Most Overrated Course

Recommended Posts

Not trying to get into semantics but you did say most raynor courses. The guy didn't have that many courses to start out with. I've been fortunate to play a handful and they've all been special.

Top 3

Trump Doral Blue Monster (renovations improved it, but so blah) after awhile the whole fairway and green with rolled edges into the water gets old. I actually preferred the Red Tiger. Silver Fox was still under construction when I played.

Trump LA: More good shots rewarded with poor lies/problems than any course I have ever played

Whistling Straits (Dare I say it this week) Probably one of the worst conditioned courses I have paid so much to play. If I could get out to play it this week I might feel differently. layout and design was amazing.

I'm with you on Whistling Straits. But not due to conditioning. I thought it was in great shape when we were there last summer. I just didn't love the design. I thought it was completely overdesigned and a bit unnecessary and ridiculous at times. I thought some of the overdesigning done by Dye actually ended up taking away from the course at times. It's one of the few great golf courses (at least by ratings) that I walked away from thinking I was glad I played it once but not sure I care to play it again.

Part of this was likely due to the fact that 2 days before I played Erin Hills. Erin Hills was in better condition than WS and I thought the layout was a lot better. It was what I felt WS should be if Dye didn't go ballistic with his over designing. I absolutely loved the track. If EH had the lake views it would be a top 10 course in the country.

The second course is Harbor Town. It just isn't that good. I have played it a half dozen or some times and every time I walk away slightly disappointed. The course is always in excellent shape which is why I keep going back. It's in better condition than pretty anything else on HHI or just off the island. There are some really good holes, don't get me wrong, but, there are also a lot of pretty bland holes that are just tight, target golf. Most of them are pretty unmemorable. I love target golf, it's actually my preference as opposed to the modern open modern designs, but outside of 2 or 3 holes, this place just doesn't move the needle for me.

Maybe you just don't like Pete Dye courses. I know I don't.

That's like comparing Heidi Klum to a Hooters girl. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I don't fully comprehend your reference? Heidi Klum is pushing 50, "Hooters girl" had a lot of great representation... Haha

Heidi is an ageless classic, with all the right curves in the right places. I'd play it over and over again and never get tired.

A hooters girl is new and has a lot of (possibly) enhanced curves that you play once or twice and then look for another place to play.

Good enough for you?

The guy that stated any raynor's course.... C'MON MAN. You want an over rated course? WOLF CREEK, STREAMSONG BLUE, SHADOW CREEK,

I've never played a raynor course I haven't liked, even with average conditions.

I didn't say I didn't like Raynor courses, I do. Just think many are overrated. Yale, YH and Chicago are among my favorite courses. NGLA is a fun day. Fishers is a pretty place. Just not convinced every template course is a top100.

I haven't played Yale, YH or Chicago but National (credited to CBM although Raynor supervised construction) and Fisher's are amongst my favorite courses I have played. Carmargo and Mid Ocean are also wonderful. Also, yes, I realize that RTJ modified Mid Ocean.

I would take a Mike Stranz course over a Raynor any day of the week.

yale is special. outside of 18, which does feel forced, the first 17 is as good as it gets.

For example:

Mountain Lake-Nice course, great place and is in the Golf Magazine Top 100. I don't consider it a Top 100, ditto CC of Fairfield. Thus overrated. Raynor has some lesser known courses that are average. Though his best are really good.

and I would take raynor over strantz/dye/fazio anyday. they are over designed

I feel like a lot of template holes on Raynor's are "forced" in the land and somewhat abrupt to the surroundings.

While were at it most of Tom Doak's courses are overrated as well.

Definitely different strokes for different folks. I definitely agree with doak. No argument here with that.

There's only one course where I "might" agree with you, and that's MPCC. It's close to a tie. Bulls Bay, Tobacco Road, Royal New Kent, etc., are interesting, but not courses I'd want to play every day. MPCC, on the other hand, is an absolute work of art. The only knock on that course are the non-ocean holes to and from the clubhouse, but that's because they are bland in comparison to the oceanside holes.

Nothing wrong with that.. I just hate when people get all pissed and angry over which courses/ designers are better.. They have different courses/ designs/ designers for everyone to enjoy. My favorite Stranz would probably be Caledonia.. Or at least of the ones I have played.

I played great on the front side at Tobacco to -1 and then a solid 43 on the back. I did enjoy it but it was probably a one time only course for me.

Confirmation that I closed the Golf Club Atlas page on my browser and opened GolfWRX...

Streamsong blue. I live an hour there and played there probably more than handful times. Garbage over designed. No need to go on internet.

Torrey Pines South. Been there done that for me. And I didn't have to pay much as it was a tournament.

Wolf Creek in Mesquite. I live 30 minutes from it and it is a "Once a year" type of course for me. It is fun to take people there for the first time though. Not unlike taking them to an Amusement Park.

PGA West Stadium. I used to play it a couple of times every summer for free when I lived in Palm Springs and there is no way I'd pay the $$ they charge for it.

Have to agree with you on TPC Stadium! The history is cool and all, but it seems like they are really riding the novelty these days. That and the pace of play is horrible. I've played twice, and both time the starter let groups off tee boxes they had no business being on. The first was a group of 50+ ladies off a set of tees playing 5700 yards. Thanks for the 6 hour round sir! Lol

I'll add on here. Medinah #3 - I can play it whenever I want so maybe that has something to do with it but it's just boring. Every hole is a dogleg left and nothing very memorable beyond #2, a par 3 over water. This place has an amazing clubhouse and facility, a tremendous staff, the course is impeccable- just boring. It only gets the events because it has the space for the crowds and cars.

Think about MOST PGA tour venues. They're boring. But, they have the space for the tents, the crowds and the cars. That's why they get the events.

I've yet to play a course that I thought was overrated, but I think that's partly because I don't let my expectations get the best of me. I went into playing Sherwood for the first time just excited to be on the grounds, not even worrying about what the golf would be like. It was one of the most fantastic golf experiences I've had in my life and I didn't even play up to my standards. I've yet to play Pebble, but I already know going in to expect slow play and most likely some fog shrouding the views in the morning. I think the important thing for a course like that is just to take it all in. "This is where Jack, Tom, Tiger, and many greats have hit memorable shots" is what I'll tell myself and not worry that I paid $500 just to walk a few miles over grass. That being said I'm really looking forward to playing Poppy Hills as I know the General Manager and he really talks it up after the new renovation.

Over rated:

1. Harbor Town - hate this track, i mean whats the attraction. OK, I was flailing that day and hit some condo's but thats not a golf course.

2. Tobacco road - a lot of hype, maybe fun for a match play event

3. Troon North

Under Rated

1. Nicklaus course at Palmetto Bluff - expensive but worth the trip

2. Reese Jones' Oconee course at Reynolds

3. Mid Pines - classic ross, maybe better than #2

Best michigan Golf

1. Crystal Downs

2. Oakland Hills

3. Forest Dunes
