Tiger Woods WITB: 2018 Wells Fargo (New TW-PHASE1 irons)

Recommended Posts

They are quite different than the VR pro irons. Different sole grind, more thin material above the crown at the Toe.

Similar, Not the same.

At a glance you would be hard pressed to distinguish the difference. I guess you took it literal when I said identical. Very similar to the common man. I'll make sure to check the grinds, head weight, toe shape, hosel length, grooves configuration, number of grooves, type of grooves, type of material, heel and toe grind, camber, bounce, loft, finish and placement of muscle before I say identical, so sorry!

Wasn’t my intended reason and I agree, they are very very similar.

I’m an a** on occasion with details.

I gotcha! Sometimes details are overrated in general conversation, but I understand the need for specifics at times!

Nice irons, I liked them when Mizuno introduced them last year.

Interesting he said part of the timing problem was Taylormade was using a metal he doesn't prefer and a groove configuration that he doesn't like.

I noticed that, but what are the different metals? I assume that these are carbon steel, 1025? I would think that Taylor Made would use that metal on all of their blades. Can't imagine that TM uses 8620 on blades. Does anyone know? Frankly, I think the best metal for irons is 304 stainless- but I can't imagine Tiger playing stainless blades.

304 SS forged irons sound expensive. Isn't something like that mainly reserved for putters where they can mill it?

MacGregor '99-2000 MT were 304 stainless, and those were cast. Like an idiot, I got rid of mine. But those were the softest feeling irons I've ever hit. I don't know whether the shaft and grip contributed to the feel, but I thought they were softer than the PCBs, which were Miura forged.

Stunning photos

I know tiger has always preferred a slightly longer blade length heel to toe with his irons.

Good job too, wouldn’t want him to start grabbing my irons out of bag and hitting them.

Not at this time.

Putters are available for order.

Wedges allegedly have a >200 person wait list at the moment and they are not accepting orders from the public. They have announced a goal of opening up sales more widely towards the end of their year, but they will need to ramp up production significantly to meet that

I'm pretty sure TM has said that the Rose and Rory Protos that they make are fully milled.

The original Rors and Rose protos were milled, but TaylorMade produced forgings for them later on as they ramped for the P-730 release. I can't recall which irons they're currently using, but I thought both of them had switched to the forged protos.

I wonder what guys like Cameron Tringale think where it looks like they grabbed three P790's, then bagged some P730's down to the Milled Grind wedge and then lead TW by a couple of shots after 3 days. Would that be extra motivation?

Anyway, I think the TW irons are drop dead good looking. Only the future will tell if all the work by him, and more so TM pay off with results. It will be fun to watch!!

Why would that be motivatiOn? IM sure if tringale wins 14 majors he can have custom made set of blades too. Or.... he could call artisan and have some made now ... lol.

Meaning not the Phase 1 irons. A future Tiger proto that will be finalized at a later date and subsequently released to the market.

Who knows how much longer Tiger has to play. Maybe 5 or so years. Tiger has been with TaylorMade 1.5 years and all they can market off of Tiger is a driver. Irons don’t even look to be close. I’m sure they are getting a sales bump, but they have to be a little disappointed.

Not really...they should be glad they got him in the first place. NO ONE expected him to go to the Dark Side. When Nike announced Hard Goods was closing it's doors...I bet there was a lot of Wooing going on. I was thinking he'd go Mizuno (played MP-14) or Bridgestone (since he played their ball for the last 5+ years.

But the "Force" wasn't strong enough.
