Is Francesco Molinari done?

Lennon Mccartney

Recommended Posts

His career-long strength has been consistent, accurate ball striking. One bad swing on 12 and one unfortunate pine cone on 15 are not going to make him lose faith in a skill that he has mastered. Now if his putting (which had been a weakness he has relatively recently improved markedly) had failed him, I could see him wondering in the back of his head whether it will fail him again. He doesn't seem like the type to perseverate over it to the point that he builds it up in his mind to be much more than it is and loses his competitive mental edge.

Can’t be serious.

He'll be fine. Those two shots on 12 and 15 wasn't a bad swing but more of mental mistakes. He said he didn't hit his tee shot on 12 hard enough. On 15, the ball on his 3rd shot rolled up the face, went higher than he had expected and hit a branch or a pine cone.

He will bounce back, he's too good of a golfer to let it get him down.

What are the normal odds that a 36yr old ranked 7th in the world who is a 1-time major winner would win a second? Probably what, less than 5%?

So there's a good chance he wouldn't win another major anyway. But i'm sure he has many more years as a top golfer.

My answer is absolutely no. I don’t think he will win a major every year but I think in the next five years he will win 1 or 2 more. Doesn’t sound amazing but I think it is. He’s a solid player who doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and has addressed a weak part of his game and made it a strength. I also like him because he is polite and seems humble. Very enjoyable to me.

I guess he was going to be GOAT after he beat Tiger for his Major, and now he is done? OK now, just retire to Ryder Cup fun! Rest those tired eyes. One thing though, it does look like Molinari doesn't get enough sleep. Maybe that's affecting him? Sleep deprivation?

To be even more fairier, Spieth won the Open after that. It’s not like that was the absolute end for him.

It is possible, Molinari hasn't been extremely successful for very long, 1-2 seasons ago it began and until enough time passes where he shows real longevity towards the top, then we'll know if he's actually *that* good. The same people calling him Mr Iceman, and things of that sort, are thinking too short term of his successes so far....

I expect a letdown. Current form is relatively meaningless compared to overall ability level. That's why Tiger could never be counted out despite lousy current form, and it's the reason you can't get carried away with a late bloomer like Molinari no matter what his current form indicates. Guys like that very seldom can have a long sustained run of excellence.

But the good news for Moliari is that this happened in 2019 instead of let's say 2020. If he had gone 18+ months playing at inflated level in the majors and then had a setback like this, I'd be certain of a decline. This may have been early enough to allow the peak to continue for a while.

> As a great fan of Italian golf, I worry that Francesco will now fall down the same path so many have after a brutal collapse/choke against Tiger...The water balls on 12 and 15 remind me of Greg Norman in 96...it is truly difficult to ever bounce back in a major again after this.. i could see him doing well in regular tour stops like Wentworth or exhibition/charity events like the Ryder cup....but I feel as though Francesco's intimidation factor is now gone and the "francesco effect" is no longer alive...i only bring this up because there are not many great Italian golfers to root for ...As an Italian-American i was rooting for Francesco to pull it out on Sunday...Faldo's career was never the same after Tiger showed him what the future of golf would look like in 97' and I fear Francesco will go down the same path...#TDO

Yup he's done.

I heard he's already started endorsing the GX-7 and in negotiations with Square Strike.

His wins before last May at the BMW Championship were few and most years he didn't win anything. He had 4 wins on the ET from 2005- late May 2018. He has had a great run since. Nobody know how long it will last.
