IN REGARDS TO THE NIKE COVERT PERFORMANCE DRIVER

Ok just returned from my first bb tournament of the year. Ladies and gentlemen, this is no joke...I just got home from maybe the best driving day I have ever had. Usually I am longish off the tee but not the most accurate and on a good day we usually play 30% of my tee shots. Well today we played maybe 80%!!! I felt so confident standing over the ball and its like I could just feel where the ball was going to go. Other than the very first hole where I missed the fwy to the right every other hole the ball was long and in the fwy. I hate the word effortless but truly I felt like I could just take a rip at the ball and could just trust the club to do the work for me. My ball flight was cut almost in half which produced a ton of roll. I have always hit a cut/slight fade and today was awesome looking at these low long cut shots finding the fwy and then taking off like a rocket once they hit. People this experiment is worth the 17.99 + installation. Unless you have a major swing fault I just don't see how this wont help you!
Sounds very cool, what is the exact spec i regards to playing length, tipping etc, for you performance head.

I have a Ping i20 head that I want to do something fun with. My first try will be an old BiMatrix shaft from a 2-wood that played right at 44". If that doesn't work, I'll go find an all steel shaft to put in.

Put together a R7 425 tour issue with an x300. Tipped 1 1/2 inches. I took out some of my old Persimmon/steel shafted woods and trimmed to the same length. Probably 43-43.5 range.

Some history-
Scratch golfer. Growing up woods and the driver were my best clubs. During college, I couldn't play much. That was the time longer and lighter graphite seemed to really take off. Since getting back into the game a bunch, I have struggled with these longer lighter woods. I wanted it all to work, but something never felt right.

Today-
The driver on the range felt amazing. eyeballing it next to my gamer, R11s with Oban kioshi X stiff, the flight was very similar but the control and feel was amazing. The best comparison I can make is to my competitive baseball days. Every hitter has a length and weight bat they prefer. For me, the ultra light shafts do give amazing results, but its like swinging a plastic whiffle bat. With the heavier club, I can hit home runs with much more consistency. There may be a heavy graphite alternative that is a happy medium, but I am sold on moving in that direction.

Tour-
Yes its true we dont see this on tour, but those guys need to squeak every ounce out of there game to be competitive. Plus, they can practice all day every day to groove a swing with a lighter club.

Distance-
Due to the volume of balls I hit on target, the distance seemed almost the same. I will take both clubs to my fitter here in the next month or so, and try and Frankenstein together something that is the best of both worlds. For me, the heavier club fist my swing strength and tempo, allowing me to swing it like an iron.

Conclusion-
If your a strong hitter or fast tempo, and struggle with anything graphite, give it a go!

So how many in this thread have gone back to graphite......and why?
I have. Tried the steel experiment in a 983k and it didn't go so well. Feel was terrible. Trajectory was way too low. No noticeable improvement in dispersion. Back to my 83 gram Ahina and pretty happy with it.

I enjoy club building and undoubtedly I'll eventually head down the graphite shaft road again. However now that I have a setup which I produce consistent results with I have no immediate to need to change. I will happily keep this X100 setup with the J40. When I get itchy feet I'll find another head to build up rather than change this. This X100 setup took a few build changes to get it just right, while the first build attempt didn't really sing for me I could definitely see the potential. I'm sure glad I persevered.

So I have had my Nike Covert w/X100 in my bag for a month or so and have been hitting the ball well but actually struggling with accuracy. My last three rounds accuracy wise I was 36%, 57% and then 53% and my average for about 33 saved rounds is 55%. Well I bought myself a Cleveland Classic 290 Head and put in an S300 shaft and wow what a dramatic difference. Went out and played my first round with it and drove it at 83% only missing two fairways and both were in the first cut of rough. I have never driven the ball above 60%. So I can't argue that it was anything but the classic driver, its really such a phenomenal head. I can't describe why it performs so well but it just does. I mean I guess you could call it new club love but considering that I keep track of my stats and I switch drivers a lot and have never had this happen!
Those that went back, did it because they tipped them too much and didn't like the feel. The DG X100 has a raw butt freq of around 270 cpm and torque in the 2.8* range, which makes a pretty stout shaft. If you tip it excessively, you reduce the flex and torque even more. It will feel like the V2 96 X tipped, or like a board, re-bar, etc. Many who use X flex graphite would be far happier with an R300 DG (perhaps tipped a bit). Steel shafts should be lively and you have to accept that to be at ease with them.

They went back for the same reason some have stayed, the "fit".

