Taylormade V-Steel: Band of Brothers

I need a 4 wood to complete the set.

If you find them in bad shape, just take them somewhere and get them sand blasted. They come out great. It also takes a lot of the scratches and crap out of them. I did it with my 3 and 5 wood heads. Here is what the 3 wood looked like when finished:

How durable is the club after sandblasting? Did you put anything on for a finish? I am thinking about re-doing my V Steel woods.

It is plenty durable. I played the 3 wood an entire season and it looked the same at the end of the season. No rust or anything.

What makes these so damn good? I'm still trying to find a newer 3w to replace my V Steel but have a hard time hitting any of the newer heads off the turf. What characteristic of the V Steel makes it better? Lie angle? Sole profile? Head shape?

For me i believe it is a combo of head shape and sole profile. That sole cuts through most lies without any trouble. The head size is small enough that it suits my eye, but big enough that I have confidence in slight mishits. Man I love the VSteels...

I have a retail V-Steel 13 Degree T/S that has been in and out of my bag since 2004. I absolutely love it. I always wanted to get a tour version with the paint break, but I never did.

But looking back, a lot of people used to complain that the club face set up closed and that it was a hook machine. Why doesn't anyone complain about that now?

I'm just wondering...

Many players need something that 'measures' open, in order to have it sit naturally "square" to their eye. The V-steels measure within a half degree or so of "square" or a 0* face angle.....so for some players they would sit a bit closed. Of course we can always hold the face angle wherever we want it...regardless of how it would want to sit on it's own

I honestly think TM should remake the V-STEEL with modern technology.

If they brought the V-STEEL back with the same exact sole design and a carbon crown like the M-Series, it could very well be the best wood ever made.

Why the carbon crown? There's nothing that needs to be changed about the COG position and flight characteristics of the V-Steel

I have TM 200 3 wood for 3 years so far.

Had the V Steel 13 T/s with a Pro Launch Blue and it was a bit low.

Recently bought a set of 3,5,7 woods and the 5 (regular) and 7 (stiff) are great to use.

No hooking as per hybrids !!

Mine are bare metal, as is my TM200 3 wood !!

I rate them alongside other fairway greats... 906, G10, TISI, Cleveland Launcher !!!

I don't know. Just trying to think of ways TM could refresh it slightly

Alright, I'm in!

I couldn't resist. There it was in the used bin at the Edwin Watts. Right at the exact moment that my trusy 2h was acting up. And I just happened to have an old D+ shaft laying around that is right at 5w length.

So, for a total weekend expenditure of $25, I have a 18° TaylorMade V Steel w/Diamana D+ and brand new Golf Pride 360 grip.

Goodness, the turf interaction on this thing is just wayyyyyyy too good. Catch it solid, it does what it should, just like any reasonably designed fairway wood.

But, catch it a little funny, steep or whatnot, and it just glides through the turf, producing a much better shot than deserved. Ball flight is plenty high, without ballooning too much (unless I really put a bad swing on it) and I can play it back and hit a semi-stinger with it as well.

All-in-all, a superb all-around clubhead and one that is more than enough for the vast majority of us!

Good grief, I was set to buy a new 2 hybrid this weekend, but now I will probably dust off the old V Steel. I finally got one made the way I wanted when I first started playing golf, with a Proforce Fairway in it. I don't hit fairways much, but I may just give it another go before I grab a replacement. I did buy it a new hat last year and picked up one of the generic white TMs.

Here is mine that I did a ghost finish on and it has a x stiff ust Irod fairway shaft. Great club! I kind of switch between this one and a 08 Burner. The burner launches a little higher and is a little better for me off the tee although I hit it a little shorter than the v-steel. Love both of them really!

Every time I jump into this thread I just want to put my V-Steel back in the bag. All these finishes are so sexy! I need to find a guide/learn to do this myself.

So I joined up. Have been looking for what seems like forever for a 3 wood I can hit consistently off the deck with no success. In doing research, I kept coming across the V Steel love. Found a 13* 3 wood on Ebay for $25, so I figured wth. When it came in, I found it to be just as advertised, but a bit low on trajectory, so carrying hazards would be an issue. Found a 15* 3 wood on Ebay for $25, so I ordered it as well. It came in Saturday. Wow! Hit some balls with it at the range yesterday before a round, and it was just sweet. My first shot with it during the round was off pinestraw between 2 trees with a 15 foot gap. The ball shot out of there, and left me 85 yards for my 3rd shot on a par 5. They are both in my bag, and I doubt they will leave it any time soon.

I played a V Steel 5w for years with an X100 shaft and it was a very solid club. Since I didn't use it very often I opted to replace it with another wedge and sold it...wish I would've held on to it.

With that being said, I just ordered a V Steel 3w in pretty good shape for $19. :) I doubt it will replace my TiSi Tec but you never know.

Still loving my V-steel 7w with the Quadra Fire Express RB shaft. The feel of a nutted shot is just unbeatable, and it goes forever. In fact, I think my 7w is pretty much out-hitting my trusty R9 4w, which has also been a solid performer for me.

I have a V-steel 4w head sitting around that I am thinking of shafting up with same shaft as the 7w. Hope I can get the same performance.

Just joined the band of brothers because of this thread. Picked up the 3w, 5w and the 7w with original steel shafts. Left handed. Loving the 7w! The 5w and 3w are still a work in progress. So after reading the whole thread, the basic consensus is that the original steel shafts are more than adequate but if going graphite, the purple ice is the cats meow. Since those are difficult to source, the next choices seem to be the aldila, grafalloy and blueboard. Looking for a second set to reshaft in graphite.

The V Steel Tours with the paint break hosels were probably the best overall fwy woods I've ever played. It was a great combination of its ability to hit off the tee as well as off the deck. I remember when I got my first one my buddy hit it and wouldn't leave me alone about buying it off of me.
