Do you have any extremely quirky equipment preferences?

I like to play with a fresh ball, no carryover from last round. Most of the time it’s not by choice.

I'll only use one kind of tee. PTS Blue 3 1/4".

I like this.  I'm moving away from plastic tees and planning on playing natural wood or bamboo 3 1/4" tees starting next year.

Definitely. I'm just not a fan of plastic tees. I don't like the prongs on them, either. I use PTS because of the demarcation stripes. It allows me to get the exact tee height that I prefer every time. Whether it be driver, hybrid or iron off the tee. I love the consistency, and it's simple and fast.

Not sure if my preference is extremely quirky... but from driver all the way to my lob wedge has a golfworks rib installed on top (it sits more or less in the V of my left hand when i hold the club)... and not only that but ALL the grips are Bestgrip Microperf are installed upside down  too as they have a 'stitchback' - so the stitching is also on top.

My putters on the other hand are now all converted to round  Edel grips. 😳 (including change over my LAB DF2.1... heresy!)

Grips: Midsize plus 3 wraps (been doing it for almost 10 years, got up to midsize plus 6 wraps at one point); standard grips feel so weird, I hate demoing clubs at this point cause of it

Irons: I play .25 inch intervals and 3* upright (PW 36.25" and 4 iron 37.75"); I also play irons that are over 10 years old, I could get a new set, but will probably keep the same length and lie

Wedges: all of my wedges are 36 inches and 3* upright

Ball: I don't notice any real difference from a ProV1 to ProV1x ... I honestly play both, tournament though I am playing the x

We could trade irons and wedges and we’d both be exact fits !  Even the grips.

Kind of OCD about having a non-OCD Frankensteined WITB.

A new need to spray paint things including color blocks on my putters.

Removing shaft taper under grips using calipers, not going by number of wraps.

Ignoring trying to dial in swingweight numbers on my clubs despite creating a swingweight calculator.

I'm a lefty blade haha

how did you end up playing 'similar' length irons

I started playing this setup in 2018, played them til 2021

4 - 5 iron 38 inches

6 to 8 37 inches

9 to GW 36 inches

then some shafts broke from wear (graphite)

Went to a hybrid/utility iron combo set for a year in 2021,

Then went to .25 inch intervals in 2022 and will never change

My logic was to have a similar feel to single length but get the ball

flight down in the short irons and easier distance and height in the

long irons

would like to try at some point the following (not that big of difference)

60*, 54*, 48* - 36.5" (drill out some weight in the bottom of the wedge to stop ballooning)

44*, 40* - 36.75"

36*, 32*, 28* - 37"

24* - 37.25"

20* - 37.5" (super game improvement iron, to help with launch, maybe a slightly lighter shaft)

all 3* degrees upright

Well. Ya got me there.  😂

for me it came from being tall and not being able to reach the ball with a wedge.  I just experimented until it felt right , and then eventually decided that it made sense to play my wedges same length. I can choke down on the lob for touch shots around the green . Or I can hit it full to fill the gap to sand wedge.  It’s all feel and options.  The 1/4 inch gaps came because I noticed too tyat I had no issue hitting standard length long irons. In fact I could smoke them but not a 7 down.  Why ?  Too short. So it made common sense to lengthen the lob up to the 6 at least.  The only  way to do it and not make a 3 iron that’s 42 inches long is to make the steps smaller. So I did.  And found out it gapped great.

I'm definitely a fan of atypical rib placement for personal preference reasons. I accidentally discovered that when I installed a ribbed grip slightly crooked only to find it sat perfectly in the first knuckle crease of my left index finger (vardon grip), now everything is around installed around 11 o'clock thanks to that happy accident.

Amen to that, digital calipers have been a godsend. If a typical shaft taper under the grip is something like .600" -> .580" then i'm always seeking to flip that while building up with a rough target of .640" -> .665" which with thick buildup tape is normally a +3/+5 wraps kind of situation. This is why I appreciate Fujikura and the fact they are deliberately consistent in controlling their handle diameters. Building up something like an Aldila Rogue Black/Silver TX is wild with their measurements often being something around .650" -> .560" where to get the same size as the +3/+5 setup becomes an incremental stagger down the shaft from no wraps at the top to like +7 at the bottom. That's why whenever I get the "why don't you just use midsize grips?" question i'm like...

angry greys anatomy GIF

This obviously betrays by quirky equipment preference in that I become increasingly neurotic about my grip size/taper the "faster" the club is. Shorter clubs just need to be in the ballpark, but once I get up to driving irons and fairway woods I start nitpicking down to the point where i'll pull a grip just to extend a single wrap of tape by a couple inches. This is compounded by the aforementioned inconsistencies in handle taper in graphite shafts AND the fact that I of course fell in love with a discontinued and now very hard to come by grip for those clubs because golf isn't cruel enough alone. 😆

So I'm maybe half as neurotic as you about grips 🤣.  But yeah it's one of those lack of standards where people put "specs" on top of it... Like "I'm a +3 wraps on the bottom hand guy" when there are all these different butt diameters, tapers, and steps.  It's similar to club lengths, like saying "my length spec is +1/4 inch" when there are no standard lengths and there are all these different measuring methods.  Non absolute number "specs" in the golf world drive me nutty.  Sorry end of rant. Lol

1.   Tend to swap out most of my equipment each year (even though I tend to come back to stuff that I have played in the past)

2.  Tend to play 11-12 clubs.  Will only put clubs in bag that I'm confident that I cant hit well regularily.  Could be that I'm cheap as well and see #1

3.  Constantly tinkering with grip size and loft/lie.  dont know why as most clubs dont last long.  see#1

4.  Always say this will be the year that i dont swap equipment. see #1

I’m coming to the conclusion that I like the length of my irons to be a touch longer and my driver and fairways to be a bit shorter than “standard”.

I like my 3 Vokey wedges to all be D5 swing weight.

After reading some of the other posts about tees, the reality has set in that I have a similar issue, I only use the 2 1/8 inch wooden tees. And I use the broken ones when hitting an iron from the tee.

I play left handed and apparently not everything is made in lefty. 🤣

<edit> it's quirky because I'm actually right handed. I golf left because I feel more comfortable on that side of the ball from surfing and skateboarding goofy foot (right foot forward).

I also bat lefty because you are closer to first base. But that doesn't require special hardware.

I prefer to play with a ball that I have already hit around: not scuffed, but one that is game worn a tad.

This way I never have to wave goodbye to it over the fescue saying $@#! that was a brand new ball...

So how do you get a ball slightly used if you never play a new ball?  (just messing around with you)
