Callaway Epic Pro Iron In Hand Pics w/ comparison to Apex, PXG's, Srixon & Mizy

yah the same guy is hitting the tour M1 7iron 220 yards so I think its mainly he is just a power hitter. That said I was going to order a second set of Apex irons to leave at my club as I want to leave one at home (where I practice) I called my fitter and he simply added $500 to my bill to upgrade to the Epic irons since my Apex were going to take 2 weeks anyway..

And you were ok with him charging you $500 more for irons you didn't ask for?!? Your Apex were only a 2 week wait, but I read above these are available for preorder June 2nd.

I think it's weird there are no reviews yet.

Stupid. It's an iron folks. It goes how far irons with the same loft go. And it looks ridiculous. And its price is ridiculous. If it feels and looks good to you and you don't mind paying the price, play it. But if you honestly believe its going to do anything different than other irons, then just go ahead and trade in your PXGs, or your C16s, or whatever, and have at it.

Oh looky there:

Same guy demo-ing the P750, which is 3 degrees lower lofted and a quarter inch shorter and hitting it just about 1 club less. Interesting that he was about to scorch his shorts over the results with the Epic 7 iron, which is essentially just a P750 6 iron.

I'm as much of a club ho as anybody, but just admit it: all you're buying is newness and looks. This has the newness, it does not have the looks. It's all good if you want it, but I'm sick of hearing about tech and improvements etc. etc. etc.

Today's clubs are better than the clubs from 20 years or even 10 years ago. Granted, the performance benefits that can be gained in the space of one new release may be minimal, but a culture of 'innovation' will undoubtedly drive genuine, measurable improvements over a longer period of time.

Also, if you hit the centre of the face with any kind of regularity then of course it will be difficult for you to see any discernible performance differences from club to club if you were to hit every manufacturer's latest offering.

However, not many people on here will admit it but most people don't hit the centre of the face with any kind of regularity. Those people now have the option of using a club that has a 'better player's' profile that performs as well as a Super GI shovel. That wasn't always the way and selecting a set of golf clubs often involved a compromise.

Personally, I am glad that manufacturers keep trying to improve because who knows where we might be in 20 years time?

Amazing how many people judge clubs on what color they are or the looks of the parts of the club that have nothing to do with performance. Not to mention, ripping a club that they have never hit. Funny.

Not judging at all. I don't care whether the Epic Pro voted Dem or Rep and it's not place to question why Epic Pro keeps an apartment downtown, while Mrs. Epic Pro and the kids live out in the burbs.

But one thing I will say - is based on the pics - those are awful looking irons. Cannot think of a 2016/2017 iron that looks worse.

I would nominate the PXG particularly the oversized shovel model, also in there is the Miura Genesis. C16s qualify also as you can see the back of the 4 and 5 iron at address..

I would again remind people there was no wood before and since that was uglier than the ping TISI. Funny how performance overcomes looks.

So, local course had a Callaway demo going on. I stopped by the tent before my league started. The rep had an epic pro 6 iron I believe. This club looks so much better in person. Love the shape and minimal offset. had time to hit 3 shots with the stock stiff shaft. First impression was it felt a little click. Second impression was it wanted to go high and straight. I'd to spend a little more time with it too see how it plays, but just didn't have the time.

Moral of the story, give it a chance it may surprise you.

I had a chance to hit the hybrid and both the Epic and Epic Pro irons yesterday.

I would have to say, the Pros do look darn good in person vs. pics. Also, the std. Epic irons look plenty good from address.

Feel: Pro was not harsh at all, but did feel hard (I hit this one before the std.) Felt powerful. The std. version felt WAAAAAAAAY better, but the look isn't as clean as the Pro, obviously.

If these are marketed to steal PXG buyers, I would say that won't happen. The STD Epic version is a very nice feeling iron, and looks good at address.

I think with the Epic driver having such a following right now (flying off the racks), and people that purchased that, and are still in love might give these a go. They do look really nice in person.

Epic 3/4-iron and Epic Pro 5-PW would be an interesting combo.

Assuming the Epic Pros will compete with the PXGs and T-MB. It would be nice if they had a 2-iron in the set (like the T-MBs) but obviously with a 19* 3-iron that's pretty tough.

