I know where you are coming from there. Sometimes trees are part of the initinal course design then they mature and can make a hole difficult if not impossible to play. My old course (closed since 2019) the 18th hole was like that. There was a tree that interfered with the approach. When the course was newer it was there but made you think to play the hole. As the tree matured it made the hole too difficult to play. Basiclly if you hit a good drive it left you 140 or 150 into a elevated green. You had to usually take a 5 iron and run it up which could be tricky. The other option was go down the left side that with a good drive left you 175 180 over a water hazard which was all carry. Finally they did cut the tree down and that made the hole playable. LOL the course closed a year later.

We have a course here that was once a top 50 muni in the country. It's called Lagoon Park

and is owned by the City of Montgomery. Over the years when I played it,  they just let

the trees grow and grow until they were overhanging the fairways and casting too much

shade on the greens.....and fairways.

 

It got so bad that you could hear balls hitting the trees around the course as you stood on

some of the tee boxes. It sounded like a woodpecker refuge.

 

Eventually, as the fairways were shrinking and the greens started dying they finally had to

start a tree removal program to save the course.

 

I have not played the course in many years but I do visit the range there sometimes. The

course looks pretty busy so it must be a lot better than it was. It's a shame what they let

happen to that course. Maybe I'll go play there some day soon and she what shape the

course is in these days.

 

EDIT: I see they are now part of the Troon group and bragging about the course, lol.

Perhaps I'll play a round there in the next few months.

Thanks.  I suppose I knew that southern courses use different grasses than what we use up north, but it's still a bit of a shock to see everything completely brown like it had been hit with paraquat!

 

For lawns, we typically use a blend of Kentucky Blue, perennial rye and fescue.  Sod is straight Kentucky Blue, but that is very tough to maintain once laid as it requires irrigation and multiple applications of fertilizer annually, so it tends to revert to native species.  I suspect that is reflective of golf course makeup.  

 

My understanding is that poa is used for greens up here more often than not.

We have a problem here with poa invading the Bermuda greens. When it gets out of hand the

greens get very bumpy, because poa grows so fast,  and eventually need to be re-done.

 

When I lived out west, Bermuda was considered a weed and many greens are poa annua. Here

in the southeast, poa annua is the weed and the greens are Bermuda.

 

I should have mentioned before that the greens are not overseeded in the cold season. As

@Soloman1 mentioned, they are sprayed green. The dormant Bermuda is still a much better

surface to putt on than any other cold weather alternatives.

Thank you Conrad, DMM, and Solomon for your explanations on the different kinds of turf. I wanted to respond yesterday but never got around to it. I find different turf on the various area courses that I play.

First photo is of BFCC 's 11th green and fairway that I took this past Sunday morning. The fairways at BFCC are zoysia and the greens are bent.  

Second photo is from Links O Tryon that I played yesterday. Both the greens and the fairways on that track are Bermuda. 

This afternoon I am playing a course that will have bent fairways and greens and still have nice green color. I will share a few photos. It varies around here.

This is what I would expect to see end of February or early March after the snow had melted.  I think that it's the out of season nature of the turf that has me shocked compared to our own.

OK, well this is post is taking a wide tangent, just for something completely different.

 

There is a group in Japan called Wagakki Band. Wagakki means traditional instrument, so it's the "traditional instrument band."

 

They've been around for a while. These young people have melded Japanese traditional instruments/masks from old theater/traditional enka style singing and clothing with hard rock. They're all accomplished musicians independently, but their music together is incredibly tight.

 

Anyway, it's worth a listen once to appreciate the musicianship, even if it's the first and last time to listen. 🙂

I got about 45 holes in with mine and they are as good as advertised. I don't play good golf in crappy conditions but I hit enough good shots to know I'm very excited for next season to get here. Enjoy your new sticks!

WOW, they are really good!!

 

I'm sitting here with my morning coffee, all chill, and that woke me right up, in a good way.

They are very tight indeed. The first half of the song was so upbeat and catchy it had my

full attention, after the short intro.

 

The 2nd half of the song, with singing and the traditional Japanese instruments added, 

was an adventure. I'm not familiar with that style of singing, or with the added instruments,

but I had the distinct impression I was watching a masterful performance. The audience 

was certainly swept away.

 

Thanks for posting this and please feel free to post some more of their works when the

desire hits you.
