Interesting development - $3000 pay to caddy from a $1.3 million winners check? (MOD EDIT - NO POLIT

Recommended Posts

This is such a ridiculous thread and anyone worried about what Kuch paid his caddy should find other things to worry about. It's similar to classic experiment where, given the choice of getting one piece of candy and a sibling getting 2 pieces of candy or neither getting any candy, kids will always choose that neither gets candy. This caddy, unexpectedly, made more money in a week than he probably makes in a month.

Could Kuch have gone over the top and dropped $100K on him? Sure, it would have been a nice gesture. Would the caddy's life have been better off? Maybe, or he could have fallen into the classic trap lotto winners fall into where people start coming out of the woodwork begging for money, making his life miserable.

Should we berate these guys every time they leave a $100 tip for dinner rather than a $1,000 tip, because they can afford it?

Yeah, Kuch really did Ortiz a solid by not giving him a more fair tip. Probably the reason Kuchar stiffs everyone else he comes across on Tour too.

Depends on the tab for that dinner. If he took a bunch of people to an expensive place and the tab was $5k and he tipped $100, then damn right he should be berated for that.

And I love the speculation that he was actually doing the caddy a favour by stiffing him. Maybe the Tour and Kuch's sponsors will do Matt a favour. Like paying him $50k instead of the $1.15 million for winning the Sony. I'm sure he'd thank them for that.....

Any facts in here yet?

Yes. Gillis is a 100% certified busy-body, look-at-me, Dbag.

That's really the only thing to be wholly established here.

That's more an opinion than a fact.

Don't see anything else in Gillis' history that supports that. So maybe, this one-time behaviour has a little more to it than you think.

Here's one fact: Gillis is doing this under his real name, unlike most posters here (myself included).

"You think the $5,000 was fine (and it seems obvious it was not much more then that) and that the $2,000 tip was above and beyond. Others think he stiffed the caddy & has not stepped up (to date) when outed. "

I don't think any amount is "fine", it's not up to me to decide. What I do think is that the folks saying this Tucan fella guided Kuchar to a win are full of mierda. Kuchar likely won despite having a local caddie when all of the other players had their tour caddies with them. He may have won by 10 with his regular guy and hated looking at this guy's face for the week but kept him around out of courtesy. Tossed him $5,000, told him to wipe down in the sink and take a cab home, he was done with him.

He may have won by 10 with his regular guy. That's possible, but not all that likely given he hadn't won with his regular guy in 4 years.

I was thinking more China in the 60's.

I am not very familiar with Chinese history in general or recent Chinese history specifically. Robespierre's story is so rich in irony and so very, very applicable today.

This is a forum where people give opinions & share thoughts.

Pro golfers are public figures and if they care as to the $'s made off the course are very careful and cultivate it...... Then there's Patrick Reid :taunt: .

Kuch regardless has botched it with his cavalier response when confronted.

Anyone who doesn't see that has their head in the sand.

What shocks me is the # here shooting the messenger and defending Kuch.

that's some cockamamie BS. There was no simple "messenger" anywhere in this story or this thread.

Really? Calling Gillis "a 100% certified busy-body, look-at-me, Dbag" isn't shooting the messenger?

That was only a handful of posts ago, there's plenty more.

I realize there are very few actual facts that support either side of the story. I stopped using the term "alleged" WRT Kuch's actions for brevity; consider it implied. I'm not sure I've seen the same thing extended towards Gillis.

What's this Willis?

Isn't it Gillis? Or did a mystery person on twitter named Tom Willis corroborate? I've missed the last day or so of this.

Is this gonna be like the Dahmen thread where all the guys supporting him turned out to be either his buddies, or him tweeting with a fake mustache?

I like the irony of saying he uses his real name, and then getting it wrong. Gak. :blush2:

Absolutely. He wasn't a "messenger" in any way, shape, or form. A messenger isn't someone that goes out of their way to make a private business transaction between two consenting adults a public affair via twitter. No way in hell did el toucan say to this schlep "Hey, can you go on twitter, since you are so popular are all, and tell the world how much Kuch paid me"

Give me a break. He was meddling and looking for attention, plain and simple. For all we know he's ended this guy's chances of ever hauling a pros bag again.

Well, there is the fact that a Tour Pro called out another Tour Pro and did it under his real name (whatever that is, I've never heard of Gillis OR Willis until now....).

There's also the fact that the same guy called out another Tour Pro for an actual Dbag move, and the guy he called out ended up making things right.

Those are about it. There may be others. Still.....

Not sure what all this attention actually gains Gillis with his "meddling and looking for attention". Seems to me he's only done it once before, and there were reasons other than attention for doing it that time. As there are (alleged to be) this time.

Whatever.....

No what is interesting is that an athlete who earns $3,000,000-$5,000,000/yr (including endorsements, fees.......) paid the caddy what would have been a fair amount $3,000 for the week but knowing full well what the standard rate is and then winning the tournament, did not pay him anything close to that (and no one expected him to pay 10%), and when confronted had what is no more then a lame a** response.

Another interesting aside. Looking at his career he hadn't been to Hawaii since 2016, the the prior two years didn't play until February, so the Mayakoba win resulted in him playing both the TOC & Sony..... More reason to thank El Tucan.

Yep he stiffed him......

Give us a fecking break.

Morning folks. How is everyone?

I've been up for over7hours.

I’d been awake for a couple hours already but I jumped in the car and drove for 2.5 hours before I hopped back in the thread-saddle.

Throwing this out there - been meaning to for several pages...

I don’t even like Kuchar. I’ve never rooted for him. His swing is ugly and his putting stroke I don’t care for either. He’d have to give me at least 10 strokes to even start to make it interesting if we played - even then I highly doubt I could take him.

Fix your swing, Matt. I’ve seen peasants with a prettier swing!

Carry on and good day to all.

Why does he owe any more than a cavalier response when it’s to a question that has no business being asked? Quite frankly he said more than he needed to, a simple “it’s none of your damn business” would have been the most appropriate answer.

Pro golf is a entertainment industry, nothing more , nothing less. If you're going to pick apart every cheap millionaire entertainer that is walking around you better get busy. The list is very long. The dude wasn't a tour caddy and deserved no more than whatever he agreed upon before he signed on. Shouldn't have a thing to do with where Kuchar finished. Of course maybe the guy would have given his money back if he missed the cut.

Was hittin balls at the chelsea piers. Didnt do to bad considering its 30* and I havent hit a ball in couple months. Got to demo some cool irons.

Then, I forgot my driver in the stall, I left, jumped in a cab, go a couple blocks and I see this kid running next to the cab yelling, "Sir! You forgot your driver!"

I grabbed it from him as the cab was still moving and threw some change at him for his trouble.

Thats my business and I expect full support from the pro Koocher crowd ; )
