OK, I am all in. I went to our local golfland warehouse to check out what the options were for reshafting my new Ping Anser. I told them I wanted to try steel out and they kind of laugh at the idea but thought it would be cool. Due to the Anser's adapter they wanted to check with Ping first before they did anything.

So I ended up getting sucked into their used bin and found a sweet rocketballz tour 3 wood and adams super 4 hybrid. I hit both of them in the simulator and was crushing both of them.

Then a manager came out of the back with this old 10* Big Bertha Warbird to compare the shaft length with 3 wood to show me how much shorter driver shafts used to be. I begged them to let me swing it a couple times on the simulator. I was killing it with this old driver that up until reading this thread I would have had absolutely no interest in. I was hitting the Warbird about 10 yards further than the 3 wood, which I was thinking about using as my new driver. So I tell them I have to have this old driver. When they looked up the price in the computer they just started laughing and said I'll sell it to you for $10. DONE DEAL! The cash was out of wallet so fast I think I gave myself a paper cut. They picked it up on EBay for $3 so I guess they really price gouged me there. :black eye:

So now I just have to figure out how to get a steel shaft in to my Anser and have it play to a similar length, kick and swing weight as this Warbird. The Warbird has a Memphis "10" shaft from True Temper and appears to be pretty stock. If anyone could give me some tips on getting this started I would appreciate it. I am head out to the course now to give this old driver another day in the sun.

Memphis Ten is great shaft, fits A LOT of swing types. What are your normal driver specs with graphite?

I enjoy club building and undoubtedly I'll eventually head down the graphite shaft road again. However now that I have a setup which I produce consistent results with I have no immediate to need to change. I will happily keep this X100 setup with the J40. When I get itchy feet I'll find another head to build up rather than change this. This X100 setup took a few build changes to get it just right, while the first build attempt didn't really sing for me I could definitely see the potential. I'm sure glad I persevered.

I was curious, how tall are you. I was thinking about putting the x-100 in the j40 driver. I'm 6'. Swing spread 115. Did shaft length feel that much different from 44-44.5

For me the shaft just felt "wrong" unitl it got shorter. For me that magic length is around 43". So if what ever length you go with doesnt feel good, dont give up until you have tried a few shorter lengths

What do you think of a cleveland classic with a diamana whiteboard 64 vtl (i know its the made for) instead of a c.kua 59 in stiff. Cant hit he c.kua at all, loose it right and when i try to compensate it duck hooks. My ss is 105-110mph and i normally play a r11s with a kai'li 60s. (And hit it good!) Any thoughts?

Wow....add another member to the Steel Shaft club.

First my background:

AGE: 26

Ht wt: 6'1'' 195lb

Handicap: 7

Swing Speed: 116mph

Driving distance: 300+

Got my x100 for $10 off ebay. Had an extra adapter for my Adams Speedline Super LS 8.5*. I was playing a Black Tie 6M3 x-stiff at 45". Got this X100 tipped 1/2" and playing 44".

First day on the range was great. Same flight path, same everything. My misses were actually about the same. But I had less misses. I have a problem with going past parallel and with this shaft if I go past parallel I FEEL it. So, it is actually helping me! I will say the 1st thing I noticed was the ball landing......ALWAYS get a nice 10ft bounce forward (+yards). I did not get this large of a initial landing bounce with my Graphite Black Tie. The 2nd thing I notice was, if I get on it, like try to "Bubba smash" the ball.....results were dead straight. Hit 10 balls and got 9/10 dead straight = winning! With my graphite, I am usually around 60% accurate with it.

If anything, I do not see a lot of difference between the Steel vs Graphite other than accuracy. They perform around the same. Just graphite shaft = $200, Steel Shaft = $10.

I will update after my first round of golf....

  • 4 weeks later...

I picked up a Cleveland Classic 270 today with 12* loft for literally next to nothing. I got it just to play around with it as I thought it looked cool, and Iv never had a 12* driver. Then I came across this thread....

I think I want to do this, however here are my questions...

1. its 12*, how will a steel shaft coincide with a 12* head?
2. i do not have crazy high driver swing speeds, im more of a low 90s swinger

so what would be the best shaft for me? still the x100 be ok?

You should check out either an S300 or even a regular flex with a swing speed in the low 90's.

Anyone know the tip size of the Callaway Biggest Big Burtha...? It's a smallish head compared to todays standard and I have a 10* head. And do I need a new insert for the Shaft..?

Should be .335".

Has anybody put a steel shaft and a lighter, graphite shaft in the same driver -- head-to-head (or shaft to shaft as it were) in a Trackman or other launch monitor, just to see what the SS differences are? Steel has been working for me (Dynamic Gold Lite S300) but I've kept it long -- the extra heft feels too good for me. I know a lighter shaft should give you more clubhead speed, but how much? 1-2 mph? 5?

It's been a while since I posted in this thread. But I still have My DGSL-X100 shafts in my 986 tour persimmons. DGSL is a great alternative to Dynamic Gold for those that are worried about total weight. True Temper did a great job keeping the stiff tip unlike the Dynamic Gold Lite, which had a much softer tip.

The old "rule of thumb" with Dynamic Gold in a driver was that the heel (sole) to the first step was:
X- 8"
S- 10"
R- 12"

You had to tip according to the bore depth of that particular club. It was easier in the old days when persimmon was 1.25" or a bore through. Don't be afraid if this means you are tipping the shaft a lot. I've taken 4" off the tip of X-100 to go into certain 3 woods.

I'd debate putting an X-100 in a Nike tip to try in the Covert Tour if the adapters weren't more expensive than the shaft. Plus, I still get better spin reduction with heavy graphite like PX-10A2 and Diamana 103 over steel.
