New Ping S159 wedges - #2

Recommended Posts

Tried the new ping wedges next to the new sm10s. Both were good. I felt the pings had a little softer smoother feel than the new vokeys. Both were great though. I’ll be picking up the pings when I get some new wedges.

I also just got done hitting the Ping S159 and SM10.  I would agree that the Pings did feel a tad softer, but the Vokey felt a little more solid.  Tried the S & H on the Ping 54 and the H on the 58.  The S & D on the Vokey 54 and the D & M on the 58.  Hit with both finishes on the Pings and the TC and Nickel on the Vokey.  Both Chrome finishes  on very nice.  The Nickel on the Vokey is very sharp looking.  Just wonder how it will hold up.  The Brushed Steel was terrible.  Was really hoping the Midnight on the Ping would be the one, but for me was a little disappointed.  Love the look of the whole wedge except the face.  It's a different shade, wished they kept it the same as the rest of the wedge.  Actually looked like the face was the same shade whether it was the Chrome or Midnight.  The Vokey Nickel's face is basically the same shade as the whole face.  Much nicer looking down for me.  The other thing to note.  All the wedges were brand new demo's first time hit with cold range balls unfortunately , of mats.  At the end of the session the Vokey's cleaned up real well with basically no wear marks on the grooves, the Ping's showed much more ball markings and scrapes on them.  Maybe the faces are softer and that is why they felt a little softer.  As far as performance, I got along very well with the Ping 54S & 58H, and the Vokey 54D & 58M.  Honestly could play either, just have to make a decision.  If I go Chrome, might lean Ping, darker finish (Nickel), might lean Vokey.

Two quality wedges for sure

Usually the ball marks on the face of the wedge are from a rougher face/groves basically grabbing the ball to create spin. Potentially increasing spin easier. The mg4s eats balls cause of the way the new grooves are. Just depends on the ball cover and the groove style. I felt both faces and the ping had more of a sandpaper type feel believe with the hydro blast or whatever it is they do to it.

The Ping wedge fitting app thing and its grind suggestions, is that meant to be best fitting grind for all wedges?

Seems to be focused mainly on the highest lofted wedge, and leaves me guessing what I might want for my 54* is how I personally feel after going through it.

Funny thing is though, it suggested the two grinds I thought I'd be best fitted to; E and T (depending on what I select as my main concern).

So I can't decide, was thinking a 54* H and then both the E and T 58s to try them both out. But it's suggesting B grind as my secondary.

Any suggestions? Apart from go get fit/ test them out, which I will if I can.

EDIT: Okay after playing around some more, and trying to give it what I might want from a 54*, it suggests H grind, so I think that could be a good option.

That could be a great setup!

I wonder if I can lose a club in the bag 🤔

I know I want S-grind in 50 and 54. But I'm really torn between the 58-H and the 58-B.

I like to open the face slightly around the greens sometimes, but how often do I really need the big open face flop shot? Once every couple rounds? Really wondering if I should just get the B grind and see if it works great 99% of the time.

Agree that if you don’t open the face much, would prioritize other areas of wedge play. Especially if you play in soft conditions, you can probably open the B enough for your needs.

Guessing the B will be a little more versatile out of the bunker since you can add or remove bounce with the sole by how much you open the face. The other thing I would consider is how much bounce you need on square shots, more so distance wedge shots. Welcome other thoughts there, not really sure how they’d compare.

This is the same situation I’m in. I ended up ordering both the H and B but I ordered in the 60*. My thought process was that a 60 would allow for that additional height without having to hit super high flops. As greens continue to get harder and faster, I find myself having to use height rather than spin to stop the ball in the right areas of the green.

I'm not sure if many people here share the same opinion as I, but to me the T grind, when opened up, provides a lot of effective bounce. I was personally thinking for myself having something like a 48S (bent to 49) paired with a 54H and a 58T (bent to 59). The bending of that T grind to offer just a touch more bounce on standard shots would be nice, but I find when opening that T grind up, you'd be surprised by how much that bounce actually sticks out. The only issue is that the sole is not that wide, so I guess this is where the H bridges the gap, of a touch wider sole width, with a little more standard added bounce than the T grind.

Anyways, I love hearing everyones thoughts and tinkering with my hypothetical wedge setup in my head... so keep the ideas flowing!

Flush, do you mean that the leading edge sits high? Unfortunately with Ping I think T is as good as it’s gonna get in that regard. I bet we couldn’t count on one hand the number of lob wedges that sit lower when open. Vokey T, maybe TaylorMade LBV or Callaway Z/C. That’s maybe it?

If you mean it’s forgiving when opening up, that’s great to hear. I just bought a Glide T grind when they went on sale, but haven’t done any practice with it open, just simulator practice and vacation rounds.

Yeah, I mean when opening them up it exposes that bounce

Anyone using a high lofted S grind out here? I'm curious how users find the S grind in a 58 & 60 degree wedge, or even all throughout their set (eg. 50S, 56S, 60S)

My dad has this setup, says he loves it. Uses the 60 out of bunkers and not the strongest sand player, I think the extra bounce is very helpful for him.

I really wonder why they couldn’t incorporate the hydropearl tech with the black finish for these. They were able to do that with the iCrossover.

Take it for what it's worth.  I talked to Ping CS and they stated that in testing the difference in spin is 200-300 rpm's.  Really not much in it once you get to spinning some of these things 9-10K.

Changed my mind a little, and I am currently thinking of going 54 E and 58 H or T

Anyone else going with that setup?

My thinking is I want to try the "E" for sure, and going 54 E and 58 H or T gives me something similar to what I have in the Vokeys currently

That's what worries me!

I'm not sure I want the E as my highest lofted club though 🤔

What you're going with was my original plan. I might have to do the same.

how about:

50S for full shots

54H bent to 55 giving it 11 degrees of bounce (similar to vokey D grind)

58T bent to either 59 or 60 to give it more (7 or 8 ) bounce (along the lines of a vokey M grind)

I went with the 54 Eye2 and the 58 Eye2 in the midnight finish. I got excited over the dark finish.

I picked up a used Glide 3.0 58 Eye2 several years ago. Not only did my versatility around the greens improve my sand play improved a lot. I  picked up a Glide 3.0 54 Eye2 along the way and it worked out for me too. I never cared for the looks of the Eye2 but it outright performs for me and is very versatile IMO.
