Hmm, puppetmaster is correct. The sole

is slightly different than the previous V-grind. The leading edge seems to be sharper in the newer iteration which I’m not crazy about. Attached are some pics of mine with the original and the T-grind that I found to be the closest to the original but a little more difficult out of the bunker.

Yeah I can’t say I love the 2023 V so far but it’s still early. It just seems clumsy, for lack of better words. The old V seems cleaner through the turf and sand.

Anyway, more pictures of the two…

Grind seems similar to a M grind, but with more bounce on the back of the grind. Makes sense why it may feel clumsy in anything but softer conditions.

Yup that’s about right, which is why it’s disappointing because I thought this was going to be an updated version of the original V grind.

You would think a V grind is a V grind, but obviously they changed it without telling anyone. WW has a 90 day playability guarantee right??? 😉. That sucks, but bst to the rescue, I’m sure somebody will take it off your hands.

Lol well the book ends of the season here in VA usually bring soft conditions so it might still come in handy. Maybe I just need to put an Axiom into it 😅

Ok had a pretty good round with the V today so it is trending in the right direction at least. Still can’t put my finger on it but def plays a little different than the original - maybe more of a sliding feel because of the wider sole. Don’t worry, I’m not gonna post after every round 😅

And yeah, that raw rusts quick, for anyone who cares.

It has rained here for the past 5 days so the course should be much softer than it has been. I'm going to give the V another shot today in softer conditions to see if it's better.

It is missing the heel grind... Grind it add lead and let it rip... The heel grind makes it much smoother through the turf when face is open...

I have both of the previous V grind's.

Just one man's opinion but I think you are correct, M grind works as a substitute.  I am playing an M grind bent to 58/10 right now instead of the V's.

The V grind opens up better than the M for true flop shots, but the M is better off tight lies.  Both are fairly versatile.

FWIW I like the original V grind from '06 (or whatever year it was) better than the updated one from 2015/16.

@Puppetmaster

Called it here, in bold...  The 15/16 isn't a copy of the original that you have, they changed it. The new one looks more like the 15/16 model to me, although not exactly the same... Maybe less heel relief.

I don't use my 15/16 model.  Plays too much like an M, so I use my M. I bought a T to mess around with.  Lower bounce, but sets up way more like my original V.

I don't practice as much as I used to, so this is the only open face I like these days...

https://palatablepastime.com/2014/12/05/manhattan-hot-shot-sandwich/

But seriously, the square faced shots I hit were great in mostly dry, firm conditions. Hit one shot out of the bunker with an open face, which was just fine, but not enough to go by.

Played raw M grind in 60 lob wedge for many years followed by LBK since 2020. I found LBK to be terrific and next level good in green side bunkers.

Gave the new V grind a go this past week just to try. Courses and the conditioning I play are generally excellent with tightly mowed fairways and hard fast bent greens. We do however still get mostly damp fairway conditions in SW CT and found LBK cud dig a bit for me.

After couple rounds this V grind is frkin magical and just the club for conditions here.

The 15/16 model I have is almost perfect in my book. Great square. Great open. Usable for any shot I can hit. Have played hard , soft , tight , rough. Seems almost perfect. This new one doesn’t look as good to me. But I’m a lefty so it didn’t end up mattering. I wanted one for the closet when this one is done. If I had not taken two years off in 18-19 then it would be done already but it’s still in prime shape. Would love to be able to just order a copy of this one somehow.

Glad you like it.  It's not the same as the original, which I prefer.  Original opens up better and has a sharper leading edge.

What did you find?

Much much better in softer conditions. I can see this becoming my fall/winter/early spring wedge. For the summer months when it's firm it's still a shootout between my 60T and 60A .

IMO I feel like I wasted $350 on the V Grind. I see no discernible difference between the V and M.

It’s a grind with VERY low bounce (4 degrees) that is intended for firm tight lies. Aaron Dill was the one who brought it to life is my understanding.

Got my V grind in yesterday and it looks amazing. BUt was suffering my typical buyers remorse so didn't take it to the range. Then I found out that my wife has bought we a wedge fitting at Artisan for my 40th! That's something I've always wanted to do; anyone looking to pick up a 60* V grind let me know!

Is the v grind basically an m grind with more heel relief? Currently playing the M and I like it for its versatility but wouldn’t mind the ability to open it up more off tight lies.

Not really. The forward bounce surfaces of the V and T grinds are narrow, which means the bounce doesn't increase much when they are layed open.  The L,  M and D grinds have wider bounce surfaces, so they add more bounce when layed open.  If you want to open a wedge off tight lies, and keep the leading edge low, you want the T grind.

I just ordered the V-grind.

Used to be an M-grind player and loved the versatility, it was so easy to open up but simply wasn’t forgiving enough for the wet/soggy Midwest – needed more bounce.  Also was tricky out of soft sand bunkers.

Of late, have the D-grind in play and it has been wonderful.  Automatic out of bunkers and much more forgiving in the soft conditions I play.  It is fairly versatile with the crescent sole – however – if the ball is sitting down at all in the rough greenside, I have a difficult time opening up for a rescue flop shot.  70% it is ok, but when you need to get the leading edge really low it can limit you there.  It’s a small % of shots, but I feel like the whole point of carrying a 60 is to pull off the miracle short sided flops from time to time.

That takes me to the V-grind.  I’m hopeful it is a nice blend of the M-grind and D-grind due to what I describe above.  Am I way off here and did I just waste $300 on a wedge or do you think I’m on the right track?
