Is Matthew Wolff's swing a modified baseball swing?

He brings the clue back and then sort of pauses. It almost looks like a ball player waiting for a fat pitch and bam - he hits it a mile. He is not built like Popeye so where does all that power come from? Amazing. He also has a full game of driving, irons, wedges and putter. The Hulk is going to have to up his game.

Nope, it's a golf swing in the tradition of Jimmy Bruen, Eamon Darcy and Jim Furyk. It works just fine when the timing is on.

I saw a lot of slow motion footage this week since Wolff is contending.

He has the weirdest upswing and has a beautiful downswing. I can’t believe I put these 2 parts in the same sentence.

His power comes from his legs/hips and how he uses the ground. See that foot go all the way up on his front toes then the massive step down and major firing of the hips, and a slight jump up at impact. Thats where he is generating a load of speed and power. Its like how Rory geneartes tons of power from his hips.

If you just watch the downswing, It looks as good as anybody. He has power and hit's it pretty straight. It's a timing swing so it can get lost for a while though. He is a tough kid though.

People get way too caught up on backswing. He is perfect on the Downswing. Furyk same way and was even better than Wolffe and pretty much everyone else on the planet through the ball and being square longer than anyone.

Yes. He fires the legs/hips so fast you can barely see it in slow motion. Is the jump at the end to protect his back and knees? I thought I saw a video or article where some guys do this to avoid hurting themselves.

Txg did a video about how that stomping motion with the lead foot can help generate power. I'm working on it myself and I definitely feel like I'm using more of the ground for power

I love the quirky swings like his. That said though, those types of swings can have yips from time to time. The beauty of them is that they own these self taught swings and can work their way out of those yips. I think Wolff is going to contend(and win) a lot.

He hasn't been the most consistent golfer though. I wonder if it's a factor of his swing or his mindset. He is still a young player after all. We see a different swing and think it's too hard to execute, but standard swings aren't perfect either.

Lots of moving parts in that homegrown swing, but his impact position is spot on. No way could you (or should you) teach that swing, but it's proof you have to 'dig it out of the dirt' and figure out what works for you. I try not to watch his swing too much. I've got enough going on with mine. :-)

I was talking with a friend today and commenting on Wolff’s swing I’ve just told him “the guy looks like he’s swinging a bat at the ball”. When you’re born with a gift for golf don’t worry about style, you’ll be a great player anyways.

A swing like that requires timing and yes if the timing is off it goes South in a heartbeat. Not really yips like putting yips though

Another odd swing is Daniel Berger. Very flat. They said he got it from playing tennis, hitting backhands

His dad Jay Berger was a known tennis pro. I think he later became a tennis coach for pro players.

No it’s not. Aside from the lead foot it doesn’t share a lot in common with a very good baseball swing. He does use some dynamic motion which almost all baseball players use.

Well, even he says his baseball swing growing up had an influence to how he swings the golf club (Google it.)

It's no coincidence that those who have a lot of experience in other stick/object sports (tennis, baseball, hockey, etc...) often do well when taking up golf. Ultimately, if not immediately. While sometimes a lot is made how a baseball swing will "ruin" a golf swing (or vice versa), the fact remains is years of reps in delivering a stick accurately to a ball or puck goes a long way towards doing it in a modified form in another sport. These sports are more compatible and complementary to each other than not. Hand/eye/stick/ball coordination translates.

Agree. I've posted before about baseball being one of the reasons Americans dominate golf. Teaching young ones how to spin, load and strike a ball so it goes a long way. It's not exactly a golf swing but a very good base.

it's mostly his swing as the comments above are saying but to the OP's original comment, he's not built like popeye. Well, the kid is 6'0" and you can tell is built very solidly. It's not like this is Justin Thomas or something.

I don’t care what you call it it’s painful to watch and no way he can last on tour. At som point he will end up like tiger and destroying his left knee

Painful to watch? It's actually pretty cool to watch IMO. And if you watch closely, he completely pops his left foot off the ground at the end so that his foot and knee can release freely without much strain.
