blue TR. Mid launch, low spin, stable with great feel. The 8X will be going into an Apex UW soon. People have no idea how stiff those 7TX shafts are.

Agree with this.  Gamed an XC 7X for a while in my driver, could easily go back to it.  Found a 6TX on the 'bay, but it only works when I stand on it.   Will be putting the 6TX up on BST at some point...

Most hated shaft on this thread (including by me at many points). Just can’t seem to quit it. Goes longer than anything else I try, albeit not always straight.

Ive hated it so far in driver but ngl if I find a UB 7 or UB 8 on ebay for under $120 I'm gonna snatch it up and do some fairway testing.

Funny, I love the UB - got fit into it at a Titleist fitting and it's been great in my fairway wood, although I ultimately kept my AF in the driver. I'd pick one up for the driver if I find a deal on one.

Seeking the collective wisdom

of this thread.

LOVE the DI 75 and DI 85 in my hybrids.

Currently have a MCA TB 50 SR in my driver, hit it very straight, great feel.

Looking for a GD option with a lower launch/spin profile compared to the TB, while maintaining that lovely Blueboard type feel.

Thanks.
