Charlie Woods going at the PGAT a bit early

How do these qualifiers work for amateurs? Can anyone enter who’s willing to lose money or is there a handicap limit? Does anyone know what his handicap is?

Good question when it comes to PGAT qualifiers.  The Monday qualifier has become fairly difficult to get in, hence the pre-qualifier.  Pretty much anyone can get into the pre-qualifier with $250 and if you are an Am you need an index of 2.0 or better.  If you tick the box "pro" then they don't ask for your index.

I don't know what the PGA local sectional (they run qualifiers on behalf of PGAT) does for people who shoot high scores, but for USGA qualifiers, if you don't shoot within 8 shots of the course rating, you get a letter basically saying don't come back until you can prove you are skilled.  So not sure if PGA sends letters.  If they do, I'm sure they will conveniently forget to send one to Charlie.

The block list grows as a result of this thread.

Regarding blocking ppl. I use to swear I’d never do it, but I gave in and blocked a particularly pesky member. And it’s been great. But what I don’t like is that even though you have them blocked, when someone quotes them you can then see the blocked persons content. I find it counterintuitive. Hopefully it’s addressed in future updates.

I was like, can he even get the ball out there that far with these guys

But then see,

Charlie’s high school coach, Toby Harbeck, told me Charlie’s drives with his “normal” swing speed are in the 275- to 280-yard range, but with his “hard” swing, he can easily crank one out there 300-plus yards.

https://golf.com/news/charlie-woods-harder-setup-pnc-championship/?amp=1

Of course there’s much more to the game than just that but that was surprising.

Distance isn't that big of a deal anymore....everybody with golf equipment and technology can hit the ball far.

Heck there is a guy who is 67 years old swinging at 119mph at local course.

Interesting. Yeah I think it’s fine he plays in what he wants until it gets to a point where he gets invites or preferred over people trying to make a living. That’s when it would become distasteful in my opinion.

He's 15. It's an experience he needs to get out of the way. That's why he's here.

Not saying he's guaranteed to be a star or make the Tour ... but it's something almost everyone goes through.

Oh, I know. I'm actually pulling for the kid, what a great story it would be.

My 'Oh man' was because I knew this thread was going to get messy when the sharks smelled the 86 (blood).

Woods' following increased to more than 50 fans as he headed for the back nine, including one grandmother who learned that he was competing and pulled her granddaughter out of school in the hope of Woods noticing her.

After Woods left the 12th green, another fan approached him with a pen and a copy of Tiger's book, "How I Play Golf," demanding Charlie sign the book. When an official told the fan it wasn't allowed, she made a commotion of shushes and yells, including "I live here," as Woods teed off on No. 13.

Woods' already bad day could have been worse if not for his two-man security detail, which included a Martin County sheriff's deputy.

I honestly did not have an issue as to his entry into the prequalifier. What annoys me is the overcoverage of a 15 y/o kid who according to the junior golf rankings is not an elite junior. Just because of his name and father, the expectations for him are so overboard  because of what he does at the PNC, which is a laugh and giggle event along with the media hype. The real maker of his talent will be in what events he actually wins along with any future college career. To me it would be a mistake for him to forego his experience in both high school and college and just focus on being a kid and enjoying the privilege he has at the moment.

The thing about this crazy game we love so much is that there are going to be bad days.  We've ALL had them.  As far as what I know about CW is that he seems to be a very well mannered young man who is being properly raised.

Charlie shooting a 12 on the Par 4 seventh hole will hopefully be a good albeit painful experience for him.

I know this from personal experience as I've also shot an 11 on a Par 4, my worst score ever after 3 consecutive drives that hooked into the woods for OBs.

I'm still thankful though that this happened in a non-tournament round.

Anyway, I'm curious to find out what the play-by-play story was for Charlie on this hole as it looks like water would not be in play for his drive as the the forced carry was just 270 so he would have easily carried that with his drive.

The approach/second shot would be a bit trickier as the green is protected on 3 sides by water so I'm assuming that he probably had more than a couple of water balls in this area.

I just read this , I’m a bit surprised they didn’t have more control over the situation , I know tiger is cheap but put a phone call into your security ppl and get a couple big bodies out there for the lad or being a teenager was a was a** to dad wanting this and got what he asked for.   As the son of a military dad , which tigers was , adolescent life lessons where painful at times.

More security or put Stevie on the bag for him

kid has some balls I’ll give him that , if my dad was Tiger woods , 2nd greatest golf of all time , I don’t know if I wouldn’t play polo, soccer , or anything else but golf.  Good for him 👍👍👍 would be amazing and a wonderful story for him to succeed
