Ping i-e Irons?

Local shop owner told me tonight that Ping will show photos of the new i-series irons to retail accounts next week. Said they are going to be called i-e irons. This guy seems reliable in past dealings and beyond this, I know nothing.

He may get to see a photo but I've been told the new stuff won't be seen out on Tour until Greenbriar so I would doubt he'll get to take/post any photos. My best guess/opinion.

Based on a filed Ping patent, I was thinking these may have a variable thickness face to help flight the ball.

Don't know how the e fits in with that.

The I and G series have been on a different release schedule for some time now. Doubt if we see a replacement for the G-30's at this point.

Maybe the 'e' in i-e refers to eye. As in Eye 2.

I thought the same thing. The patent had variable areas of vertical face thickness as you went into the short irons to help flight the ball down.

Either way, they are going to have a hard time making significant improvements to the i20/25.

When I think variable face thickness I imagine it's thicker in the sweetspot and then thinner farther away from the center or vice versa? But I can't see how'd that help with flight?

Weight higher on the face for shorter irons to lower ball flight and lower on long irons to elevate ball flight

I think maybe the thinner face away from the sweet spot will help to retain ball speed on off centre strikes.

That can be done more effecitvely with perimeter weighting.

Now if you can use it to help correct the ball flight when you're too low or too high on the face...
