It just me or are a lot of pros switching to Nippon Iron Shafts?

How? How is this thread still going?

Because this is a very unique shaft with different playing characteristics, not just weight. People come to the thread for information and opinions of a high quality, lesser known shaft that is difficult to find to demo. Based on information I found here I went with Modus 120TX. Since then I've been able to try Modus 130, because i traditionally liked heavier shafts, and disliked them. Very different shafts, not just weight. Balance and bend profile are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

And also because people come into the thread to make useless comments...

How did you like the 120TX, what would you compare it to?

Love the 120TX, but I may be the minority? It'sa very different shaft. I've always liked tip stiff, tip heavy shafts. Gives me a similar flight to C-taper X but with a great feel. Also, has some kick so I don't feel like I have to swing hard to make it work. Actually, the softer and smoother I swing the better it performs. Forces me to swing within myself and not out of my shoes. Can let the club do the work. Never had a problem with ballooning. Tried 125 and 130 in S in Srixon 745 demo, but just didn't seem to work as well for me. Itching to try X7's just to tinker and ho, but probably won't. Just really comfortable with 120's in my MP54's. MP55/66/5 combo sounds really good though...

There is no way to hard step a wedge so you would technically be soft stepping. It will raise the flight/launch a touch but prob not enough to make a difference. I would just pick up a 120s wedge shaft, install and butt cut. The other option that some have done is go to a 120x 8 iron and install and butt cut, this should bring the flight down and spin a touch more. If it were me I would stick with the 120s iron pitching wedge shaft if you are hitting 120s now

Does a 120 "wedge" shaft even exist? I play the 120 stiff and didn't see it on the Nippon website. I only saw references to the 105, 115, and 125. Assuming there isn't such a thing as a 120W... what's likely to be the better option for me:

  1. 120 PW stiff flex (butt trim only) as suggested above
  2. 120 8-iron in x-stiff flex(butt trim only)
  3. 125 Wedge in stiff flex
  4. Something else?

Main issue is a distance gap between my iron set's 47* PW and the rest of my wedges. 47*carries nearly 130yds while the 50* wedge goes a mere 105yds. Maybe 110yds if I try to nuke it. BTW, there's only 10yd gap between the 50* and 56*. Had lofts checked already so I'm thinking the shafts might be responsible for the distance gap.

Edit: Also want to make sure the SW is at least D4 and total weight is at least on par with most OEM specs. Makes me think a lighter shaft is a definite no go.

Yes, there is a Modus 120 wedge length shaft that matches the rest ofthe set, but there isn't a 120 weight shaft in the Modus wedge series. I personally don't like wedge specific shafts in my wedges, except maybe my lob wedge, they feel too soft and loose on full swings. I have Modus 120TX in my irons/wedges 3-LW and love them. Keep them all consistent.

I just switched from DGTIX1 to Mod3 tour 120 stiff. Night and day. i was never able to get the ball speed i was look for and the result was i was loosing a lot of distance even with my fast SS. As a WRX guy I swing pretty fast, hahaha. Anyway with the NS pro Mod3 I was able to at times produce hight than optimal ball speed on the trackman 4.0 resulting in greater distance with easier swing. Best move i have made. I only wish I tried them years ago.

Wk

How fast? The 120 play soft to flex, most people jump straight to X.

If you are familiar with trackman there is a screen where you can optimize your swing for each club which has a barometer for optimal carry. with the DGTI i was alway below the blue bar that would indicate best ball speed for the swing and now I am consistently at the top end or above it. Higher ball speed equates to greater distance. If you want to know on the mizuno shaft optimizer the 6 iron was at 92mph.

Wk

Interesting, I've been on trackman ~30 times and I've never seen that. Will have to look for it next time.

Most wedge heads are heavier so getting to d4 shouldn't be a problem. When I first built my wedges with Steel fiber 110's we got them to d7, they were a 1/2" long so I believe that is 3 SW points so without the extra length they still would have been d4 and the modus are a little heavier I believe. Getting to d4 shouldn't be a problem at all.

Personally, I'd go with the wedge length in the Modus³ 120 <shrug>

The caveat being, I'm not a particular fan of dedicated wedge shafts. ;)

If anyone is looking for a set of 125 stiff, I'm probably going to have a set of 5-PW plus three Modus 125 wedge shafts on BST in a few days. I LOVE the feel of them, but from a dispersion standpoint, they just can't knock out my Tour V 110s (which I was fit into). Wanted to give those of you who are on this thread a heads up first. If you want any info, PM me. If not, keep a eye on BST toward the middle of next week.

Or ... if you have some 130 stiffs that play +1/2 that you want to swap, I might be interested in that also.

Hello Mark,

Would love to try the 120 in stiff plus 1/2 inch. Do you still offer to send out demos? My current set is Mizuno MP 5's.

Thanks

I have the demos out, I just sent the 105X. Unfortnately don't have a 120S. I'll add it to the want list. Currently out there I have a 120X, 120TX, 125S, 125X and 105X (ST Proto.) I'm hoping to get 130S, 130X and 120S soon. (Link is in my signature to sign up!)

Question for the Nippon Guru...

I just went yesterday to try out new irons and shafts and after trying the 105, 120 125 and 130 all in stiff it looks like the 120 was the winner. Question is this, I tried the 120x in the other thread and liked it (they didn't have yesterday), I'm debating getting the 120s straight in or 120s hard stepped or possibly 120x soft stepped. Any help on which way I should go? Here's my Mizuno shaft optimizer numbers if it helps any

I have played the 120x for the last few years and it has worked very well for me. I went through a bunch of fittings/testing before I found Out about these shafts.

I really like the weight and the feel of the stiff tip in the 120x. I toyed around with 120s in a long iron just for kicks, but it felt completely different compared to the x. It felt lighter in the middle/tip of the shaft. You may be perfectly fine with the stiff based on your own testing, but I could definitely feel that the stiff was lighter feeling and less responsive for me based on playing the x.
