Someone's lyin' about their golf game when they....

Recommended Posts

I've mentioned my handicap on here for context on occasion or when relevant to some story, but outside of league where someone may ask because they haven't looked at the card, I can count on one hand in decades how many times someone has asked me what my handicap is, just doesn't seem to come up in conversation. Always surprising to me how much it does in other places/situations for other people.

I feel like I see so many very low digit singles in people's avatars, and to maintain you wouldn't be on this site as the 1-3 caps I know are out grinding to the point the last thing they would be doing is writing novels on WRX

*and some of their posts i.e. "2 stroke penalty in the water" seems like a straight up lie, yet I'd a single....if wasn't playing that way for years that person would be scratch or better....not buying it.

Anybody have a spare Rosetta stone? I have no idea what this says

What don’t you understand? Maybe you need “hooked on Phonics;)” Read the topic posted recently I described by a one handicap who thought hitting in water was a 2-stroke penalty (would you believe an almost scratch golfer doesn’t understand the basic rules?). And other point seems he who makes the most posts on WRX has lowest handicap OR is a 2,3,4 etc, which I do t think is attainable behind a pc screen all day. Therefore I think their caps aren’t true. Making one a liar. Get it?

I got the topic you were referencing, but I'm pretty sure the OP in that thread had is handicap listed as a nine (I know that because I commented that I found it strange a single digit wouldn't know that rule). There was some talk in there later that the OP may have even been listing a nine hole handicap from his league.

But anyway, as to the low singles posting a lot, I'm sure many do a lot of their WRXing while at work. And their grinding at the game after work.

Interesting that most of these posts are about braggarts who are full of it and can't play worth a lick.

At our club it's the opposite. Most downplay their abilities and try (very stealthily and creatively) to keep their handicaps up...lol!

I hated to have to post yesterday's round. It's going to cost me a stroke at next weekends 2 man best ball tournament.

The best round is one where you post a high enough score to not lower the cap, but still make money(I know I'm going to catch flak for that, but just like you referenced DPB, it's very common)!

I know a handful of guys that only play weekend golf (work through the week) that are scratch or better. They all grew up playing the game competitively.

I'm not that low (mine went up during the winter) and I post here only during work hours during the week :)

Still have plenty of time to play and practice.

Edit: as for the guys that lie, for me it's always the guys telling me how far they hit it before we ever play a round. It's rare that I talk golf with someone that isn't 20 to 50 yards longer than me off the tee.

First, its "hooked on Phonics" ;). The quote goes inside punctuation, the emoticon isn't part of the hooked on phonics title. You may need to grab a copy of Hooked on Grammar.

Second, in my first tournament, I asked the guys I played with if I could clear the sand off the green between my ball on the hole. Knowing a voluminous rulebook and being able to swing 110 mph while maintaining spine angle arn't the same thing.

I assume "do t" is "don't". It gets dark here at around 815 pm, and my club (TPC Louisiana) doesn't close until 8p. I start at 7 am so I can be out at 3p and then play late. I don't make it to 8pm every night, but 2-3 hours every day is more than enough time to maintain a low single digit. I'm not sure where you are from, but not everywhere has a golf "season" and, at least here, we can play for 3-5 hours after work lets out most days, and we can play 12 months a year.

Also I live in New Orleans so most of the time nobody really cares if you show up to work or not. If you decide to go in, that's just lagniappe. I grew up in new england and I imagine maintaining a low cap would be much, much more difficult up there (golf six months a year and even then its dark at 630).

Not sure I can agree with all of this. I play with lots of +2-3 caps and they don't work on their game much (anymore). The were great junior players, played in college but now are working etc. They play 1 - 3 times a week, don't practice but can still go low often enough to stay around scratch. Our club champ is ridiculously good - shoots mid 60's allot but is too busy to golf and gets out 25 times per year. Anyhow I don't think it fair to say you have to be out grinding constantly to be a sub 3 handicap.

Then I also play with some scratch guys that LOVE golf, play all the time, grind like crazy, can't break 80 and when they are not on the course, they are posting here despite all the time they put into the game.

...when you see their driver and it has momentous crown marks, but yeah, you hear how they bomb it...in fifteen years, JP has never had a crown mark on any wood...

That's funny..... i just found a JP signature edition TM SLDR TP 430 10* on ebay with a crown mark on it..... must be a fake..... I'll have to report the seller.......

Question: celebrity handicaps - like the ones you see at AT&T Pebble Beach - I feel like a lot of them are super exaggerated, no?

Vanity Handicap Central!

Maybe not all of them. Just about anybody is going to have trouble shooting around their cap in front of camera's, fans and on a tour prepped course. Then most of the guys play 70% of their rounds on one course, meaning their cap likely does not travel well.

Play a course occasionally that has a character named "Dewsweeper Dave", he's about 65 yrs old and is off at the crack of dawn by himself. Iʻve played with him before ( joined him on the back 9 ) he didn't break 50. Of course he doesn't remember me from Adam, so the other morning i'm parked beside him and he's putting his clubs in his trunk and he say's " almost shot my age today, buddy", iʻm thinking " dam* this must be 106 yrs old" good for him. s m h

That's true 2b. But there are also plenty of them that you can tell just by watching them swing. Didn't Berman come in at an 18 a couples years back(not sure, but thought I remember that being the case)?

I'm sure there are plenty of baggers too.

I will never understand why people would fabricate falsehoods about their golf games. They know what they are saying isn't true.

When you ask a golfer how good he is he will you how good he thinks he should be given his time and money investment, because that's how he measures it in his own head. He isn't lying. Your just using score as a metric whereas he is using effort and practice time not realizing that, to quote snoop dog, deserve ain't got s*** to do with it.

That's hilarious. Just using a different metrics. I've gotta use that line in things other than golf.

Berman has a bad swing but actually plays to about a 16, hits it all over the place but can putt well. Caddied during a pro-am and he was in the group I caddied for so I got a good sense for his game.

Are you saying you need a good looking swing to be an 18? :taunt:

I think the majority of 8-20 handicap gofers at most private clubs have an ugly or bad swing (some more than others). They just play enough to to know what it does most of the time.(or least enough times to get their top 10 rounds in)

The other thing about the PB pro-am is the have a special tournament formula to calculate handicaps. I think it brings most people down a stroke or two lower than they would be.

But I do agree, they have their share of true Hollywood Handicaps and a few baggers for good measure.

They are lying when they start talking/bragging about hitting it 300 yards with their driver....

Everyone I have ever played with that actually hits it over 300 yards doesn't ever talk about it, they just do it. Most of these guys wind up bitching about their putting though! Ha!

When they.... only start missing shots when they have the match/game/hole closed out.

I never quite understand why people get so uptight about people lying about their game from the other direction (better than they really are).

I agree. The only person losing is the vanity capper. If they want to gamble their money away on their low HC be my guest. Daddy always needs a new pair of shoes! A sandbagger on the other hand, they deserve no quarter.
