Your latest "shot that keeps you coming back"

Not really sure I would ever walk away but I was playing last weekend and was probably having the worst front 9 in a loooong time. Step on the tee of number 9 which is a par 3 over water with the narrow part of the green in the front and bunkers on each side. Of course the flag is in the front begging for you to go at it and its a 2 tier green so anything long is a circus act put. I hit what I think is a somewhat less than solid shot and watch it as it tracks to the middle of the green. It lands right over the top of the flag on the up slope and spins back to less than a foot. That shot boosted my confidence for the back 9 for sure as I played it in 2 over! Funny game we play!

Par 3, 205, hit the flag stick on a hop. Bounces directly back towards the tee box and straight off the front-sloped green. Carded a 2 putt bogey.

Yesterday I played 9 with one if my daughters, her friend and my buddy.

I was too focused on coaching her without coaching her too much if you know what I mean and I was not focusing on my game.

After some pretty bad chipping I was ready to just help her and stop playing.

Next hole was a short par 4, 265 or so. Nice easy swing and I put it to 12 feet, 2 putted for a tap in birdie. Last 5 holes I played at even. So I guess one could say that drive got me back on track.

Hitting a long baby draw off the tee probably gives the biggest on-course rush, but its the memories of a few perfectly flushed iron shots that keep me awake at night. Nothing, to me, beats a perfectly struck mid-iron with a piercing trajectory and enough spin to do a hop and stop next to the hole.

Hole 3 at Glenwood Golf Club and I had never gotten along off the tee box. Straight ahead par 5 with ob down entire left side with a boundary defining fence. Yesterday I hit a draw with my three wood that finally started out right and bounded into left center of the fairway without flirting with the left side. Nice to add a positive memory to fall back on if I ever play it again.

If anything can go right, it might!

Yep, there are those shots that I play over and over in my head to reinforce positive memories.

Last round from elevated Par 3 tee box - elongated 45* angled green to tee, pond fronting right side, big bunker on left, pin back right measuring 195yds, plus left to right breeze that pushes the ball towards the pond. Using 24* 4 iron, I hit a sweet fade that landed between the pin and pond about 10' on the right, bounced once and ran off back edge 4yds, LW to 4" for tap in par. I struck the ball pure, exactly how I visualized it.

I am fortunate to have one or more per round which keeps me hungry to make more. Play well, people.

Last full swing of the day yesterday.

Straight uphill par 5 (520 yds) decently open down the middle but bunkers on both sides at intervals up the fairway and light trees on the outside right with same on left before a pond hazard.

1 - Slappy slice short into trees on right. Didn’t go 200.

2 - Solid punch out with 5i to left side of fairway. 205 to flag.

3 - THE SHOT - Gripped down 3W sawed-off that starts on a low trajectory up the left side of the fairway, fades about 15 yards, and lands just out of sight over the backside of the bunker fronting the green on the left hand side. Playing parters all whopping it up, as I’m a 22 and they had seen a very up and down round out me. Get up to the green and my ball must have rolled right past the cup, as it’s sitting on the back dead in line.

Rolled my birdie put four feet past but made the com backer for par, which is almost always a fun score for me.

GREAT way to cap a fun round after several (4+) rounds of feeling really crappy about my game and swing.

Aside from the obvious putts that *actually* drop, there's two shots for me that if I pull them off I couldn't care less what the rest of the round does.

1) High draw with driver (or my strong 3 wood) I simply aim down the right edge and bash it as hard as I dare knowing it'll draw back to the center of the fairway. Money.

2) 40-60 yard pitch that hops once and grabs hard leaving it a few feet from the pin after a gentle roll out. So damn satisfying.

We have a short little par 3 that's 118 yards. Sloped from back to front with deep bunkers guarding it. My tee shot hit the front fringe and spun back and left down into the very steep hill between 2 bunkers. The pin was 4 paces on the green so I short sided myself bad. Took my 58 and tried to get something close or below the hole but came up short and into the bunker. The bunker was deep enough that I could only see the top 1/3 of the pin even though I was only 20 feet from the hole. I splashed my bunker shot out with the 58 and it took one hop and into the hole for a smooth par. It was hole 17 and I was still chuckling to myself all the way up 18.

I had three today. Shot 83 when I've been consistently a bit lower than that so wasn't having the greatest day.

1. Par 4 - Decent drive, decent approach onto the green. Thought I was off the green but snuck it on about 50 ft from the hole. The putt broke about 6 feet left to right. Hit it absolutely perfect and it fell right in the middle with maybe 6 inches of pace left on it.

2. Par 3 - 170ish flag. Had a bit of a tail wind. I've been working out and trying to increase distance. Figured I'd test it out. A few years ago I would have hit 5 or 6 iron. Today I hit 8 iron. Absolutely flushed it. Pin high 15 ft right of the hole. Greens were atrocious, so it was like playing plinko. Tap in par though.

3. Par 3- 205 flag. Into a stout wind. Same as above. Used to be 3 iron and hope I can get it there. Today I hit 4 iron. Best contact I've made on an iron in a while. Flew it about 205ish and it rolled maybe 3 feet. See plinko greens above. Tap in par.

A few weeks ago, and it was a putt of all things - after I blew a wedge 30ft past the hole on my approach. Was facing a severe downhill right-to-left putt that easily could have rolled off the green.

No one was around (it was late in the day during the week) and I had a good score going at that point, so I took some time to walk around and assess the situation.

I read at least 10ft of break, given how slow I was going to have to hit the putt to keep the ball from rolling off the green.

Forced myself to aim at a spot about 10ft right of the hole and just got the ball rolling. A few feet in, the ball starts turning left. And kept turning as it rolled downhill.

Stopped 2 inches short of the cup. Tapped in for par. :)

17th hole in my last round. The entire back nine at my club can jump out and bite you at any point, and the 17th is no exception. Very difficult par 3 that seems to swirl the wind around and a green that is very close to needing a clown's mouth. I hit a sky high 9 iron to the only feasible landing spot to get at the back pin, and it fed down a slope nearly resulting in an ace. A tap in birdie on a hole where 4 is acceptable by pretty much everyone.

After 17 less than stellar holes on Saturday, I watched the rare well struck drive hit a sprinkler head, turn 90 degrees to the right and roll up against the face of a bunker. With about 1 inch of clearance, I opened up the face on a 7i and hit a 20 yard slice to about 6 feet. Thankfully, as I begged the putt to not go in the hole the ball listened and kept the perfectly ugly day in tact.
