Would you trade golf cart for a caddie?

If your local course gave you the option to walk with a caddie for the same rate as a cart, would you go for it? Most likely a teenager looking for extra money or their first job. Kind of like the days before every course had carts.

I walk 99% of the time. Never had a caddie before, but I think it would be fun to have one.

Ditto. The caddie can push my cart if they want just as long as they can read putts.

Only experience with a caddie was a forecaddie assigned to my group in a scramble. Had my best putting round ever. Putting is a lot easier when someone that knows the greens tells you where to aim.

I wouldn't need a caddie on a course I know well. I would use a caddie rather than a cart on a course that is unfamiliar.

I've played with a caddie at a few resort courses and enjoyed the sense of not having to do anything as I stroll down the fairway. Even playing with a push cart seems like a bit of a chore.

Absolutely. I've had nothing but awesome experiences with caddies.

Remember, it's not a pro caddie, it's just someone who carries the bag so you can walk without carrying. I would imagine it would be some local junior/ high school players. I would do it until it causes some problems.

As a former caddie, I would love the opportunity. I usually walk and carry. I have never played anywhere caddies were even available.

I would imagine if a course found a way to make more money off caddies vs carts, they would at least have it as an option.

I play public courses, the cost of a caddie would be much, much more than a cart. The private course I used to caddie at is the top course in Ct, lot of really good golfers there who can afford the caddie rates. In the late 80s I used to get $30-35 a bag. Must be at least $75-100 now.

That much for every round would be a little much, maybe every so often.

The only times I've optioned for the caddie was at the Pebble Beach area courses. An extra $150 on top of green fee, but it was pretty cool.

Yeah, something like a vacation round or special event would be great. I'll never be able to join a country club anyway do that would be my only opportunity.

Follow up question: Does your local course allow you to bring your own caddie? Let's say your son or daughter wants to tote the bag for you. Would the course charge you?

Until I cannot carry or push my own, at the home course... I’d rather tote my own. On the away course (not the OP’s question), sure I’d take up a caddie.

If the caddie had good eyes, for my yearly cart costs, yes. Even when it's too hot to walk, I'd have one in the cart.

Carts are scourge of golf.

Nothing like a round of golf with a good caddie. My club has a group of them. They aren’t all good. I vibe with a few of them. Don’t vibe with some others. I’m newish to the club so still trying them out.

I love rounds with a caddie, but they definitely aren’t cheap these days. Gone are the days of a teenager carrying your bag for peanuts (at least in my area).

Just got back from a vacation in Thailand. Most courses require you to pay for a caddy. They all can read putts incredibly well. I won’t need them every round back home, but I think if I’m playing a new course that I’ve never played before, it’d be nice to have one.

I think we would lose about 50% of recreational players, if carts are taken away.. Too many out of shape golfers in my area.

100% yes, especially at the cost of renting a golf cart.

I played with a caddy in the Dominican Republic. A young college student. He was great! To shoot your handicap on a course I'd never seen before with rental clubs says all you need to know.

Now that's the way golf was meant to be played.

I'd be happy to continue pushing my own cart and just have somebody as a forecaddie to keep an eye on out on our tee shots to eliminate time looking for balls in thick rough.

Every time if the price was the same. Nothing compares to walking with a caddie even if it were a junior caddie.

Playing a round of golf with a caddie that knows the game is the best way to play IMO - and it's a bonus if they know how to read greens. With my motorized push cart I would be less inclined to hire someone to just carry my bag, particularly when there is no additional fee for me to use my cart. Carts are cash cows for golf courses - and are a plague on us that walk :)
