New Ping S159 wedges - #2

pga43

Recommended Posts

First round and practise in the bag with S159 (54* S).

Really nice wedge. Feels a hair firmer than a Vokey on a full swing, but that also translates into a more solid feeling overall.

Performs really well around the green and on 50 yard shots.

The S grind can handle some forward shaft lean on full swings too.

Had these on course for the first time and they might be my favorite wedge I've owned . They sit so nice and tight down by the ball. 54S is wonderful but the 58H is obscenely good. So easy to execute any shot with it. Well done, Ping.

S300. The off the rack stock is just too light for me.

Stock ZZ115 is also too light for me. I went with Modus 125 Wedge. Have played it before and will pair well with my i230s in Modus 115 S.

I have the 54S with a modus 130x and to me it feels cast. Kind of a lack of feel/feedback. Also, the leading edge sits very tight/close to the ground. As a digger, I just feel I have to be very aware of AoA and weight. I do like the wedge, it is just is a bit different.

That’s exactly what I need.  As a picker with tight fairway lies, that should work perfectly.

Has anyone gone with the black finish and can report on wear?  Or if they notice any difference in the lack of hydropearl if you've played any prior versions with hydropearl?

3-4 rounds so far and zero wear on the finish

This would be my exact spec. Don’t love the idea that the S grind might have propensity to dig since I like to trap my full shot wedges. I may have to experiment with the W grind

The S grind has the trailing edge relief. The F grind in Vokey does not have any trailing edge relief. The most similar Ping grind would be the W, but it would have a slightly wider sole.

I think of the S grind as a hybrid of Vokey S and D. More full sole like the Vokey S, but some relief like the D too.

For all intents and purposes, they're the same.

Getting into the weeds, the Ping is a hair wider in the sole, has a hair of heel relief and a hair of trail edge relief.

In the real world, we're talking extremely subtle differences.

They'll play very much the same.

I’ve had a few rounds with mine and they’re pretty good but honestly I think I like my Glide 2.0 Stealths a tad better. Huge fan of the H grind in the lob, though.

Stealth 2.0 wedges are damn near perfect.

I wanted to circle back to this after another round. Hit a couple of shots off of hard packed coquina today with a couple of different wedges and have absolutely no wear. Appears to be a great finish.

I've played two rounds with the 50 and 54 S. Love these. First time I've had Ping wedges with S300 and they're awesome for me. Now, if only I can get them to send out my 60H....

Ah man my midnight wedges, 54s and 58s. Incredible wedges. I'd have to compare properly but i'd bet the soles are noticeably more compact than the superb 2.0's and the head a bit smaller. Also noticed a straight leading edge which imo makes the lob wedge so much better. Feel is brilliant, spin is extremely impressive and they were working from everywhere tho i didn't hit many bunker shots.

Best wedges I've ever hit.

It’s been a while since I tried the LBK but the b feels like it has a little more heel relief and I’m a lot more comfortable opening it up a little. Also felt like the LBK had a sharper leading edge although they both sit pretty tight to the turf. So far I am really liking the B grind and the LBK didn’t last very long for me.

Side note is that I do not love my 54s. It’s digging easier than I like with my sand. Gonna try a 56 w next.

Yeah, these new long awaited Ping wedges are alot better performing than there looks deceive. Hit a few different grinds and the black on the mat store range and wow yeah....only thing with Ping sadly is youre stuck with the shafts they choose for their equipment....i want the KBS hi rev shaft in them....only to be told they dont do that shft as a custom order.....nice one Ping.....seriously.....youve just lost a huge market share with your no custom shaft policy.

Three hitouts now and i have no idea how i ever lived without them. A closer comparison with my 54* 2.0 Stealth showed little difference in the size and sole. The S159 is a touch more narrow in the very heel end. The 58* is where the real differences are noticeable. The sole is far less bulky and IMO it's for the better, certainly for me personally. The head IMO is a tad more compact too. It's both easy to use and quite versatile. It goes without saying that the S159 leading edge is straighter. Whereas I survived with the 2.0 58* i now i thrive. They really spin too. Ping has knocked it out of the park.
