Famous People you ran into during a round of Golf...

Here's a couple.

#1. Back in the early to mid 70's (hazy now as the days go by!) my kid sister and I were camping with our family at Henry Horton State Park in Chapel Hill, TN. I was maybe 15 years old and my sister was 12. I was already totally in love with the game of golf and we talked our parents into letting us go to the park golf course to play. We rented a cart, clubs for the sis and proceeded to act like idiots, especially with the cart. It was early, the dew was plentiful and my sister was driving and threw me outta' the cart once with a bat-turn to the left when she sighted her ball. I did my best Superman impersonation and must have slid 15 feet on my face.

We were standing on the par 3 number 16 tee and these 2 other carts come bombing up. This guy pops out, walks over to me, shakes my hand and says, "Hey, how ya' doing, I'm Hubert Green, mind if we play through?" I says sure, moron that I am wondering who the hell Hubert Green is. He flipped his cigarette on the ground, drops a ball and proceeds to flop it to within 4 or 5 feet. Amazing. The rest of his four-some plays to the green in almost similar fashion, Hubert thanks us with a flourish, shakes my hand again, and they're gone. Cool as hell. I've always wondered who the other cats were he was playing with.....

#2. In the early 80's, not nearly the neophyte golf-wise that I was back in the 70's, I was playing regularly at Harpeth Hills in Nash-Vegas on Sunday mornings with a my buddy Tommy who had a regular early tee time. He always just booked 2 slots for us and knew the starter well and the starter would usually group us with another 2-some that was cool. I was on the putting green and Tommy comes up and says, I got us a pair of guys to play with, lets go. Get to the 1st tee and it's Faron Young (Hello Walls) and his bus driver. We had a freaking ball. He was full of stories, as you might imagine. Played pretty well too. Insisted on buying beers and hot-dogs at the turn. Both were totally great guys. We were lucky enough to get to play with them 4 different times over the summer. Made my mom crazy. Was really saddened to hear of his suicide in 1996.

What a great story, thanks for sharing. Faron Young was one of my favorite country singers. The stories of him and Merle Kilgore living together are legendary.

Hit balls on the range in Tampa next to Roger Clemens, Andy Pettite and Jason Grimsley.

Played with Bill Parcells and Dan Henning a few times. Really nice guys.

Years ago as I was getting in my car at Edgewood in Tahoe, Bo and John Derek along with Loni Anderson and some guy were getting out of their car next to us. The then gf shrieked "thats......" and O mentioned that Im sure they are well aware of who they are. Said hi and moved on.

Thanks for not mentioning me by name as "the other guy", I like to keep my anonymity, but it was nice to meet you also! Loni was a great date that night, and acted like a perfect lady even though she kept getting calls from Burt Reynolds all night?

I'd keep calling too, if I had her #......lol

Did you really put Orel Hershiser higher on your list than Tiger Woods? How did you come to play with all these people?

They are not listed in any particular order. The people with UCLA ties I played with are because I am an alum and booster. Some of the Dodgers are from my relationship with Todd Zeile, although Hershiser and Newcombe were a random pairing. Woods, Na and Stockton were in local am tournaments. Harrison and the Byrum are relatives. Everyone else is just random happenstance.

How about Goydos? He seems like a good dude.

He is a great guy. Check out the comments I made about him a post or two up page.

Paul was at Olympic a few months ago playing with a lady friend before the Champion's event at Pebble. It was early and I spent twenty minutes on the range talking with him. He was super friendly and very eager to talk with everyone who approached him. I had taken my spot on the range before I noticed that he was right behind me. I noticed hearing about 20 perfect strikes in a row and had to turn around and see who it was. A very nice and totally blue collar kind of guy.

Goydos is so cool. He still turns up at the weekly skins game at Eldorado in LBC from time to time.

How does Orel get top billing above Tiger?

Just random recall, no particular order. I don’t worship at the alter of Tiger so no reason to go out of my way to make him first.

When I worked in the golf biz, Chipper Jones came and hit range balls at my course one day. I've seen Kordell Stewart at PGA superstore a couple of times. While in St. Simons playing golf with my buddies, Davis Love III was eating lunch in the bar and grille when we made the turn and were grabbing some beers. My buddy yelled "DL3!" haha he was drunk. I think that's it, but could be forgetting someone.

No one ever famous during the round. Pre-round one time at a club in Dallas, Lanny Watkins was having breakfast at the table next to us.

Another time at my Uncles club in central Texas, after the round George Strait walked in and the shot the bull for a while.

Michael Jordan played in the club championship at a course I used to play regularly outside Chicago. I've run into Mike Modano (Dallas Starts), Tony Romo (Cowboys) and Todd Hamilton (PGA) at a course I used to belong to here in the Dallas area.

Preston Trail?

I see Garrett at Roger Dunns in Santa Ana all the time .

yeah he also plays Mile Square occasionally. He doesn’t have the superstar attitude at all. Was my 2nd favorite halo behind Salmon back in the day.

Going off as a single at Dubsdread in Orlando a few years ago, got paired with Robby Krieger, who was in town for a show. Good player, cool guy, rock legend. Gave him a ride back to his hotel after the round.

Played Winged Foot a few times, Rick Pitino was there each time, around the clubhouse, in the locker room.

Saw Tiger at UF golf course in the early 90's, having a burger in the clubhouse, apparently post round, saw Emmitt Smith out there a few times, along with many lesser known Gator players.
