Dude has been inside the top 10 and currently top 15...what isn’t top tier about that?

9, averaging 1 win yearly on his full time seasons. If being ranked in the top 20 of all professional golfers in the world is not 'top tier' then a rational person must question how you are defining it.

Hell, since he made it to the PGA tour full time he has never been ranked over 40.

I suppose I am influenced by what his coach, Butch Harmon, said constantly about him when he commentated on sky sports golf coverage, about his approach undermining his potential. nice guy, the mullet haircuts, the comedy facial hair. I can name the golfers who don't do that, and they are far more likely, and prolific, winners than Rick. I like him. I have no money on him to win at Portrush.

Butch needs to go back to Butch.

He was much better when Butch coached him[self]

So you are faulting him for doing things related to charities? As to his approach I’m assuming you are referring to what butch told him about bring a kardashian it a golfer...he’s changed that approach already.

Dude is too nice for one thing...which will benefit him more in life than not. He also makes probably 3x5 million every year ...for that page 1 comment. I'm not going to say winning is not a priority but obviously playing well w/o the W suits him. As good of a putter as he is amazing he does not win more for sure.

He has five top 10s this season including a win and a t9 at the Masters. Pretty sure 75% of the tour would kill for his season to date.

And he already has more wins with the new ball than he had with the old ball last year. He's ranked right around where you expect him and has already won above his average number of tournaments.

He's having a good year compared to his career averages.

is he in the same tier as Brooks, Rory or even Tiger? definately not, then he is not top tier......the last 5 years? did he have 5 years as good as Dustin, Brooks, Spieth, Rory, Thomas, Day, Rose, Tiger, Bubba etc....He is definately not top tier. LOL

Tiger has 2 wins in the last 5 years...despite him being the goat he isn’t top tier in the last 5 years if Rickie isn’t.

Golf is a fleeting game. It's hard to stay at the top consistently. A down year or two should be expected. Having said that, he's not had a bad year so far.

This trend is a little strange......Smylie pretty much gone, Jordan struggling, Rickie starting to slide a little......if I were Justin T I'd get some new friends.

Its my opinion that the main reason for the existence of this thread and the idea that Rickie is an underachiever is linked completely to the amount of saturation we receive on the guy. He happens to be incredibly marketable, that doesn't and shouldn't slight his accomplishments up to this point. He's doing just fine. Its just that the last golfer so thoroughly shoved into our lives via advertising happened to be Tiger Woods. Not many can or will ever measure up to his accomplishments. Perhaps subconsciously our expectations are a little inflated.

The competition is fierce out on tour and more young kids coming with hunger so it does not mean Rick (not calling him Rickie)is a sub par tour player! Rory stated it clearly it’s a fine line at this level.

I'm not a Rickie guy but how is he sliding? He's won a tournament and he's the #14 player in the world. He's got 5 wins in over 10 years on tour, even if you include his two quality Euro wins he's still well under a win per season. He's out performing his career averages and is ranked highly.

what you failed to mention is Tiger was ranked over 650 in the world career over, will never win again. And now he is ranked 5th with a 15th major.

And as he reaches 40 events in a 2 year period that ranking will drop some.

There is no technical reason why he doesn't win more. Fowler is a very good links player, plays well at target golf. Pretty much does everything well and putts really well.

But it often feels like he's only ever among the best in any given week and doesn't have the extra gear you need to win lots of tournaments. McIlroy may be flaky and not fancy it sometimes, but when he does he can separate himself from the field. Fowler has to have everything working at its best to win.
