I'm sure it's against the spirit of the game somehow to use "golf" as a verb.

 

When used on the course, my group invokes two stroke penalty.

As a practical matter, common usage legitimizes language/words.  Human communication evolves over time, and the arbiters of "proper language" don't exercise any authority beyond the style guides that various publications may use.  Although it sometimes makes me cringe "I've become accustomed to it." Or "I got used to it."  if you prefer an alternative phraseology.  Or "I get it," informally.  😀

No.  Golfing , to golf - I think is  regional slang.  The proper term is “ I’m going to play golf “.  I am no English teacher.( shocker 😂 ) But I don’t think golf is a verb.

Seeing that every dictionary I can find references both noun and verb usages, I’ll accept your proposition that you’re not an English teacher.

It’s still a regional term. I’ve never heard a person from the south say “ golfing “ or “ going to golf “  but Almost every transplant we have from the north  says both for a time until they get converted 😂.

Now you don't get much more southern than old Charlotte, NC which is where my Uncle was born and raised. He went 'golfing' all the time. Guess he wasn't converted. Then again, language was a matter of grammar for him, not religion.

In South Carolina , we call people from Charlotte “ Yankees until proven otherwise “.  Same as folks from Charleston or atlanta.

LOL. I figured that moonshine running was the epitome of southern style (and he was a moonshiner in his younger days). Everything is in Jest. I'm a native hoosier, so I'm a total yankee! But I love the south!

Or what you are seeing quoted from back in the day didn't actually look like that then. Forum software has been through a bunch of changes/migrations since then. Of course a rational reply explaining that has no sense of being for some here. 🤣
