Wedge shafts -- lighter, heavier, stiffer, softer?

Recommended Posts

Thinking about switching out my wedge shafts, and I seem to have read everything under the sun in terms of how wedge shafts should fit in with your iron shafts. Currently leaning towards the same shaft (XP115), but R instead of S300.

Do your wedge shafts match your irons? Or are they lighter or heavier? Stiffer or softer?

I’m in the same boat, always played stock. Fitters at PGATSS suggested same exact shaft as irons if you can get them.

I have been tinkering with the same thing and the last two years probably bough a dozen wedges and shafts. I really like the Nippon WV 115 Wedges but they replaced them with the Modus Pro Wedge shafts and I tried the 115 version and didn't feel the same love. My current set up is my Gap wedge matches my Iron shafts Modus3 Tour 120s and my 54 & 58 are Modus3 125 Wedge @ 133 grams

My Irons are progressive swing weights from D2 in my 4 Iron to D4 in my Pitching wedge and D5 - D6 In Gap wedge , SW & LW

I had my wedges switched from the wedge flex to KBS Tour (same as irons) and love it. 100% better (for me).

But then I have a buddy that played college ball that kills me every time we play and he loves wedge flex shafts in his wedges... So who knows. Just play what feels best to you. There's no right or wrong answer.

Pros and high level amateurs generally have at least the same or heavier weight shaft, and the same or slightly softer flex shaft in their wedges.

Super common example on tour is X100 in irons, S400 in wedges. Same weight, softer flex.

Check any WITB that gets posted. This set up is EXTREMELY common. There are many variations on it depending on shaft brand.

I've experimented a good bit. Even graphite at some point (which was nice for digging shots), with softer flex.

Kinda reached the conclusion that it doesn't much matter, and you'll get used to whatever you choose.

Funny how the closer you get to scoring clubs, the more the head matters (and the shaft doesn't?), whereas in the big clubs the shaft is arguably more important than the head.

I play crazy light graphite iron shafts, but my 56 (the only non-matched club) is steel and heavier. And it's great bc of the head.

Noticed a lot of guys on tour have started putting KBS tour 120’s in their wedges despite playing X100’s or 130 gram shafts in their irons. I imagine they still end up with a heavier swing weight in their wedges than irons despite the lighter shaft weight. DJ is a good example of this.

It is very much a feel thing and question of which clubs you take full swings with and which you do not. I like to keep the full swing clubs the same or similar to my irons for the sake of consistency and I like to experiment with the less than full swing touch clubs. Normally this means my pitching and gap wedges are the same or similar to the irons and the Sand/Lob get something different. That all ends up being personal preference though, and the only real general rule that is good to follow is that unless you're doing your own custom weighting adjustments, its good to go heavier in the wedges from an overall feel standpoint. All things being equal that helps maintain something close to an MOI progression so your wedges don't start feeling light compared to your irons. If you are doing your own weighting though then you can really use whatever weight you want within reason.

Do your wedge shafts match your irons? Or are they lighter or heavier? Stiffer or softer?

A few general guidelines

Use ascending weight for the bag as a whole, so wedges is UP in weight vs irons

Use flex progression all the way to the shortest club played to full swing.(often the GW)

Go softer for wedges only used for partial swings.

My own set up for the moment is both plus on weight and flex, but i do take some full shots with my LW since i only have 2 wedges on top of my PW, but they are both made using the #8 iron spinner trick, so there is no lack of feel even if they actually is stronger than my PW shaft

So, before we know where to go, we have to ask our-self, How do i play this wedge? how do i want it to feel on weight, balance and flex?

I'm playing Recoil F5s now at 110, went with the same shaft at 125 in my SW and LW. I actually like the Recoil F5 125 a lot in my wedges, soft feel but still sort of stout in flex. I think I might have done better with the whole set at 125....

I play PX 5.5 in my irons and happened upon some PX 6.5 shafts in some SM4s I got a while back... I believe they are soft stepped as they do not feel as rigid as they should, but still have the weight. I will be honest though, I don't even know exactly what 6.5 they are but they work for me... I like that I can flight them up or down, and they make my dispersion much tighter than the Vokey stock shafts I had before.

I play C-Taper X all the way to my PW and an S+ in the rest of the wedges, so they're a little bit lighter in the shaft. But I play the same length from 9-iron down, so my wedges feel heavy. And boy, has it ever made a difference to consistency of strike. On partial shots and even chipping/pitching. The single length in the wedges is what I credit most with curing my chipping yips.
