Olympics Golf: The Official Discussion Thread (merged)

there are still sports wherein winning an Olympic medal puts you at the pinnacle of your sport..

.....these would include archery, athletics, swimming, rowing, shooting, equestrian, diving, gymnastics, amateur boxing, weightlifting among others..

,many of these sports were also among the original sports included in the first Olympic games in 1896.

you may also notice that these sports do not really attract large followings or sponsorships when held by themselves meaning no real big money involved and therefore really benefit by being Olympic sports...

on the other hand sports like basketball, tennis and golf already have a large global mass base and their events are played throughout the year and they also already have their own international matches..

they already have the exposure and sponsorsjips--ie--big money--even without the games..

bottom line is the Olympics needs them more than they need the Olympics..

hence the apparent apathy when it comes to any new sport introduced...

NBC can't be too happy about that - Jason Day that is

I can't think that the coverage would be very good anyway. And with so many different events going on, I can't see them having a full, dedicated crew to cover the tourney.

They do. Peter Jacobson just said he is one of them. And since Golf Channel is owned by NBC I would assume that the golf portion would be aired there.

You get annoyed easily.

Nah not really. I just prefer 1 thread on a similar topic instead of 49281684 of them

Zika is code word for "I don't want to be shanked by hoodlums".

Just shut the Olympics down. It's not what it used to be, and it absolutely decimates any city who "wins" the right to host them, spending billions of dollars (all debt) while the poorest of poor live right outside the villages.

I'll be annoyed with myself if i watch any of the olympic golf.

I will second this. The Olympics as a whole don't really move the needle for me anymore when it comes to how to spend my time.

This is all too true. The fact that you hear nothing but stories about the corruption as to how contracts were awarded as well as hear stories of the people who get displaced for the buildings and stadiums that will probably never be used again makes is terrible. It's turned into a show of who can spend the most money, debt be damned, to show how "great" their country is all the while causing more problems for the locals and upsetting them to the point that they feel they need to lash out.

Never quite understood why golf would be in the Olympics to begin with. And with the 4 majors, plus WGC events, I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense. Regardless I think between the Zika virus and the safety concerns and the pollution in Brazil I'm not sure anyone should attend the Olympics this year. Brazil has completely messed up their infrastructure planning and I think you'll see a lot of event participants backing out as we get closer to the start. It's too bad as the Olympics are terrific and I look forward to them, but again golf really doesn't belong in them.

Read an article today, Brazil has not given Rio 860M promised, nor have the funds to complete the transportation infrastructure been released. Best case for the subway was four days before the games started, so any system glitches will have to be worked out while it is in critical use. The governor of Rio stated that without the national money, there will be no money to pay public employees, including police. The people who are competing in the open water events will be wearing anti-microbial suits to protect them from the sewage in which they will be competing. The big money competitors, basketball, golf, gymnastics, maybe swimmers, will be in luxury hotels, whisked to and from events by private transportation with an abundance of private security. Oh, and part of the bicycle course fell into the ocean/sewage lagoon. Add in the possible long term effects of an active, known viral agent, and I am amazed that anyone will go. On the bright side, the few people who have played the golf course have given it glowing reviews.

While playing for your country in the Olympics would be an amazing experience, these guys have it so good here that that outweighs Rio. The event will be like the construction crew from Major League.

Heck with the Zika fears.

I would be too paranoid to play. My wife/girlfriend/kids/coach/ whomever...is going to be either walking around without me..at the hotel with maybe some security...traveling around to/from golf course hotel etc...with or without me or security....I'm supposed to concentrate on golf...lmao...no thanks.

I never thought Golf was fit into the Olympics to begin with, for the same reasons others have already stated. I doubt it will be back. My understanding this was a trial year and it would be determined later if it stuck around. This is turning into a disaster for the "trial year'. I'm guessing it will be one and done.

Jason Day, who's current No.1, withdrew from Olympic too. I agree with them that nothing comes before their family.

However, interesting that many male golfers are withdrawing but not many female golfers are. I thought a female has somewhat more risk... Well.. you are playing in grass for a whole day for almost a whole week. I think there is a concern even if 1 golfer out of how many (300 or more) gets zika. I don't think it's worth it. Nationalism is overrated.

I got annoyed of all the new threads every time somebody WD'd from the Olympics so im creating this one for any and all news regarding golf in the Olympics.

Breaking: J Day is joining the list of notable players to WD citing concerns over the Zika virus(shocker).

I guess you find using search annoying too: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1219700-olympics-golf-the-official-discussion-thread

So Sergio and Spieth to battle it out for the gold, with whoever Brazil sends picking up the bronze?

Or so it would seem at the rate of the drop outs.

At first ... I thought all the big names in golf were acting like primadonas when they WD. They figured they were bigger than the game of golf.

Now after hearing all the reports about ZIKA and that the city has no money for the public services (sewer, fire, police, etc.) ... I'm surprised anyone is playing there.

Might be time for golf to pull the plug. The olympics is about the BEST athletes in the world competing. Not sure we are going to see this in the golf category.

They are idealistic kids. When they grow up they'll see the Olympics is a corrupt money grab that preys on idealists while funneling money to greedy committee members so their cats can live in 5000 square foot condos. And it also has many negative effects on the city lucky enough to host it.

I haven't really watched the last couple of Olympics .

The whole Olympics, not just the golf portion, seems to be shaping up to be a giant disaster. Sochi seemed to turn out OK in the end despite a lot of worry about preparations, but Rio seems miles away from being ready.

Sochi is a wasteland now. It looks like the setting of a movie that takes place 5 years after a zombie outbreak
