Ping G400 Drivers

Well...

I went to a demo day in March of this year. They had Callaway, TM and Ping. The G400 was not out yet, so I focused on the M1, M2 and Epic drivers. I took my gamer with me (Callaway GBB.. the one Hideki plays).

I am a 2 handicap. My SS is 106 and I hit a low ball (grew up in wind).

After hitting both TM and Callaway both told me they could not improve on my GBB numbers. Even though I play my GBB at 44.5", it was longer than the other drivers I tried.

They had another demo day here last weekend. I really went looking for wedges, but thought... Oh... haven't hit the G400... let me give it a bash.

Long story short, I was BLOWN AWAY by the driver. Long... straight bombs, with a noticeably better (higher) trajectory.

Funny thing was I did not even realize I was hitting the SFT model. I picked it up because it had 12* of loft. It was only when I placed the order that I realized it was the SFT model. I didn't even realize PING only made the 12* in the SFT.

The SFT did exactly what the name suggested. It went straight. Every time. It was spectacular. I tried the HAZRDUS Yellow 6.0 as well, but the X-Torsion was higher flight, and felt incredible.

I got my 12* G400 SFT with Copper X-Torsion last night. Can't wait to hit it tonight.

They make the SFT in a 10* head too....I had one earlier this year....actually getting ready to sell my LST head and pick up another SFT.

And if you need it a bit lower loft still you can do like I did and request digitally lofted to 9.5* ... might take a bit longer for them to find the head for you but it was worth it to me.

Just got around to watching Rick Shiels' video on the last 5 years of Ping drivers. He really liked the Ping G20. It is a great club: perfect feel and plenty of pop. The G400 gave him a few MPH of club speed, but very little changed in that regard over 5 years. That's the case with a number of manufacturers even though the Titleist 917 gave him the best ball speed numbers from what I can tell.

The Titleist video was rigged. You will notice that on average his SS was almost 3 MPH faster than on the test videos he did with PING, Callaway, and TM. I posted the example below.

He has done these shenanigans (jacking his SS numbers to jack distances). Last time it was when he reviewed the 2017 TM M2 drivers. If you normalize the SS numbers, you can come to the same conclusion everyone does.

TITLEIST DRIVERS ARE THE SHORTEST OF ALL DRIVERS.

There is a reason Titleist can't sell drivers anymore. They just don't perform.

BTW: Love Rick... but the dude is not the brightest spark. If you watch the PXG driver review... he "struggles" to subtract 2.5 from 10. But he has a nice swing... bless his soul.

He may have just been swinging better that day. Not a Titleist driver fan, they are nice, but I lose distance with them. They usually never finish well when that other spy site has done independent tests. If I remember correctly there was a year or two Titleist didn't participate or didn't want to.

I don’t know if it’s preference but I guess some people just like that Hollow metallic sound I mean the new 400 hands down has the best most aggressive sound in a driver that I’ve used in years and I mean I usually buy every new driver that comes out, the 400 is by far I think the best driver ping has ever made! I can’t believe how many of the tour players out there using Ping equipment are still using the old G 30 or the G driver

I'm not sure if I would trust it over 18 holes, but I hit the LST with the Tour shaft in X-Flex yesterday and put up numbers I've never seen.

How much better were these numbers then your current gamer?

25 yards over the Ping G SFTec with the Stiff Alta in my bag. 15 yards over the G400 with a Tour Stiff I won and sold earlier this fall.

The practical side of me says, I hit the Ping G 260 to 270 and I don't worry about losing one off the tee anymore. The dumb macho side of me wants to be busting drivers 300 yards.

Unless he changed in the last month this was just on WRX in September

So I've read a few posts asking for an updated WITB on Bernhard Langer. I found this information on a German website. No pictures, but oh well. It's dated September 25, 2017.

Driver: Adams SpeedLine Fast 12 LS (8,5 Degree)

3 Wood: Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic (15 Degree)

Hybrids: Adams Idea Pro (18 and 22 Degree)

Irons (4 and 5): Ben Hogan Apex Forged

Irons (6 thru 8): Adams Idea Pro Black MB

Irons (9 and Pitching Wedge): TaylorMade RSi Forged

Wedges: TaylorMade Milled Grind (56, 60 Degree)

Putter: Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball (Long)

Ball: Titleist Pro V1

Looks like he's updated a couple of things. Enjoy.

I am not sure if this has already been posted, but I think it is good information for those debating between G400 and G400 LST.

https://www.milesofgolf.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Ping-G400-Fitting-Overview.pdf

My findings exactly.....traded my 10 LS for the standard 9 head and tweaked it down .6 For me it is much more forgiving and longer than the LS. BTW same tour 65 shaft in both.

Anyone playing a g400 with a graphite design ad shaft? Thoughts? Thanks

Bernhard Langer has I believe got (his usual) AD-DI, but in black, in his G400. I'm pretty sure that driver is gonna make a good sized chunk of money over the next few weeks ;) .

I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong I’m watching the playoff right now and you were right they pulled the head cover off, not a ping cover and it was the 400 so I guess he is playing Ping.

Does anyone have thoughts on as to what head to get if playing at 9.5-10 degree loft in the regular G400. Are there any advantages or disadvantages of lofting up or down. I know lofting up in the 9 degree up will slightly close the face and vice versa in the 10.5 degree. Just wondered if other things like spin rate would be equal at same loft with either head. Thanks

Get a 9.0 but have it digitally lofted to 9.5 as it only cost $25 to do so.

I’m genuinely interested - how would changing the loft by .6 degrees add 1.4 mph of swing speed?

I think those club speed numbers are B.S. I don't see how a minor adjustment to the loft is going to increase the club speed 1%. It's likely Scott was simply swinging harder. I guess it's possible that the clubhead aligns slightly off from square, and caused additional turbulence. They don't mention if the numbers are the best swing for each club, or the average (with the worst swings removed).

I've hit both. SS is 95-98. Preferred the 9 at '0' or small '-' than the 8.5 turned up small '+'.

Everyone is different.

They said that Scott was struggling to hit a draw with his gamer. Increasing the loft 0.6 degrees on the LST would have adjusted the club face from slightly open to neutral or slightly closed. That would generally help with the draw.
