Ping 2023 Putters-anyone gaming?

I recently did a putter fitting -- the goal was to get my specs for future putters, since I buy and try clubs like a true WRXer. We settled on me needing a wide blade with a plumber's neck/similar neck and a rear site line (like a Tri-Hot 5K Double Wide, Bettinardi BB8W, etc.). Got length/loft/lie too. 

 

They didn't have the Ping Anser 2D there to try, though. Plus, I'm a lefty, and unfortunately most places have relatively few options for us actually there in person. 

 

I love the way it looks, the 35* toe hang is in line with what I was fitted for, all the specs can be ordered to what I was fitted for ... seems like one I'm gonna end up buying and trying. Just wanted to hear a little more from you all first. How does the insert compare to something like Odyssey's White Hot insert? Any other comparison you all would make to similar style putters?

As far as shape is concerned, the 2D flange width is 1-7/16” compared to 1-1/8” on my original Anser2 SS.  As for the insert, I find it just a bit firmer than the Odyssey White Hot.

The Kushin 4 is the most consistent putter I have used in a long time and I have tried many….no more big mallets for me. The speed/feel/roll are very consistent.

The Anser 2D is calling my name. Need to go roll it this weekend. If the insert is indeed a bit firmer than the White Hot then it will likely be coming home with me.

I think it’s a touch firmer than the white hot.  The shape is fantastic.  Wish they offered it in a single bend shaft similar to betti ss28.  Because the shape is not quite as large and it looks so damn good behind the ball.

I agree the 2D is firmer.  Still wish it was milled. But man this putter just feels awesome aesthetically, weight, flow etc.

What's your thoughts on longer range putts / lag putts? How is the feel/feedback on those? I was able to test one out at the shop and really enjoyed it but was only able to putt a maximum of 6-7 feet.

Grabbed the 2D yesterday during some sales. Could only get it about an inch over what i prefer. Took it out (overlength to trial) and it's a great putter. Would have preferred milled (i guess) but the insert is great. Bit of a tock off the face but nothing dramatic for me. Whether it's the color or actual size it looks amazing behind the ball and "seemed" notably more compact than the SB2 i had looked at a week earlier. It really stood out on long lag putts. 

 

Shortened it an inch yesterday as it's passed the test and look forward to gaming it next week. 

 

Cover is awesome.

I just got one Friday, too -- a 2D I'd ordered in my specs (green dot, +2 loft, 33"). I have a Tri-Hot 5K Double Wide in the same specs on the way as well, and I'll be doing a comparison. But so far, I love the 2D. It's not as soft as the Tri-Hot (which I think is a good thing). Looks gorgeous at address. I do wish it'd just been milled, but the insert isn't bad and isn't visible or anything at address.

Tried the Kushin 4, Tyne 4, and Anser in the store. I loved the look of the Kushin 4 (looks like I’m not the only one), but just wish that amount of toe hang suited my stroke. Something about the Anser looked slightly off to me, like the face sat a little open. I’m not sure if the one they had was no good or it’s something about the silver/black contrasting lines, plus the flange line.

If the 2D wasn’t an insert putter and had the shallow milling, it would basically be the PLD putter I’d design. I’ve putter with it over and over again and it’s just too soft. I may end up with one anyway though.

Recently picked up a tomcat 14 just to try something different, usually play a Scotty phantom X 5.5.

 

Got a good deal on a stability fire shaft so installed that and have played a few rounds with it.

 

It's a nice looking putter the finish is excellent, I like the alignment dots feels nice off the face. One thing I don't like is it won't sit square due to the sole shape it wants to lay back and open kind of have to hold it square with your hands at address.

 

I'm not sold on it yet I actually keep leaving putts short which is strange as it's alot heavier and has no face milling compared to my Scotty.

 

Just to note I really like the stability shaft it feels great actually makes the putter feel softer compared to the steal shaft and it looks great too.

I sent it back after a 45 minute session on the practice green. Milled and it be in the bag. I had to kill it on anything over 25 feet.

So after a few rounds with the Kushin, I can report it rolls great. Feel reminds me of the face from the first Knome generation and probably similar to other milled faces of that era. Kind of like a firm “Pop” feel but with just a little bit give behind it.

 

My only complaint is a big one though. The black paint chips very easily. I take meticulous care of my putters and always keep the cover on unless I am on the green. 
 

It’s staying in the bag though and I’ll probably just cover the small chips with a sharpie since it is more of a flat black to avoid distraction.

 

FYI, this punted my custom ER8v out of the bag but I think I was going back to M Craft I anyway before this purchase. 8882 will always be there to pick up the pieces if need be. Funny my cheapest putter is the Ace in the hole/Tourney putter. ER8v is up on the Bay. Didn’t get along with it. 
 

Here are some pics of the ER8v that I am moving from to give you am idea how similar the two are and the fact it didn’t work for me. It was custom.

Shows how personal putting is. My Anser 2D is the best lag putting beast I've ever had. Well it's great from all ranges for me. My expectations have been exceeded and this thing is welded into the bag.

31 putts today on course. The telling part is yesterday’s greens were pretty slow and today’s were fairly fast and I got the feel down very quickly!! The feel of the milled face is fantastic. Having had Scotty’s Toulon, M Craft, EvnRoll and Betti’s, this face may not be as fancy, but there is just something about it that feels good.

 

Pretty much getting the same numbers as my trusty 8802 style 8882 putter. This is the first putter I have had that has been able to produce outside of that putter. Probably tried between 15 to 20 different putters to have an alternative. I feel pretty safe saying mission accomplished now. Should hold me off for a year or two, maybe.

I noticed that the 2D insert is the same material as the Sigma 2 insert.

Anyone know if the Tyne 4 has any construction changes that affect moi, or is it just a solid SS block with some face milling? Is that black paint any more durable than last release? I wonder if there is a way to easily strip it to match the top line.

On the Ping site looks like a solid block of 304SS milled based on the info. The others state if tungsten plugs are used, etc. 

 

Second part I don't know but a bead blast probably strips it.

I have gamed the 2023 Shea putter. Very solid and consistent, looks great at set up and I really like the feel. My usual is a vault 2.0 anser, and I didnt feel I had to adjust much at all to the new look and feel.

Still waiting for my Anser 2D to come in. I ordered it with the i230s and 4.0 wedges so not sure if those are holding anything up or not. I also ordered everything right before the Holidays so likely some delays from some time off. Eager to get this in my hands!

My 2D arrived yesterday. She's a beauty. Can't wait to get it out on some real greens this Spring.
