TaylorMade M5 cracking already ???

Here comes the Boom

Recommended Posts

Would never happen with a SLDR-C.

Β

Never say never, but it's a sure lot less likely to happen with a TM Titanium Driver verses one with a composite crown and sole!...

Bobcat, is the C still in the bag? If not, what beat it out?

Β

Yes, The (2015) SLDR-C Driver is still in my bag... No plans to change!.... :beach:

Can't imagine another driver providing better ''average driving distance' or a 'higher percentage of fairways hit' than the SLDR-C does, and that's the way I measure success with any driver. I have a huge amount of confidence in it, and score best when using it;, so no, it's not going anywhere!... :no2:

Β

I also like the fact that this 'Classic' TM Driver is Titanium! I have zero interest in owning a driver made partially of a composite, or carbon fiber.. :fie:

Β

(My 'backup driver' is a Tour-issue 12* SLDR 430 which is excellent, and yet the SLDR-C is better!.

Β

For whatever reason, the particular head and shaft combo shown below just works extremely well for me!.... (cool)

Β

The 9.5* Loft provides the perfect trajectory for me

45.5" Miyazaki Kusala Black 61 (Stiff) , tipped 1/2"

The M3 is known to have this problem with the carbon on the bottom, not surprising if the m5 has similar issues.

Β

Huh? I never saw (pics or in person) an M3 with damage to the sole.

Β

Here's ONE of my heads that cracked.

I wonder if TM will actually do anything at all. Lesson learned, don’t buy a driver with a carbon fiber sole.

That’s a costly lesson...

Β

And the lesson should be, don’t DESIGN and BUILD a driver with a CF sole!

Yeah... I swore off TM after my third head cracked and got a TS3. I actually felt that I benefited from twistface though, so I recently picked up an M4 (metal sole) and am hoping for no issues going forward.

  • 2 weeks later...

I wonder why some, are having multiple heads cracking and others, (me for example) have had no problem at all.

Β

I'm not seeing it either. And honestly, Ive slammed mine down sole first into the ground after bad swings several times. No damage. None on any of my demos either, nor any of the heads in our tech rep's kit. I look every time we host an event (2 so far, with a 3rd planned for May).

My understanding is that it is from tee contact, not club slamming.

I know what it's from. I've discussed it several times with TaylorMade people. Just adding that I'm not seeing it even in the overhanging lip of the weight track, when I've basically slammed it into the ground pretty much directly on that part. Seems like that area is pretty strong, on mine at least.

my friend Kevin has an M5...has played a few rounds with it, not-so-slammed it a time or two and it still looks brand new. i told him what's been popping up with these drivers and he said he'd keep and eye out but wasn't going to be worried too much.

I get that Chris. My point was that is two totally different types of impact. The tee is hitting the edge or the thin area.

Looks like the world won’t end after all... my M5 tour doesn’t have the flap of doom

Β

Β

Β

it almost seems like they sawed it off vs. redoing the design on the bottom. if you look at where the orange lines meets the slide track, you can see the old design but the flap is cut off so nothing is flapping over. Still have no clue why they didn't go with the no flap in the first place.

that pic of the m5 tour is INTERESTING!!! if you look at TM website , the m5 tour does have the flap!!! so it looks like tm is definitely changing their design of the m5!! I wonder when the m5 460's will start to be produced this way?? looking forward to getting this v2!!

when all is said and done,, many of you claiming the cracking is only caused by slamming, or abuse,I can tell you all, I don't do that, yet mine is slowly showing more and more wear right in that flap area. so to all that say it isn't happening to you,and if it is, it's because of abuse, I guarantee, it will soon enough.

also, to the naysayers, why did tm change the sole design of the m5 tour?

Geez cutting off the excess and calling it fixed, cough Triton cough cough lol. Why was it though that Triton was deemed unconforming because the excess protrusion of the sole plate created a "cavity", but all these drivers with weight tracks essentially have "cavities" in the heads no? Genuine question not trying to be a dick.... was it due to the location of the cavity being on the back of the club versus the bottom?

I believe the Triton was only non-conforming with the heavy weight in the toe side and that was due to having too high of CT with the carbon sole plate, from what I remember.

I believe the Triton was only non-conforming with the heavy weight in the toe side and that was due to having too high of CT with the carbon sole plate, from what I remember.

There were two issues -- one was the size of the adjustable sole plate, and the other was the the CT was too high in a setting that basically no one would ever use because it would make the swingweight around E-4 (a pair of 6g weights, a 12g weight, and the heavier sole plate, which I believe was the titanium one).

I said the same thing in the m5 thread. It still needs the metal barrier on the toe side to protect the exposed carbon from 110 mph tee contact.
