Is golf your most expensive hobby?

Shooting was up there last year and I spent much more on that as a hobby.

 

This year i've spent little to no money on shooting as I have all guns and ammunition I desire.

 

Golf so far this year I'm probably about £12k spent to pay for:

 

3 x Memberships at different clubs

TS3 Driver and 3 Wood + Cobra 3 Wood

New Electric Trolley

Flightscope XI+ Launch Monitor

4 Dozen Pro V1

4 Dozen AVX

Clothing

 

No other hobby comes close for me really, will be buying new irons and wedges this year too and think i may finally buy a Napa before they become unjustifiable for me. The flight scope will get an upgrade to the Tour also which is a further £4k for that alone.

It is by far my most expensive hobby. Not so much because of the equipment either. Yes, that stuff is expensive but I take golf vacations, I play in 2 tournament leagues, I pay GHIN dues thru 3 different organizations, and I belong to a private club.

Expensive...yes, but I have yet to see a hearse pulling a Uhaul...it is only money and you can't take it with you when you die.

Yes, golf is my most expensive hobby. My only other hobby is sitting in a recliner watching TV.

My kids hockey blows golf out of the water. I refuse to add this years tab up. On top of the scheduled season and tournaments his team won States and advanced to Nationals. Fly MD to CA for 6 days. Ouch. It hurt but worth every penny.

Hockey and my music hobby are 1 & 2. Even playing 3 times a week golf is still third. It probably helps that I rarely buy golf clubs.

Yes, I don't snowboard much anymore.

I also buy a lot of golf stuff that I don't need, so that doesn't help.

Don't snowboard anymore. Only surf trips a few times a year. MTB is paid for. Road bike is paid for. Harley is paid for.

Golf 2 times a week and range once at least. Tourney fees, etc.

And then there's the gear, of course.

New irons every year, two sets so far this year. Just bought an F9 5-6 fw wood, and probably add the 7-8 if i like it a lot. New bag and putter. Yep, it is expensive. I hope to slow down sometime, but who knows? Next will be lessons or a shoulder rehab.

I do alot of 3 gun. Between the guns, glass, ammo, travel and training it is not close

I'd say it's a tossup between golf and photography for me. Lucky for me I stopped playing hockey for golf so that was a little bit of a savings haha

The Bronco was super expensive to get to this point, but now it is in good shape. My “range membership” gets me free golf after 6pm so neither are very expensive any more ?

Never thought if it this way, but not sure. Carbon mountain bikes (that I've owned) run anywhere from $5-9K and I've owned roughly 6-8 in the last 5 years. Don't wanna do the math...haha.

Yeah, ever since I called it quits as a gigging musician, I sold the bulk of my gear I simply didn't need anymore (kept my favorite stuff, of course) and pretty much put my focus totally into golf.

 

Not sure which is more expensive, really. I mean, my guitar rig alone would probably pay for my whole bag about 5 or 6 times.

Since taking up golf 25 years ago, I have neither time nor money to afford any other real hobbies.

 

I do enjoy an occasional evening of (very) amateurish music making, either by myself or at family gatherings. And a piano is far more expensive than any golf clubs. But mine is a family instrument so I didn't have to buy one. Other than getting it tuned once a year, music comes basically for free. Which is nice.

Bass fishing is probably my most expensive hobby since I have a boat which we all know stands for Break Out Another Thousand. Just on one rod and reel setup, I've spent a tad over a $1000 for, which is nearly a new set of irons. Never really looked at it that way until this post. And thats just one set up. I have around 15 rod and reel setups and they average $300 per. Then you factor in buying the tackle like hooks, weights, line and baits. Gas to tow the boat, then gas for the boat, launch and parking fee. It all adds up. It all adds up.

Amazing the expensive hobbies some have...... Yes racing boats & cars I get, but some of the others too surprise me.

 

Pacifist here, so no worry about guns, but yes I've heard about the cost of fishing & surprised too how much some spend on bikes (and replacing them so often).

 

Most surprising though is how cheap golfing can be in some parts of the US. As said here in Canada in a major city if one has a membership the cost is about $10,000+ when you add all the costs together. Not sure how much more one has to spend......

There's another thread asking if you could go back in time would you tell yourself not to take up golf.

 

Combining that with this topic reminds me that if I lived in any number of places in USA (or Canada) then my brilliant idea, in my early 30's, to give golf a try would have been a very short-lived experiment. If I hadn't been able to play weekends and after work at public courses for $20 or $30 any time I liked, it's hard to imagine sticking with it long enough to realize how much I enjoy the game. And if I lived somewhere that the entry cost of private golf approaches the price of a new car, I'd certainly never have been able to even give that option a moment's thought.

Same here. I'm a Captain at a top 3 US airline and I'm not even close. Thank goodness for Cleveland and St Louis $25 premium course golf.