Steel isnt for everyone, and like that video stated, Some people "need" graphite" :)

Most people dont realize that the key to any driver fitting you well lies more in the length its play than in flex or weight. Its all about getting in the correct position. Id take almost anything at 43 inches before I took the correct flex in 45 inches.

How many of us are SUPER particular about playing the correct length putter...........stands to reason club lenth should equal importance in the driver as well, problem is to many people insist 45" is "their" length

I was surprised that the steel shaft length which best suited me was 44.5. I was expecting to go much shorter. With graphite I normally play 44.75 - 45.

I'm considering putting a steel shaft in one of my driver heads. I am looking for some suggestions on shafts. I currently play a 910 d3 with project x 8a4 shaft and a speeder 7.1 x flex. What shaft/flex would you suggest I try out (keeping in mind that I would like to get it tipped to somewhere between 44 and 44.5 inches).

Thanks, Shayan.

I think the X100 would be a good place to start.
I was playing a 7A3 prior to going x100. With the 7a3 playing at 45' I had awesome trajectory and distance but really struggled with consistency and finding the right tempo. My misses were in both directions and usually a fairway over. Shortening the 7a3 was never really entertained as I knew I needed more weight.
I based my J40 X100 build on aiming for a similar static weight to my 3 wood, then tipping or extending to suit all based on feel (I've no SW scale), what was finding the center of the club face, and the desired trajectory.

Beware I'm no pro club builder, this is just what worked for me.

That was my assumption too, I've never consistently found the center of club face as much as this with a driver before.

As a matter of fact I do. I took a DG300 and sent it to Vibrant golf and had it coated a Royal Blue. Looks kind of like a Grafalloy Blue shaft!

Almost. The S300 in my K went un tipped and while it performs really well, every once in a while will squirt on my. I didnt have an x100 laying around and since I play it at 43, could afford the tipping space.

My fav set up and the only way I build these now is UNTIPPED X100 - Let the shaft do its job - its uber stable so let it kick

When did tipping become so "mandatory" with shafts - I rarely tip anything anymore

Tipping is another myth that needs to be busted
No offense, but I wholeheartedly disagree.

I built a set of irons with DGS parallel, and tipped them an extra 2" to approximate DGX. There's no way it would have worked without that extra tipping; DGS parallel isn't enough shaft for my swing, sadly speaking.

I've installed DGX in drivers in the past, untipped, and again, it's not enough shaft. The word that best described my tee game the last time I tried that stick was "carnage." Not meant in a good way. :)

The butt section is the stiffest part of the shaft. The idea in tipping is to balance the correct amount of that butt section in the installation. Leaving more tip softens the club through removing more of the stiffest part of the shaft. DG shafts are (or so it was said 10 years ago) made to be installed, untipped, in a borethru installation. In order to match up the flex in a standard bore installation, you need to tip it to bring the appropriate amount of butt section into play.

If DGX untipped works for you, then obviously you need go that route. That doesn't mean it's overrated or a myth.

I am more of a swinger now a hitter so I can personally get away with loose
I can see that working, yeah. It's so true that smoother swinging folks have more options.

Personally, I can use softer shafts than I used to, having taken a fair bit of the hit out of my swing. There are times, though... ugly ugly stuff. LOL

Play well. <tip cap>

OK, I am all in. I went to our local golfland warehouse to check out what the options were for reshafting my new Ping Anser. I told them I wanted to try steel out and they kind of laugh at the idea but thought it would be cool. Due to the Anser's adapter they wanted to check with Ping first before they did anything.

So I ended up getting sucked into their used bin and found a sweet rocketballz tour 3 wood and adams super 4 hybrid. I hit both of them in the simulator and was crushing both of them.

Then a manager came out of the back with this old 10* Big Bertha Warbird to compare the shaft length with 3 wood to show me how much shorter driver shafts used to be. I begged them to let me swing it a couple times on the simulator. I was killing it with this old driver that up until reading this thread I would have had absolutely no interest in. I was hitting the Warbird about 10 yards further than the 3 wood, which I was thinking about using as my new driver. So I tell them I have to have this old driver. When they looked up the price in the computer they just started laughing and said I'll sell it to you for $10. DONE DEAL! The cash was out of wallet so fast I think I gave myself a paper cut. They picked it up on EBay for $3 so I guess they really price gouged me there. :black eye:

So now I just have to figure out how to get a steel shaft in to my Anser and have it play to a similar length, kick and swing weight as this Warbird. The Warbird has a Memphis "10" shaft from True Temper and appears to be pretty stock. If anyone could give me some tips on getting this started I would appreciate it. I am head out to the course now to give this old driver another day in the sun.
