Taylormade Spider Tour Putters

Well I got to 54 holes before the first bit of white started showing on the face. Question now is do I take it back to my pro or just ignore it considering I’m averaging 28.5 putts per round with it?

I spoke to the TM rep yesterday (at the Farmers Insurance) who was by the new Spider putters on the practice green and asked about why all the displayed putters were red. He said that TM is pushing hard on the color red and that black is not their main focus. They said they still have the Spider Tour Black for sale but will not have a heavy focus. Having tried both, I'm more partial to black but I guess the mass audience has gravitated more to the red.

the softer insert on the black model is what they should offer... not a huge fan of the red, but prefer the softer insert.

I have had JD for awhile and it has chipped a bunch and I take care of my stuff very well. Just a fact on this beast. I dont care! It makes everything!

Has yours chipped on the face? Any impact on the performance? I’m disappointed mine has chipped after just three rounds and I’ve been so careful with it, but I’ve never putted so well and I’m loathe to take it back!

Am I wrong, but didn't the 2017 spiders have aluminum pure roll inserts?

The specs on the 2018 spiders is showing pure roll inserts that are "surlyn" on the red and grey models and "firm surlyn" on the black model.

3 different inserts in 2017; the Platinum (face balanced model) insert was the firmest, the black DJ model next firmest and the JD red model the softest.

Not sure about all the different ones coming out shortly but I believe the black DJ remains the same and the others all have the JD (softest) insert EXCEPT for the Platinum face balanced which I believe is unchanged.

Newest feature, and the one I really like, is the addition of the plumber's neck model which is much closer to face balanced that the DJ or JD models (with the flange). Of course, that neck isn't offered in the DJ black. [groan]

Ok, so I’ve just picked up one of the new Black Tour Double Bend versions and the normal TM wrench for MWT's (ie the ones that used to work with the R series drivers, the original Spiders and also fit the sleeve screw) does not fit the new ones (it’s too big). Anyone got any ideas what size these new versions are?

It’s only one or two sizes smaller. I took my putter into a hardware store and found the one I needed.

The weights use the tool as the old R series drivers like the R7 driver.

No they don’t - they’re too big. The weights on the new putters require a smaller torx bit.

Was able to roll the Center Shaft Spider last week and really liked it. So easy to align and get the ball rolling. Many of the Red Spider's look "closed" to me but this one looked good.

What are the thoughts on the "Pure Roll" insert on the Spider Red ?

I been a Scotty milled face player and struggled when I would try a Odyssey insert. But my initial impression when I tried a Spider Tour Red it seems different than the Odyssey inserts.

What has been the experiences with the Pure Roll in terms of feel (I know subjective), consistency across the insert (which Odyssey doesn't have for me), distance control from various lengths, etc.

Thanks for feedback.

My experience with the Pure Roll insert was it was a little too soft for my liking. This effected my distance control, especially in lag putting. I prefer a firmer feel. The Spider Tour Black insert is more to my liking and I was able to control the distances better when I experienced it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hate to admit I rolled the rock very well with the DJ black 2017 model

Honeymoon possibly

Only thing I didn’t like was I thought the ball skidded a good bit , but the distance control and accuracy didn’t suffer; granted putting on artificial surface

Less skid ; length , loft , or technique adjustment ?

Anyone bought one of the Platinum Crank Neck versions yet?

Had a roll with one today and was very impressed with it, previously had the original red slant neck version but a bit too much toe hang for me. Not a fan of the newer red colour so tempted by this.

Also, does anyone know what finish is on these putters? I preferred the blank crown on the red spider so would like to remove the black sightline on the platinum version assuming I buy it, would using Acetone etc remove any finish on these?

Thanks!

Yes I had a SAM fitting and this was the model that gave me superb stats out of all putters, and I tried lots, including the red and black spiders. I put a great stroke on it and my alignment is significantly improved, just need to work on distance on long putts but that me not the putter. Interestingly, despite what I read, I remain 100% convinced it’s an alloy insert in this thing. Don’t like it’s looks but like everything else and have committed to it for 2018

I played the spider tour black all of last year. From the moment I picked one up at my local shop, it just felt right. I had a great season using it. The club ho in me picked up a bettinardi queen bee and a odyssey highway 101 #7 putter late last year. I've always wanted to try the #7 shape and got a great deal one. Haven't rolled a bettinardi before and it's gorgeous, got an amazing deal on that one as well. Played the bettinardi for just a few weeks last year to try it out, love it. But I put the spider back in cause it sinks putts. Have played the odyssey for all of this new year and it's a great putter. But I was clearly not putting as well as when I had the spider in bag. Yesterday I benched the #7 and took the trusty spider back out. This putter just works. It suits my eye, the block shape just puts putts on line. It's back in the bag! I haven't sold the other putters and I won't. I like trying new stuff......cause it's fun. I'm gonna get a Newport style again sometime this year, thinking a Byron or an old school Scotty.....but the spider, for now is my go to. Such a good putter!