Very interested to see how these are if at all picked up on tour. I'm guessing maybe a long iron or two. Hybrids seem very solid, an updated BBA 815 that Pet Perez is using.

Posting this in the other thread as well:

After further testing....I'm blown away by these. The regular epic irons look a lot like the CF16 Apex although shorter heel to toe and SLIGHTLY thicker. The Pros are perfection in my opinion. It's killing me I can't get my hands on a set. When I do I'll be comboing regular Epic 5,6,7 and Pro 8,9,PW. They are just so easy to hit, and feel so good.

Once you have a chance to hold and hit these lines, it's pretty easy to get over the cavity. Obviously there's the price factor as well, but if you go 5-PW that's $1,500. Still expensive but not near other premium lines. The long irons in both are really impressive and the pro short irons are solid. Still more testing to see how the gaps will marry up when doing a combo set.

Had no intentions of hitting the Epic Pro today when I stepped in the shop for a fitting on Trackamn. I was honest with the guy and said it would be a hard sell because I don't think they look great and I know they carry a higher price point.

I asked for a blind test where I wouldn't look at what head and shaft combo I was hitting. We started with TM 770 with recoil 110 and it was ok but nothing great. Hit every PXG head with a variety of shafts and I was unimpressed. Which was a shame as I was looking forward to those the most. I know in between I hit an Epic Pro and it didn't do anything for me either.

So he hands me a Ping i200 and I hit it well. KBS 120 shaft with smash at 1.46 and highest ball speeds I've seen yet at 118 for a 7 iron. For reference my gamer set is 765 with LZ 6.0 and I wasn't getting over 116 ball speed today. The Ping felt surprisingly good. I actually had no idea it was a Ping club and figured he gave me the TM forged club again. It felt that good. Dispersion was great too.

Then he hands me another club and I knew it was the Epic Pro again and asked me to hit it. This time it was with a Steelfiber 95. 1.49 smash factor and 121 ball speed. I kept hitting it and hitting it. Got to 1.50 twice and didn't dip below a 1.46. Was pleasantly surprised on one shot that I immediately said felt a little toe ish. Then the screen pops up 1.49 smash factor again. And these were dead online too. For the rest of the session I alternated between i200 and Epic Pro with the Epic clearly having the better numbers.

I'm gonna go back and do more testing but the Epic is definitely in play. Going to hit standard Epic as well and if I pull the trigger it will be STD in 4/5 and Pro 7-W. the Epic Pro looked by far the best at address of any of the clubs I hit. The Epic Pro felt good at contact. Not forged soft, but crisp and powerful. I got the feeling that the ball jumps off the face more on Epic Pro than i200 if that makes sense.

I had him measure the loft after and the Ping was 2 degrees weaker and a hair longer. Could account for some of the ball speed variance. But not dispersion. Both were good but Epic Pro was outstanding on dispersion. Wish I would have had him measure Lie as I'm hoping the Ping was flatter (I need upright) and accounts for the smash factor difference. Base specs say Ping is more upright so it might blow that theory out of the water. And unfortunately they didn't have a Steelfiber to test in the Ping.

So, very encouraging. The Epic Pro wasn't even on my radar. The price really doesn't bother me but the badging still does. I hate to be petty but if they just had a cleaner badge it would really help the decision. It would be about a $100 per club difference, assuming Steelfiber is the shaft. I hope to head back Saturday for another round of Trackman testing and include the standard Epic. They'll also let me take them out so I hope to test them outside as well.

Well, I guess not much I did not know on the detail pages, although I was surprised to see the DGX7 as a shaft option for the irons.

I will most likely just grab a 4H with the stock recoil. Any difference between the stock 780 recoil, listed under "stock", and the 2 780 Recoil options under "custom" - regular/black, or is one just silver, and the other black?

I have a Diamana S+ 80 in my 815 4H now, love the shaft, so will just use it if I don't like the Recoil, no need to turn into a $400 hybrid. Plus, it's not a T800....lol.

I am afraid that would be too light for the hybrid, but can't say I did not think about it.

I am sure the Recoil is a fine shaft, if not Diamana is in.
