Phil Mickelson - Animal

Saw this live as I woke up in the middle of the night and switched the TV on to watch the coverage for a bit, loving it. Just a pity the guys in front were in the way of the camera.

Phil’s swing is so timeless and epic....fluid, old school perfection...

He made it for eagle, and in classic Phil fashion bogeyed the next two holes.

Rules question- did the guys on the green have to wait for Phil or his caddie to get all the way up to the green to mark his ball, or did a rules official do it? I'm sure they couldn't mark his ball without his express permission or even then maybe they couldn't.

Yes I saw the video. Actually watched it live. I know you are a GCA member so I'll present facts. That's what you guys live for correct?

The 14th hole at Jeju is 353 yards from tips. Elevation at Jeju Island is 6300 feet plus (ball flys far). The hole is actually designed as a slight dog leg left. The scorecard distance would then be measured to the corner of the dog leg and then the approach shot to the hole. That's where 353 comes from. The hole plays 30+ feet downhill at elevation. Think longer Castle Pines distance. Phil as others playing it downhill downwind firm at elevation blew it over the dog leg straight at the green which shortened the distance of the hole significantly. 350 carry? Not a chance.

If you actually watched the video Phils tee shot hits short of the green by 40-50 feet, had a hard hop forward, then rolled out and clanked the pin. The shot was amazing. It ranks up there with the 370+ tee shot DJ hit at Kapalua that Brandel called the greatest shot in history. However not as great as Andrew Magee at Phoenix when he aced the par 17th hole in 2001.

I wasn't there, didn't watch it live, but yes I did actually watch the video as I asked you if you did. I watched the few seconds clip with 353 for yardage on the screen for his tee shot. It looked like the ball hit on the front of the green (if it didn't take off 10 yards perhaps), thus my comment. Elevation and playing downhill changes effective yardage, but they don't post effective yardage on tv screens/scorecards.

FYI according to golf magazine. https://www.golf.com/news/2019/10/18/phil-mickelson-near-ace-par-4-driver-cj-cup/

With the group in front of him standing around the green ahead watching, Mickelson took a mighty swing that almost caused him to lose balance. **His ball launched high in the air, then landed on the front of the green and started tracking toward the hole.**

So his ball hit the front of the green instead of right in front of it and then still ran 40-50 feet to the hole. Regardless Phil didn't carry it 350 as you claimed. It was an amazing shot. An all timer. No need to embellish it.

GRM I don't know why you are so confrontational. First it was, "I watched it live and he hit short of the green, not on the green." Then it was, "It doesn't play 353, it is downhill with a dogleg." Now it is, "so it did land on the front of the green but who cares if I mispoke."

Is it so hard to say, "hmm I guess I was mistaken." I don't anticipate seeing that, but giving you a chance. I make mistakes and you see my name on here and other sites, thus I own it. You are on an anonymous internet forum where no one knows who you are and still can't concede what I said was correct.
