Some are picking obscure bands/groups that might be good but have a very limited catalogue. If I'm going to listen to only 5 bands for the rest of my days, they damn well better have a huge catalogue.

This is a really hard question, but I think the above covers enough, and the artists have large enough bodies of work, that I'd be OK.  My problem is I have such broad musical tastes -- I equally love opera, Wu Tang, and Alan Jackson.  How do I begin to narrow that down?

14-15 years ago, I did a form of this, but it was just one artist, and just for my time driving.  My car at the time came with a CD player that also played MP3s.  I owned most of Iron Maiden's studio releases from Iron Maiden through their then-most-recent, A Matter of Life and Death; only missing Virtual XI and Dance of Death.

 

I made an MP3 CD of everything I had available (skipping X Factor), and played it on a continuous loop in the car (103 songs).  Ran like that for months at a time over quite a few years.

Why can't we listen to his music? Roman Polanski raped a little girl and fled America and he still won Oscars and makes movies and has people in Hollywood arguing he should be allowed to come back. There are other examples of "artists" who have done worse stuff than Ryan Adams but we still celebrate. 

 

(I'm agnostic on Ryan Adams behavior and all that controversy surrounding him. He never "raped" anyone to my knowledge. He was just a crappy dude to some of the women around him - I just enjoy his music)
